Disneyland and Walt Disney World Changing Splash Mountain (Guess Why)

The Walt Disney Co. on Thursday announced the classic ride Splash Mountain would be retooled at its parks amid outcry over its ties to the controversial 1946 film, Song of the South.

Splash Mountain first opened at Disneyland in 1989 and the ride was subsequently added to Walt Disney World and other parks around the globe.

The ride will be rebrand for The Princess and the Frog. The celebrated 2009 animated film featured an African American female protagonist.

It was probably going to happen eventually anyway, I mean the Norway ride was re-tooled to be Frozen-themed. Can't really say I'm upset about this. Hell, yeah Song of the South's backlash is a bit much, BUT Princess and the Frog is a much better movie so honestly it's an improvement in my eyes.

And hey, at least the ride itself is remaining. If I'm going to get outraged at a Disney World change, it's the removal of the Great Movie Ride. Fuck you, it's HOLLYWOOD Studios, you don't take out the ride that focused on cinema as a whole. They also removed Pizza Planet. Yeah, the pizza wasn't the best, but then just make the pizza better. Now it's based off Rizzo from Muppets. Yeah, I like Muppets, but pizza is not as synonymous with them as motherfucking PIZZA PLANET is. Come on!

I've been thinking about this kind of thing, what is worse? They actually doing that or we getting outraged that they do it?

I mean, this kind of bs causes hopelessness in me, some sadness mixed with disbelief, it's so stupid, it's so tiresome, it's so incredibly dumb, yet it breaks a little piece inside me, because "Why? Why are we bowing to this fucking morons?". And then it seems so little, it's such a small thing, but they never stop, it's always something, it's always a little thingy, it gets to the point where it feels like one of these days people will flip out and shit will go south like really bad, and the problem is, all I can think is "deservedly so".

It'll never go south and people won't lose their shit.

Most people are up to their eyeballs in debt and need their job, friends and family. Push comes to shove, most people won't risk that over something so small.

Wage slaves are extremely passive. Mix in smart phones, Netflix and twitter and all you have is a zombie nation consuming and doing what they're told.

No step is ever too big, they always boil the frog slowly

no one would give a shit if places just took some responsibility and did this stuff gradually as it makes sense over time. if disney wants to modernize their ride with a new theme, that's their prerogative.

it's the capitulation that gets people pissed off.

I agree about the actual laziness in the response to all this, but I'm not ready to throw in the towel on people just yet. It takes time for movements and countermovements to build steam.

But it also takes effort, and conservatives, classical liberals, and independents opposed to this stuff have got to start organizing, protesting, filing suits, and a thousand other things, as opposed to writing lengthy dissertations on their favorite safe space about how bad/funny it all is.

We're in a cultural war, and only one side seems to realize.

Breaks my heart personally. In my years working there, Splash was one of the most fun rides. Lots of good times and memories. And I kind of liked the absurdity of it all but eh, I’m old. I’m sure kids will enjoy this shit.

Time to add that to history too. I don't know how this goes down, but I'm not giving up on what so many generations of men and women worked themselves to the bone/died for, without a fight, because some dumbasses caught a mind virus.

I'm not going to stand out there alone, if the people that need to care, continue not to, but... have a little faith and optimism. Good people have faced worse and won. The best time to push back against this was ten years ago, but the second best time is now.

And unlike 10 years ago, we have a decade of these people exposing everything that they are, and the stakes. It's not just scattered micro-culture wars about Zoe Quinn and Kotaku anymore.

It's about time they updated it, but they could have done alot better than Princess and the Frog.

Almost nobody knows this brear rabbit story anymore, and you spend most of the ride just waiting for the drop.

Crazy reading posts from people who are effected by this 'news.' Surprised ift gets cold enough at Disney for snowflakes to not melt in line.

I don't know man... What is the counter action option? There's no stopping the wave with logic, there's no stopping the gnawing of the threshold with peace and reason... and I don't think people are ready or willing to violence.

Song of the South came out in 1946.. and has not been released by Disney on any format in the US. Kids don't know the movie or the characters. This should've been done a long time ago.

Consider it a cultural coup. To have a war requires opposition. The opposition is being forcefully suppressed.

I support this because I HATE half-assedness. Either release Song of the South with a Leonard Martin intro like on the Treasures DVDs explaining why some things aren’t acceptable and that it’s smarter to keep it in mind so as to learn and grow from the past, promoting the growth of society with the ride, or just tear down the whole thing. They chose the latter, can’t blame them. At least they aren’t half-assing it.

Only way I can see to stop it is to go full Ghandi with aggressive pacifism

It doesn't HAVE to be done for the very reason you just said. Why change it when 99% of people don't know the connotation?

Hell, the only reason I know of it is because of this wonderful SNL skit

Speaking of, how long until this SNL skit is purged from existence?

Soon only black people will be allowed to buy black cars and white on white cars.
Feel bad for brown and yellow people.
Blue cars are exclusive to blue haired feminist smurfs.

I think the left recently roared with all its might, essentially using every institution and bit of pressure it had, for an awesome show of force.

I don't think that's the reality. The blitzkrieg that George Floyd kicked off, I don't think represents reality, as much as it does a struggling left that's accelerating to try to smash the competition.

Maybe that's the optimistic take? But I'm a pretty big cynic, and that's kind of how I see it. This looks like a big, fat demoralizing operation. It's also an opportunity never before to show people, this is what I was talking about. This is the evidence. Is this the world you want? They've overstepped so hard, and we can use it against them.

Be you. Make your very existence an act of defiance. If enough people do that, then who knows what kind of things could happen?

The only alternative is to give up, and I'd rather lose knowing I gave it everything I had, and having fun all the while. That last part is key. Keep the joy and pride in what you know to be right, in your heart. That keeps you from burning out.

Consider it a cultural coup. To have a war requires opposition. The opposition is being forcefully suppressed.

That's true, but many are not even bothering to turn up, of their own volition. I'd like to change that.

Only way I can see to stop it is to go full Ghandi with aggressive pacifism

This is intriguing. What did you have in mind?

Yeah, I'm sick of the whole 'let's rebrand everything resembling racism,' however -- I think this ride could use an update. It's not going to change the experience. Mind you, this is Disney...I'm surprised it lasted this long. Princess and the Frog doesn't sound too bad...I'd prefer they themed Splash Mountain around something like Pocahontas.

They might change the Frozen ride because cold and frigid lesbians as a stereotype is offensive.

Will they call it "giant cock in a 6 year old boys ass mountain"?

Thats all the rage and progressive right now amrite? don't @ me because I am in NAMBLA. If your agains that you are clearly a racist. #NAMBLA + #BLM #4LIFE #RideorDie

Its interesting Brer Rabbit is pretty much a folklore stories and tales from Africa that was passed down eventually to the slaves in America and was then collected into a book. He is pretty much the archetype for a free slave who outwits the slave masters. They moved the things people would find problematic from the movie. But I’m down either way love the princess and the frog. Villain actually kills a hero then gets dragged to hell at the end. Shits wild.

Just keep calling it Splash mountain, just keep calling it Columbus Ohio, Just keep calling it Dixie....dont let repurposed culture dictate your words or expressions, you change culture to dictate your words and expressions or in this case, keep them what you want

This would be a minor nothing if it wasnt surrounded by a mountain of daily delusion and forced normalization of nonexistent spectors.

Its known as splash mountain not because of any connotations with an old movie but because its been known as splash mountain for so long. We know what splash mountain is as an american simply by mentioning it whether you have been on it or not. Keep calling it splash mountain because the name is already the connotation for the ride.
