Digital Foundry's Alex on Project Eve's main female character: "old (2000's) and not flattering to a Modern Audience...in comparison to...Forespoken"

I don't know why people are getting upset at his views on this subject.

It's been pretty obvious from the get go that the boy is walking, talking weapons grade Wokery.

I love the work he does for DF but I doubt very much I'd want to be in the same room as him, to talk about anything other than said work for DF, without wanting to give him a good slap, in pretty short order.

I'm actually more "triggered" by Alex projecting his own opinion unto a whole generation when he says "it's not flattering to a modern audience":. He can express his opinion all he wants and dislike whatever, and that's OK. But don't get up on your pedastal and generalize and pretend your personal opinion is in line with a whole generation, as if it validates your taste and preferences as "the right ones" and this game's style is offensive (the contrary of flattering) to everyone who is part of that "modern audience" whatever that means.
Like I said TL;DR version: Fuck it - not worth getting angry about it.

American designers would never design a character like Bayonetta or Tifa. TRAINED MEN SHOULD HAVE BEER BELLIES AND TRAINED WOMEN SHOULDN'T HAVE BIG ASSES OR BOOBS. LOL ffs

EDIT: And for the sake on "inclusion" I'm still waiting for an Afghan women that is a hero in games

Personally i hope more Korean game devs decide to create PC/Console games. Having more variety is always welcome and Project Eve looks awesome. Character design might not be for everyone but for me it's perfect.

I'd like to think Alex would have chosen his words a bit more carefully, had this been a scripted video, since the whole modern-audiences bit come across as rather dismissive of anyone who'd prefer the Project Eve character (myself included) to that of the women in Forespoken. In general, this is the problem with turning the news media into personalities: every pundit will eventually make some casual comment that'll have portions of the audience telling them to get bent. None of this is helped in any regard by what has escalated into a culture war over what depictions people are and aren't allowed to enjoy.

I'm not sure how much it's actually truly his opinion rather than if he didn't say anything certain people would be up in arms over that too. I think they've gotten flak from similar stuff in the past when they weren't sufficiently woke. Dictator is still on Ree so he needs to kowtow if he's to remain in good graces there. I'll give him a break this time, but he should really start to figure out that place isn't for long and being associated with it is not wise.

It's not a falsehood to say these designs were more of a thing in the 00's, but there's still few of them coming from Asian devs. In the West this is absolutely verboten in the AAA sphere though, and as you can tell, many think Sony stepped over the invisible line just showcasing the game. The game is obviously selling itself like Nier and Bayonetta largely on it's sexy female lead quite shamelessly, and some people simply can't tolerate these games still exist or are shown in the limelight outside of some seedy adults only game site.

I think if you're embarrassed or ashamed of sexy ladies in games it tells more about you than it does others who can enjoy it for what it is without drawing massive conclusions about their opinion on women etc. Not every game is for everybody, and these days designs like these are obviously a rarity in AAA. If you can't tolerate it, it is oh so easy to play any of the other AAA titles with "interesting" women wearing jeans and plaid on them where the in game model isn't remotely as good looking as the gorgeous actress it was modeled after for some reason. Not my idea of cool design, but some people are seemingly very much into replicating their depressing every day and all its issues in games.

Is there some happy medium between blatantly sexualized fap material for lonely nerds, and frumpy gen-z diversity poster child? Is it okay to hate both of those extremes?

But there is a trilogy about...
trailer miss GIF

How it works exactly?
Bayonetta's actually a cool character with a lot of personality though.

I do get the criticism that Project Eve's character just kind of seems like some generic sexy fuckdoll with not much else going. It's not simply a matter of "too sexy" as much as it is "not much else going for her."

Alex is a die hard gay that hate what make woman a woman. I'am gay and have no problem with this character.

Alex is also a die hard censor from far right. I'm not. I'm think anyone can be like they want, binary, non binary, ugly, beautiful. That's ok for me.

And if Alex is not gay, it's even worse. Who on earth does he think he is to say what woman should be? MF talibans do that!

As soon as the trailer started it focused on her ass, honestly this only appeals to pre-pubers, if the main focus is the waifu-anime whatever you have little confidence in your product.

To me it was an instant nope, As a grown man I can't stand that type of unnatural proportions and stereotypes... The gameplay didn't look any special neither...

Almost as bad as when someone complained about Aloy being too ugly. Some of them are in this thread, too.

