Digital Foundry's Alex on Project Eve's main female character: "old (2000's) and not flattering to a Modern Audience...in comparison to...Forespoken"

"I don't like this, it shouldn't exists" (A.K.A. censor this shit)

Creativity freedom is dead and some here are actually applauding it.

What happened to "Don't like it? Don't buy it"? I'm not a fan of COD, but I'm not wishing for it to die, there are plenty of different games for everyone.
Just stick with the "girl looks like a dude" games and be happy.

This is what I want to know. What is the logic and reasoning behind these arguments of:

"It's not for a 'Modern Audience'"

As you noted, has this guy scene what the Mobile/Gacha scene is all about? How much percentage of gaming audience is that? Especially the amount of money it rakes in. Here's a very recent design from the super popular Genshin Impact:

Speaking about Genshin Impact.

This is its latest hero.

She outsold all other heroes released before her.

And no, she isn't THAT strong to justify such high sales.

Design matters and good design sells.

I do find it a bit weird that the guy can't say he doesn't like the design. I mean....it doesn't really matter.

He's not asking for it to be cancelled is he?

Shut the fuck up kids. He has the right to have an opinion and he is not attacking, harming, or trying to manipulating anyone.

Get out and get some air, get a life, and let people be as right or wrong as they want.
Man, you just have bad takes in almost every thread.

So he gets to shit on the game instead of letting it be. But we can't discuss his opinion? Get off your pedestal. All you do is run defense nonstop.

Apparently looking Korean "isn't flattering to a modern audience".

Alex Battaglia was and continues to be a fucking clown.
Exactly. The imperialist / ethnocentric mindset is off the charts. Virtually one of the very first major Korean games to ever grace consoles. And they lecture them about being dated according to western tastes.

Have you guys ever seen what kind of people are idolized in Korea?

The fake plastic models on social media are doing more harm to young women than some fucking video game character.

Every naturally gorgeous young women online is getting lip injections, fake shitty looking asses, botox injections they don't need and all of it before they even turn 20.

The Kim Kardashans of the world, the Cardi Bs etc. influence young girls more than any fictional character will ever do.

"But real women have the right to sexualize themselves and be role models for easy to influence girls." Weh weh weh.

Creators have the right to create whatever character they want. Don't like it, don't play the games, watch movies or tv shows and so on. Stop trying to censor it.

What kind of answer is this. :goog_relieved:

Okay let's assume for a moment that I'm completely fucking dumb. Could you care to explain to me how having a sexy character in a videogame is demeaning to women in any way, when sexy women exist and aren't a bad thing?

It's because your line of reasoning is so fucking pathetic that it's kind of hard to know where to start. Like, I genuinely think you understanding what a non sequitur is would be a reasonable first step.

But, roughly speaking: context matters.

Female genitalia exists in real life. You wouldn't (presumably) defend a game from the charge of sexism that just had at regular intervals all its female characters expose their pussies and start frigging away apropos of of nothing, right? I mean, RIGHT?

You wouldn't say: "women irl have pussies and masturbate, therefore fine."

The basic question to ask is: is this blatant objectification? Is it reducing a female character to just a sex object? That is pretty much generally considered to be an example of sexism.

This, I 100% agree with.

Hahaha you trying to lecture me while defending the 'eye for an eye'.
"He shits our game then we must shit him too".

No wonder you think i have bad takes everywhere.

Is he the front man for a German homo erotica metal band?

I mean each to their own. I actually like Alex and he can do whatever he wants. Just interested in what inspired these photos.

As long as the gameplay is great and I don't get put off doing a combo by a face full of pu**y lips I'm sure I'll be OK.
Nah, those are just pics he posts on twitter or his instagram. Hes clearly not shy about showing off his body. No idea why he has different standards for women.

I didn't try, I did lecture you.

It's not eye for an eye, I'm saying we're just as allowed to talk about our opinions as he is. How is that obvious to everyone here but you?

You know... sex sells, models with thicc thighs and porcelain skin are there because savvy fat cat developers know that it'll get eaten up, not because they believe in giving gamers unabashedly sexy characters... it's about easy money

i dunno, i don't like feeling like i'm just a totally understood pawn of a calculating game developer somewhere, being lead around by my hardon.

alex, well, shit dude, ur pretty famous and everyone watches your videos, i think u knew what u were getting in to when u were trying to make the point... we all fuck up, better luck next time... halo infinite suffered from more than poor lighting

There are also those that argue it to be art. We're getting a little off topic here, but I guarantee you that it's not only straight men that the character design appeals to. I'd be surprised if there weren't at least 100 cosplayers working on that suit right this very minute. It's ok to like designs like the female lead from this game without wracking yourself with guilt about it.

Who's guilty? I thought the trailer was funny because of its exaggerated heroine/direction. I'd be happy to play the game if it turns out to be good.

But I find people denying that it's sexist (or at the very least, objectification, if there's a genuine distinction between the two) to just be either unreasonable or full of shit.

