Do I adopt a dog?

I already have a loyal and beautiful GSD in my Ellie but am wondering whether to adopt another dog to give it a good life.

Anyone ever deal with adoption dogs before? What was your experience like?

Thank you man, most people on this site would beg to differ with that opinion however aha!

I just wanna give a dog a good life, I love them all to pieces, I took care of a stray dog who I got a hold of via a friend of a friend who found it on a roadtrip before who literally couldn't walk properly for like a year and a half, I would train it when I was working from home on my beats making money through that.

The day I got to take that same dog up the woods and watch him run around all happily actually made me tear up, he was an older boy so sadly he didn't live long but I made sure he had an amazing life.

I just love the idea of giving unfortunate animals, children etc. a good life.

That is why when I am older I would rather adopt than have my own children.

If you're willing to adopt a disabled dog, then that's great. Same with old dogs - no one wants them and they usually live out the rest of their days in a shelter (assuming it's a country without a policy of puting unwanted animals to sleep). I just hope that you realize it's gonna require double the effort to take care of it (I also mean that financially - you should expect more trips to the vet).

Adopting a dog from the street is definitely more... unpredictable. All sorts of diseases can come up when you take it to the vet. With a dog from a shelter you should be given an overview of the dog's health situation so that's less risky.

If you want a dog, adoption is definitely the way. From a shelter.

They are checked and taken care of. They usually have a rock hard immune system and don't have much problems. (unless of course they are old, like the poster above me said)

I would defo go for a smaller mixed breed dog.

Yeah I am aware it may be more financially, I can handle that luckily.

Yeah I am from UK and we have a lot of abused dogs here from scumbags so wanna give some a good life.

I will have to really think it through as I haven't take care of a dog that wasn't mine from the start since a stray dog a long while back.

Thank you man!

I know what you mean, even if you have the best intentions it's always a lottery. You can get lucky and pick up a loving dog that will accept you almost instantly or various stuff can come up based on the animal's past trauma. A friend of mine had a dog who was becoming very aggressive when it saw people with umbrellas, presumably because it was being abused with one as a puppy. She kept the dog anyway and just tried to minimalize the problem.

Anyway good luck, we need more people willing to adopt dogs instead of buying them. :)

Depends on what ya looking to adopt. My friend recently adopted one that had an awful upbringing (a ton of scars, similar to bird shot wounds) and they are spending a hell of a lot of time, effort and patience in giving it a good home, its a pitbull too which makes their personalities difficult to work.

There are some dogs in shelters that are fine and might have nothing particularly wrong with them but those dogs generally get picked up pretty quickly anyway. Most shelters, at least around me do checks, make sure the owner is aware of the type of dog and possible mental or health issues they may have. They generally do meet ups in the shelter so you can spend some time with them before taking them home and even if it doesnt work out they generally take them back if the dog cant settle in after a few weeks/months. You already have another dog so it could entirely depend on whether they get on or not.

Adopting a dog can be difficult but I say its super rewarding. Im not in a position at the moment to own a dog but when I do I will definitely look to adopt.

All of my dogs were adopted or from the street, usually is the dog that choice me, not the other way around.

Dogs are like children. They are fine when they are someone's else's, quiet, asleep and locked behind closed doors.

Get a cat instead.

Both of mine are adopted. Take your current dog with you to meet the new dog if you get one. Have them play a bit at the shelter for a bit. On the the way home take them to the park for a walk. That helps them get used to each other before entering your home.

I volunteer at a shelter and there are a lot of good dogs there. Both of mine were mostly trained when I got them. There are also some dogs that need to be worked with so make sure you ask questions and know what you are getting into if you pick a dog that needs more attention.
