Do NOT use Google Web Accelerator

From SA, fairly surprising--

Google has a product in testing called Google Web Accelerator. Its basically a caching proxy server that stores copies of the pages you visit or the images you view. When someone requests the same page, it tries to serve data out of the cache. This seems great, except that it means Google is likely storing private data that should NOT be available to the public. Some forum users have already gotten it to display private messages intended for other users.

and a funny article to go with--

Not really surprising. Privacy concerns are the main, no, only reason i don't jump on every new Google product down the pipe. Attack of the Show did a bit on it today, and i had heard about it on GAF before, but thought it was mainly for dailup. After finding out it was a caching proxy server versus a simple image optimizer, it was pretty obvious it would have some nasty side effects, but some of the problems i've seen posted on various sites are pretty funny/scary. Good thing it doesn't cache SSL connections.

The beta warning is legit, but Google's usually pretty good with their new services. This is a major disappointment coming from, though on the other hand, it's not surprising considering how it works.

I just turned it off and noticed that it's faster with it off anyway. Google -1, for now. Which now leaves them at 999,998.

I would bang a hot farmer!
Reading about the way it worked was enough for me not to install it. I bet that most installed it without reading anything just because it was from Google.

A lot of people are reluctant to use Gmail because they're scared that Google will "read" through their email. Pfft.
We'll see where this goes.

I must have missed the concerns over other google services.

What security/privacy issues are there with Gmail? With their desktop search? With Autolinking and bloggers?

I'm so out of the loop, but at least I know not to get Google's Web Accelerator.

I think Gmail reads your email in order to target ads towards you.

We've blocked access to GAF through it.
If you mean you've blocked the ability to come to GAF with the accelerator, you haven't.

I'm an admin at another site, and I re-installed this for testing purposes there. I remembered your post and came to see if GAF would work. Here I am, making this post :)
