So I haven't been making music for like a few months now until about a few days ago, and for all the hardship (meaning 10 hours of work, puny for a song) this is the result. Made of Clay. My best work yet no doubt. Lyrics I plan on working in soooooooon as soon as I get the guts to actually walk up to the mic and spit my lungs out... but that hasn't happened yet :)

Anyways... here it is :D

Made of Clay (instrumental)

Did you play anything on this? What programs did you use? The song is pretty good, a little repetitive, doesn't do that much for me but it's cool. I'm not sure how well you can add vocals to something like this. Nice job overall though.

I have a new metal song here. It's actually most of my friends since he writes the majority of the songs and I'm not really into metal that much anyway. It's a little repetitive but we plan on adding vocals and other instruments (real drums, bass, keys).

Also be warned the quality is pretty crappy since we don't have any real gear:

I just checked and the links don't seem to be working now. Soundclick is always down. :(

None of it is off an instrument.

I used Fruity Loops Pro with it's standard real drum kit sounds with steinberg electric guitars VST (they absolutely suck in terms of flexibility) in combination with FL Slayer throughout the song. Afterwards i mastered with iZotope ozone 3. Godly tool.

Everyone hates on fruity loops, but i'm aiming to prove them wrong!

and after listening to it a few more times i realise what you're saying about the repetitiveness.

I think now the second half of the first chorus has to go, which will end up making the transition into verse 2 a lot smoother and making the ending more abrupt (after the 2nd part of the 2nd chorus), as well as making a little variance to the 2nd verse (not so much into the tone or anything but so it ends up being sort of like a 2 part repeat instead of a 4 part repeat.

It would make the song become about a minute shorter and will lose a lot of the repetitiveness. Will try doing that right now :)

Kick ass.

I'm just starting out with this kind of thing myself. I had no idea MIDI could kick that much ass. Do I need any special equipment or did you do it all with FruityLoops?

Right now I'm using SoundStudio II that came free with a POS MIDI controller, and my SoundBlaster Live. My stuff sounds like SNES music. :lol

well regular midi stuff will sound like snes music.

You need to look into getting VSTs (for free ones, check out a site like http://www.kvraudio.com/ ) and working on mastering the song/sounds before it outputs so you get just the right feel you're looking for in both the song and the instruments.

For the song Dance till you cannot i used the faurbrausch v2 vst, which was designed for 64 KB pc demos, yet it's still one of the better sounding songs and people who have listened to my work agree. It's not really the instruments (though having some quality instruments do help) but the best stuff happens behind the scenes.

Do you still need lyrics for this song? I was inspired and wrote some. Got about half the song done.

wow. ummm... yeah! Totally need lyrics :)

want to be the singer too? hehe

if not that's cool, i'll just have to be patient with myself and get the blood flowing. Or maybe I can get my brother to sing them since he has his own band and has already put out the CD... hmmmmmmmmm!

edit: show me what you got so far :D

Yeah, singing is what I do after all. My mic is of even lower quality than my MIDI gear though :lol, so if you like the lyrics we'll see where it goes from there. I could probably drop a couple hundred bucks if I had to.

And since you're a total stranger on the internet I gotta PMC the lyrics first, so I'll PM them to you in a couple days.

it's cool man, i understand

and if anything is recorded i can always try to master it and clean up the sound if anything.

(and plus i give credit where credit is due, because then the song would be technically half yours :p)

edit: and thanks for making the effort

It'll be better when it has lyrics, since they won't be as repetitive. Try listening to any metal song without lyrics, it'll be as repetitive as this song if not moreso.

Yeah, it all comes down to the lyrics.

When you listen to say a rap song don't you realise it's mainly the same core beat and tune repeated over and over again?

As long as the lyrics are fresh all the way through the song it isn't that big of a deal. I'd say the one main fail part of my song is the "extras" area. you know... noise here... extra clash there... some piano in the background somewhere... but i haven't fully mastered that yet :p

Nice, I'm glad to see more people on this board involved with electronic music. My reason 3.0 should be coming in today and although you can't use plug ins with it I still like the program a whole lot. I got the academic discount so I only had to pay 200.

I use fruityloops for my tracks too. I use sfz player (freeware) to play soundfonts, in fact the only live instrument I ever record is my guitar, heh.
