TR: Some people felt Django Unchained shone a light on part of the African-American story. What do you think?

LD: You know, this is a first because I've avoided this question. But I'm going to give you the real. Django Unchained -- I was deeply hurt by the movie. I was deeply offended by the movie. The movie made me angry. [Quentin Tarantino] has no right to our word; he has no right to that n-word. None. None. And thank you, Spike Lee, for speaking up and for having the balls to speak up. Thank God Spike Lee finally spoke up. I thought I was going crazy. Nobody else said anything; it was like everybody else thought it was great. No, it's not great for you to use "nigger," man! Who do you think you are?

I can't talk about it because it's very upsetting. And I'm expressing my opinion just like everybody expresses their opinion about my films one way or the other ... There were great performances in the film. But I think African Americans, because we're so hungry to see ourselves on the big screen, we'll see anything.

TR: Do you think black people are a little too sensitive when it comes to in the n-word?

LD: No, I think we have to be sensitive about it. Anyone who's seen my movie The Paperboy knows exactly what I'm talking about. I make a big deal about the usage of the word. That word is a nasty word. It's a vile word. I think that we own the word. Period.

I can't judge from a white man's perspective if he's using the n-word. He made that word up in a negative way, so if he's using it, then it's negative to me. He has no right to it. I think that we own the word and we can do with it as we will ... Does a woman like being called "bitch" a certain way? ... Do Jews like being called their derogatory word? There's always that word that will send a certain person that it is said of into rage. It should. Do I like being called "fag"? No, no! I'm sorry; you don't own that -- I do.

I don't believe TOO much in "don't give the word power", but seriously, don't

You're basically saying that any positive merits of Django Unchained are gone because they say nigger in it

I don't know a lot about the cowboy / western era but didn't they use that word a lot back then? It's a movie that uses words that were used in a different time. Big deal.

Which is the stupidest thing ever. He's basically saying to keep quiet or sugar coat black slavery because you can't have a movie or book or anything set about a black slave and not use that word. It's like Jews being angry over a WW2 movie where Jews are killed.

I'm baffled

Bad people said nigger. Good people didn't, unless they're black in which case it's ok. What's the problem? That a white man wrote the script?

It's not like Django is the story of a white guy called Nigger Killer who's cheered on by the cast. The fuck does he expect?

Came here to post exactly this. Spot on Dave.

During the era this movie ( because that's still what we're discussing right? ) is supposed to be set in, your people didn't own their freedom in this country, let alone 'the word'.

This is ridiculous.

He has no problem with the word itself, just when a white boy uses it. And he's accusing Quentin of racism?

Pfft.

Pretty obvious.

I may be slightly off in my estimation, but I believe that almost 90% of the humans in the movie that uttered the phrase "nigger" at any point got killed by Django or his partner.

The guy is completely overreacting.

He mentions that "the white man" invented it and meant for it to be used in a negative way so white men can't ever use it? News flash. We're individual human beings and no one has jurisdiction over how I or others can use words.

I also have to laugh when he says that because he gets offended by a word then that means he owns it. How about he attempts to exert self-control and stops blaming others for his fits of rage over a word.

This is ridiculous.

He has no problem with the word itself, just when a white boy uses it. And he's accusing Quentin of racism?

Pfft.
Pretty much.

Particularly in an artistic/creative context, which I think is the key distinction here. Tarantino has as much right to explore this part of American history as Spike Lee does.

Pathetic.

he pretty much says white people can't use the N-word but blacks can... seems like this person is against equal rights. Is that pretty much racist of him (for the lack of a better word).

Thats a rather racist and bigoted opinion.
You can't have equality if you don't move towards it. All barriers are barriers.

Also. Its a piece of fiction. If you think thats the first film to depict the common place use of the term nigger in referring to a someone with black skin then you're really not paying attention.

Best part of the film is the Three Musketeers moment, I think that fits here too.

Well, I think it's fair to say that in real life white guys probably shouldn't be going around saying nigger. But the idea white people can't have their racist characters use the word in stories is absurd.

