Digital Foundry vs Metro Redux

Getting ready to play through 2033 again on PC (since my GPU upgrade).

Is Redux a push to look more like the PC version, or is it like Tomb Raider with actual changes to some things (like character models or environment)?

Both kinda.

Uses new metro LL engine, replaces some of the more janky graphical elements in the first game (some character models etc...). Upreses certain things, adds more detail to environemnts, but also changes core gameplay to be more like metro LL.

Who knows how much better the PC version will look. It will definitely have more tesselation and environmental effects. That is certain.

One thing I'm wondering here. Will this game be avaiable for digital purchase like a "pack" with both Metro 2033 and Last Light for 60 dollars, or will they be sold separated by 60 dollars each?

Freeing up the kinect allocation only brings it back to the original gap. I guess MS talking points have made people think it's gonna close the gap

Good point. Even I'll admit that the way it always gets worded by Microsoft, it sounded like it was getting a boost, but that's contrary to the original gap between the actual core hardware that got people mentioning the weakness in the first place.

They are sold separately for $25 each or together for $50.

OH gotcha..... I will assume that these games are the pinnacle of game design and everything else is unplayable shit

He was trying to come up with games that don't drop below 60 -- not that games with some drops are unplayable. But you know that already.

It's £30/$50 for both together.

Edit: The disc is £30, not sure about digital.

I'm glad they're both 50% on PC if you own the originals. I like it when they appreciate your custom the first time around. I can't believe there are some people on the Stream forums who feel that isn't cheap enough and they're being ripped off.

Big improvements over the original PC versions on both console and PC.
Watch the recent console video at Gamersyde.

Are you kidding me or simply unable to see fluctuations in the framerate? Remember what we're discussing: Whether The Last of US dips once or many times through the campaign.

To adress StrongBlackVine's claim that it doesn't dip more than once according to DF, watch the videos from DF:

Even in those short videos it dips many times, I stopped counting at 20, and it can easily do so even if it spends 99% of the time at a constant 60fps. But just for kicks I've uploaded three pictures that are all near the beginning of a section with no enemies at all, where you can test for yourselves. It goes without saying that they could be seen as SPOILERS to some, so don't click them unless you've played through the game:

Stand in the designated spots, turn on the flashlight and start rotating your character slowly. It's very easy to see as soon as it deviates from 60. Of course there's plenty of other places where the framerate slows down, even in the same scenes, I just picked some where it cannot be missed..

Why would anyone even turn the flashlight on in those scenes?

Yeah, yeah....just really not liking this 'if its not a solid 60 its inferior' mentality...only 30 fps games where I have a noticeably hard time controlling are FPSs

While you are at it, why don't you think of some other completely irrelevant stuff and put those words in my mouth as well?

If you read my comment properly you'll see it was a response to a comment that claimed no game holds 60FPS.

No tessellation at all on PS4/Xbox One ? Strange.
I hope that will be added in the final build because in Last Light tessellation adds an awful lot to the graphics.

Having played both games maxed out on PC I will still buy this because I want to support those guys. Furthermore if they (at least this is what the trailer claims at 1.48minutes) added even more bells and whistles my future Maxwell GPU will be warranted.

It didn't say none at all. Just less.

I wasn't referring to your post but DF claims the tessellation is near non existant on current-gen consoles.

Some of the high-end options found on PC don't make their way across to the Redux - if tessellation is utilised, it's to nowhere near the same degree as the PC version for example

See here :

It looks absolutely fantastic on PC. I wonder what preset will the current-gen consoles use, I'd say a mix of high/very high setting is likely.

Well you cant have everything and keep 1080p and 60fps.

I know that those consoles don't pack anywhere near high-end hardware but given the low-level APIs I was expecting something much closer to the PC version.

I will probably try the PS4 version and compare to the PC Redux. If they kept the high-end effects of the original releases plus the Redux enhancements this is going to look amazing on high-end PCs.

The fact that they got to 60fps is also very good news for mid-range PCs owners, they must have optimized their code further and this will benefit the PC version as well.