You wouldn't say: "women irl have pussies and masturbate, therefore fine."
Why not? What I would do is not buying that game (sounds lame), and not going to the internet and try to tell people what's fine for them to like and what isn't.

The basic question to ask is: is this blatant objectification? Is it reducing a female character to just a sex object? That is pretty much generally considered to be an example of sexism.
It's a video game character that just happens to be obviously sexy. And I still don't see how that's a bad a thing, for as much as you like to exaggerate your posts.

Go outside, you'll find women with attires much more revealing that Eve's. Are you going to approach those women and tell them their are demeaning to their own gender because of the thigns they wear? Don't think so, because they can do with their bodies whatever the fuck their want, just in the same way a videogame character designer can do whataver the fuck he/she want's with it's creations.

Why these people always speak so broadly about the audience and shit like that? I mean, I don't like the design, she in the face looks like child, not the mention I am not exactly fan of big asses, etc.

But you know, that's just me...

I find this approach aka "I don't like something thus others are the same" little bit problematic, pun intended.

Doubt any of these people have even glanced at popular Korean media. They'd be shocked at how absurdly "Pretty" both the boys and the girls are.

The costume is pretty tacky and leans too heavily on sex appeal tbh, but I've definitely seen way worse. I probably wouldn't play this game around other people because of the constant over-the-top ass shots lol.

Combat and monster design look awesome though :messenger_ok:

Is he getting cancelled here?

He is criticizing the design and people are criticiziing his opinion on the design.

Uh oh. The Digital Foundry "lets analyze the way the wind blowing effects the grass particles" annoying nerds are like heroes around here. What will you all do now that they're showing such wokeness?

You are allowed to talk about him as much as I'm allowed to tell you need to get a life if you trash someone by expressing his opinion in no harmful way.

LOL ok I guess you're basically blind to sexism then. I mean, I can't really make a more absurd reduction than that, so fair play.

Well that's good. I honestly couldn't tell from the whole "shut the fuck up kids," followed up by "let people be as right or wrong as they want" which is kind of a meaningless statement unless you're trying to tell people to never criticize anything.

What harm are you even talking about here? You're pretty much the most aggressive poster in the thread. How do you know if any of us have lives? Is that harm to imply we don't? You're just coming off like a giant hypocrite.

I perfectly understand people who don't like sexy design in serious games, she would look utterly stupid in tlou2.

But look the rest of the fucking game boys, it's some bombastic scifi with monsters, there is nothing realistic or immersive in all of that, they can design her whatever they want.

He criticize the game with which I believe is a very lame/silly reason, and so I criticize him for it.

If someone says a thing you didn't agree you say you didn't agree. Whats wrong with that?

Also, lets not pretend he didn't look at the technical points of the game for some reason.

I love the character design of Project EVE and the artstyle will be one of the reasons for me to buy it.
But to be honest, Alex is just expressing his opinion here, namely that he doesn't like this design. That's perfectly legitimate. Besides, he says that after the character design, the game goes more in the direction of the 2000's era, which he's right about.
In my eyes, absolutely no reason to hold some sort of parade through the house for this, let alone a thread that aims to make negative mood mongering.
When did it become fashionable to be triggered so quickly? Let people talk and look at your own nose even if it means that different opinions coexist.

I personally separate the work from the artist unless it's some serious hitler stuff.

I can appreciate what they're trying to do with DF and how they're forthcoming their lack of awareness is some things due to not working as a dev and just a group of very technically enthusiastic gamers. It's fine to make mistakes here and there which is why we use different analysts like NXG and VGTech who themselves aren't exempt from mistakes as well.

What this does for me however is make me take his opinions outside of tech analysis with a little bit more grain of salt.

I'm actually more "triggered" by Alex projecting his own opinion unto a whole generation when he says "it's not flattering to a modern audience":. He can express his opinion all he wants and dislike whatever, and that's OK. But don't get up on your pedastal and generalize and pretend your personal opinion is in line with a whole generation, as if it validates your taste and preferences as "the right ones" and this game's style is offensive (the contrary of flattering) to everyone who is part of that "modern audience" whatever that means.

I thought the worst thing was his complaint about contrast with GT7 compared to the new Forza. Even the others were pointing out Forza had a free hand as it was based on a fictitious Mexico while GT7 tracks were based on real tracks and wanted to match them including colour scheme. That's the thing with simulation games, realism.

I don't see the big deal, most anime character designs are nuts. This caters to certain demographic and thats just business. 🤷‍♂️ Overall this isn't too over the top in the scheme of things.I usually have a beef about designs that have no context, or stupid context like (mgs quiet)

Personally, yeah I think in the context of the game she looks dumb. I get his comment on being embarrassed with his wife. Your wife walks in and you are playing a fetish sex wafiu character in a videogame. Should you be embarrassed? I don't know depends on your relationship. But I think its disingenuous for anyone saying they don't understand why shit like this looks embarrassing. I wouldn't be embarrassed by my wife. My daughter yeah.. that just doesn't feel right. Different for everyone.