People actually get upset over stuff like this. lol

Dude, Bayonetta is the same thing lol

She pratically show every part of her body, including some cool spell powers that completelly nudes her. Its clear as water the main point of her game is sexuality.

I bet he and people don't attack Bayonetta because Baynetta is simply too huge, he would be swiped in the floor instantly if he complains.

I like her design. The intent was a cool sexy design and they achieved that. Kudos to the character designer. Most men in the east and some in the west are past letting people shame them for what they like and what they want to create. Social media attempts to weaponize shaming to get people(men) to conform. As a secure man you should be headstrong and immune to it.

Bayonetta's sexuality is absolutely part of her character. But it is not the ONLY part of her character. She actually has a personality.

And how do you know this character doesn't have personality? Did this game launched already?
Also, are you saying its wrong to not have the same personility or charm of Bayonetta?

Why doesn't Eve get the benefit of the doubt though? It's not like we know the story or measured her character with a single trailer.

If Bayo 1 released today, will it still be acceptable or is it excused now because it released quite some time ago? Double standards either way.

Saw a few shitty Twitterwitter Posts from him and he's concerned about "Nazis".

That you call him far right makes no sense.
Did you see his sexy cosplay pictures??😆🤣

He's definitely not far right.

The game and character design look genuinely crap.

Just because you want to bang the character doesn't mean you have to blindly defend your waifu.

Jeez.
Always gotta love the canyon-level jumps made when liking or enjoying a character design entirely means you want to bang them. I'm sure all the ladies who love Bayonneta and such would appreciate that.

I perfectly understand people who don't like sexy design in serious games, she would look utterly stupid in tlou2.

But look the rest of the fucking game boys, it's some bombastic scifi with monsters, there is nothing realistic or immersive in all of that, they can design her whatever they want.
Seriously. I don't find her anywhere near out-of-place compared to what else is going on screen. It's all clearly over-the-top and out there when it comes to fantasized/sci-fi designs.

This is the main thing for me. Speaking for myself at least, I'd never paid it no mind if he had just said something akin to "definitely not a big fan of this design, but I can see why it'd appeal to others". But instead he starts talking about some bizarre screed where "modern audiences" won't care for it or it'd be out of touch somehow (and then goes on to say Forespoken is clearly better suited for "Modern Tastes" or whatever). Again this flies in the face of most actual reports and reception compared to other games whose gigantic revenues are based on these sorts of designs (See anything Gacha, or Genshin Impact, etc.). And again we've recently had characters like 2B whose design is one of the most liked and iconic in recent years.

Thankfully Asia still gives fuck all about these types of "Modern Audience" sensibilities. Granted as has been noted some of the larger companies like Square Enix are clearly being influenced. But the majority still says "fuck it". Korea especially I'm sure would be even more militant about this than Japan, again, has anyone seen their popular media lately?

Lets just call it what it is: Virtue signalling.

And as we all know by now, its a common form of social camouflage for scumbags.

Hmm, it's certainly dated looking and not the most imaginative of characters but I have no issues with the character other than that. Looking forward to playing the game though.
Not sure why I've not once heard him say anything similar about the characters in Crysis though. 🤷‍♂️

And? Since when saying what woman should be and should not be from a fucking white American man point of shity view is progressive? A progressive should only accept people for what they are. Alex is fucking trash!

I understand not liking the character design but saying she doesn't fit in the modern era and comparing her to the main character from Forspoken is just....weird.

He says Forspoken's MC has a "more modern design" he does realize that she is supposed to be from the real world right? Presumably the modern one. They are not similar games nor are the going for similar styles.

The gameplay in both looked great so 🤷🏾‍♂️

well the protagonist in project eve is obviously designed to capture your attention, just like bayonetta, however doesnt mean the game will be bad.
I dont mind though ; )
Ok but bayonetta had charisma and sense of humour...was a full and well written character too

"personality" come on now:messenger_tears_of_joy:

Shaming has and always will be a feminine tactic to get compliance from men.

The closest thing you'll get in the US is RPGs with slutty sorceresses and amazons (assuming game makers still do artwork like that).

But you can still find traditional roles which no devs are afraid to do. The dumbass meathead who carries a big gun. And the ugly comedic relief loser. Both almost always guys.

Sure, we'll see how the game comes out, but it doesn't appear to be something they wanted to highlight, in contrast with other assets.
