Martin Campbell, who directed Pierce Brosnan's first turn as James Bond in Goldeneye, is returning for the 21st film Casino Royale, based on the first Bond adventure written by Ian Fleming in 1953. MGM is targeting for a November, 2006 release.

The director talked to the New York Daily News about the movie, which will feature a new actor as 007. "There are things that will have to be changed from the original novel," says Campbell. "The Cold War elements will have to be reconfigured, for example, but 'Casino Royale' will be a grittier, tougher and more realistic Bond movie.

"We'll be getting away from the huge visual effects kind of films," he added. "In the new film, Bond is essentially starting out in his career, and has just recently become part of the double-0 section."

"The idea is to put a bit of the dash back in Bond. By the end of the movie, the character will have been forged into the wiser, harder Bond we know."

Woo! After watching a bunch of old Bond movies on Encore over the last month I'm really excited about this.

Thank Christ. The last one was one of the worst movies I've seen in recent years.. just give me some Splinter Cell-style ownage, none of this flashy surfing on waves caused by glaciers that're melted by the sun's rays.

Don't forget the crappy Madonna theme with the MTV editing during the intro -_-

BOOK = Good
Director = Good
BOND = ??? Me worried
Script Adaptation of Book = UP in the air

50 50 chance so far. Odd are getting better and better. I'm gonna miss pierce, they waisted one of the best james bonds on some of the shitties scripts in bond history.

For some reason i want a stupid 80's bond with Timothy Dalton in it, but thats cause of some kick ass cheezy dream i had.

EDIT same here ;) :D

What a coincidence, I'm watching License to Kill right now on Encore :lol

i hope they don't just try to copy Bourne Identity or something. I don't like the sound of a "gritty" and "realistic" Bond. He's supposed to be smooth, not Sam Fisher.

A triple coincidence as I was just listening to Duran Duran's title track for A View to a Kill.

Christopher Walken needs to be a Bond villian again. The scene where he wipes out his own workers after they finish their job with uzis as they try to crawl back up from underground is awesome.

Bourne Identity and Supremacy are in another league from any Bond film in the last decade or more. He can be smooth without them ruining it with ridiculous and over the top special effects. The old Bonds won by smarts with a little technology thrown in, not the opposite.

i know. I want them to get away from the over the top stuff too, but even with the classic Connery Bond flicks, "gritty" and "realistic" aren't exactly the words that come to mind.

There can be only one new bond: Clive Owen
Which looks incredibly unlikely given this Bond is younger and has just been promoted to double-o status. Casting could be interesting...

While he previously was believed to have passed on the role due to his Nip/Tuck schedule, UK's The Mirror now says Julian McMahon is one of two frontrunners for James Bond in the upcoming Casino Royale.

The 36-year-old Australian reportedly said: "I'm a big James Bond fan. I met the producers for a final audition. They told me to expect a decision in a couple of months and they said it was between me and one other person. It's going to be a very nervous wait."

The other person in the frame is believed to be British actor Clive Owen.

Its a shame the quentin tarantino and pierce brosnan thing never happened. That could have been awesome. Instead they just ripped QTs idea off.

While I love Nip/Tuck, I just can't see him as Bond at all.

what, do they not remember what happened the last time an Aussie was Bond?

i had NO idea he was austrailan until i saw him on the Late Late show a few weeks ago speaking with an accent. And thats after watching 2 seasons of Nip/Tuck religiously.I was like "WTF!?". Guess thats a testament to how good of an actor he is though.

Colin Farrell can drop his accent any time he wants, that doesn't mean he's a good actor.

Die Another Day is some of the funniest shit ever commited to film. I know it was the 20th one, and I gave them the benefit of the doubt... it's a fine excuse to go completely bombastic and OTT with things... but man...

The invisible car, rediculous, but cool. John Cleese, great. But Bond drove some kind of F1 car at full pelt in the arctic, while being chased by a laser focused from the suns rays... shot from some kind of cannon in space, straight out of Final Fantasy: Spirits Within. He then drives the thing off some kind of glacier/cliff edge, where the car gets caught. He peels off some of the car's chassy, uses his parachute to get down to the sea's waves below and uses the piece of car as a fucking surf board :lol I laughed my ass off in the cinema. I have to admit, I was really entertained by the audacity of it all.

i wasn't talking about Colin Farrell. He's a shitty actor regardless of the accent.
You said that Julian McMahon's ability to drop his accent was a testament to how good of an actor he is and I was showing that any shitty actor can do the same thing. Julian McMahon is perfect in his role on Nip/Tuck, he just goes against everything we've seen so far in the Bond character and doesn't seem like a good fit.

yes but im not an actor, nor do i have a foreign accent. i don't know how easy/hard it is to do.

It's not that hard to speak in another accent when you have a linguist coach. Let Julian McMahon make crappy movies like the Fantastic Four, keep him away from Bond.

From the looks of that picture, I think he could make an appearance in the next Austin Powers movie as a long lost family member. :lol

Bond Shortlist Is Revealed

Clive Owen and Daniel Craig are fighting it out to become the sixth James Bond, insiders say.Executives for the next movie will choose either Owen or Craig to succeed Pierce Brosnan.Brosnan, 51, will not appear in the next film, Casino Royale, after he failed to agree terms.

Owen, 40, and Craig, 37, are said to have beaten off competition from early contenders such as Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe.

Ewan McGregor and Colin Farrell were also in the running, before Owen and Craig captured the imaginations of the 007 producers.

Then again, that is apparently from The Sun :lol

But still, Clive Owen must be Bond. He's perfect for it.