I love the idea of a movie like Django Unchained instead having the horrible slave-trader going "Um... could...could you do that for me n-word Jim?"

Imagine that post if the UK demanded all of "their" words back.

I have yet to see the film, but it is quite common for films to use the politically incorrect words of the time to paint the setting. It would be like making a film about racists in Britain and not hearing the P word once. It's almost like pretending the issue isn't there. Sweeping it under the carpet won't teach anyone anything.

He is just getting his work assignment in

NSTRUCTOR NAME: The Spirit Of All Our Black Ancestors

As a bonus you may also use this assignment to prove how much smarter and sophisticated you are than other negroes through your love / hatred or indifference of D’Jango Unchained.

He ain’t made a good movie in 10 years!”• formulate a research question that you hope to answer. Questions such as:“Why is Spike Lee a bitch ass hater who don’t want to see a movie about slavery?”“Who the fuck does Dick Gregory think he is?”

“Which utterances of “nigger” were appropriate and which made you feel awkward?”

“How many white people were in your theater and did they laugh at the appropriate times?”

“Why wasn’t there more slavery in the film?”

“Why was there too much slavery in the film?”

“Why didn’t this film solve racism?”

“How did this film make up for 400 years of black oppression at the hands of white people?”

“Why was the n-word used so many times?”

“Why are all black people who disagree with you stupid sheep who can’t possibly have the same understanding and appreciation for blackness that you do?”

“Why should D’Jango Unchained be 100% accurate to all of the events that occurred during and around slavery?”

“Why should D’Jango Unchained be 100% accurate to all of the events that occurred during and around everything that’s ever happened to any black person ever at any point in time?”

“Why only sellouts and uncle Toms can’t get excited about seeing white slave masters get their comeuppance?”

“Is that one dude gay for holding Jamie Foxx’s dick?”

“Why they selling them dolls though?”

“How can a white man make this movie when Tyler Perry hasn’t even gotten a chance to make his historical opus on slavery yet?”
• create a first draft attempting to answer your question with sources or just anecdotal references from conversations at the beauty salon, barbershop, basketball court or any family get-together.
• revise the first draft for with more racial overtones and insults about anyone who potentially disagrees with your point of view.

• revise again with more racial overtones and insults about anyone who potentially disagrees with your point of view
• edit for surface errors and mechanics and realize white people don’t even care about all this.

Other resources you should consider are people on Black Twitter with controversial opinions no matter how small their follower count is.
Black celebrities who have expressed their opinion of the film or racism in general.
White celebrities who have expressed their opinion of the film or racism in general.
Quentin Tarantino interview quotes.
Anecdotal accounts of racism in your personal life.
Quentin Tarantino’s commentary on the miniseries Roots, Spike Lee’s commentary on D’Jango Unchained, Jaime Foxx’s commentary on Spike Lee’s Commentary on D’Jango Unchained, Dick Gregory’s commentary on Spike Lee’s commentary, Toure’s D’jango article

first, who the fuck is Lee Daniels?

I really find these kind of people sad, its a movie and its set in time when the N word was said to everyone with dark skin.

He's talking about present time not the setting of the film.

I know... I'm referring to, like Lee Daniels in this case, how someone could get upset over this when used in an 'artistic' context like a movie or what have you.

Lee Daniels wants to live in a world in which certain words are to be used only by people of a specific race? Sounds like progress.

He thinks he lives in a world where you can describe someone (as a person, not describing their appearance) as 'a white man' and complain about race at the same time and not look a bit odd.

He's talking about present time not the setting of the film.

He's referencing the use of the word in the film. However, he's commenting like Tarantino walked up to him and called him the n-word for a couple of hours. It's just a really weird comment. The movie is set in a time where people used the word.

I can only compare it to a warmovie in which the Germans speak English. It makes no historic sense and ruins the movie as far as I'm concerned.
If this movie takes place in a time where the word is used, by all means, use the word. It only makes sense.
