Do you buy Budget titles?

By that I mean Platinum / Greatest Hits / Player's Choice games?

I don't... but I've been thinking about skipping that policy and just buy whatever is cheap. I mean, the game is still the same. It's just looks a little different in the collection.

What do you guys think?
 
I've somehow managed to end up without any GH titles, but it's not been out of conscious attempt to avoid them. (Sure, the stripes are ugly, but the game plays the same, so I don't really care.) I know what kind of games I enjoy, so I buy those games at release and rarely pick up anything later ... hence, no GH.
 
Although it's not my first choice, I'm not against buying re-releases.

I hate to admit it, but a lot of games in my PSone collection have that gnasty puke-green Greatest Hits stripe on them.
 
I always try for the non-GH version but at the GH price. I'm a collector so superficial things may not matter to you but greatly does matter to me.
 
Budget releases are about all I buy nowadays, at least for consoles. The various greatest hits lines are a godsend for me. I quit "collecting" awhile back and have just been enjoying the games. Looking over my (pathetically small compared to past systems) library of games for current systems, I'd say 80-90% of it is composed of greatest hits/platinum/player's choice.

Same here. The only one I've failed to find is Sonic Mega Collection for cube, and it still bothers me having to see that yellow stripe on the shelf. I only bought it because it was some insane Fry's deal where it cost something like $5. Also, the GC yellow stripe is one of the better greatest hits schemes. Playstation green, on the other hand, I just plain refuse to own. It really sucks, too - I would've bought probably 5-10 psx GH games by now if they hadn't used that hideous packaging.
 
At $5 or less I can put my collector pride aside, for a while. I'll still end up hunting for the non-GH if I really care about that $5 title.
 
No, I don't like the packaging compared to the originals. What I do sometimes is wait for a GH to come out than find a used copy in good shape with the original packaging if possible.
 
I just (accidentally) got my first PC GCN title. I bought Star Fox Adventures, and I handed the guy the box on the shelf, which wasn't a Players Choice box, and somehow switched it without me noticing and gave me the gay yellow stripe. I didn't look in the bag until I got home :/ I try to avoid them, although I have a ton of Greatest Hits boxes for PS2/PSOne. I bought the systems late, so I had little choice.
 
Buying greatest hits game is a great idea. I know some of you run out and buy every game the day it's released, and usually don't even unwrap them until 6 months later because your queues are so large. Why not just wait until you have time to play the game and save yourself $30?
 
I bought Pac-Man World 2 Player's Choice for the Pac-Man Vs. disc. And Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution. But I generally avoid the re-released versions. Though I will buy the ORIGINAL print when a game becomes PC/PH/GH because it's cheap.

i really hate to be anal about aesthetics when i'm not that anal about the aesthetic value of the game itself, but i am. i've got a few, mostly Playstation titles, and most recently the PC version of Soul Calibur II. My friend got it for me, and i wasn't about to bitch about something so trivial. Despite the fact that i'm no Tekken fan, i own the GH Tekken 3 and i'd really like to get the regular version. The CD is has a very nice full-color pick of Bryan, Julia, and a couple other characters i can't remember.

The game would have to be extremely good and cheap ($5-$10) for me to consider a "budget" version of it.
 
I buy them all the time, along with used games. As long as they run and won't break in a year, who gives a shit what version they are or if they're dirty?

It doesn't matter to me. I prefer the non-strip versions but I'll buy them if thats all there's left.
 
If i happen to find the game, regardless of whether its budget or the original case, I buy it. I buy games for the game, not to ogle the case.
 
I always go on ebay for games without the greatest hits and players choice ugliness.
A lot of the time I can get them that cheap on ebay before they even become budget titles.

I don't own any games with the budget markings on them.
 
Only ones like these I've bought were DMC, SM64, MK64, FFT, F-Zero GX, Amped, PGR, and MG:TT.

Then this year I bought Katamari Damacy, of course, and Castle Shikigami 2. I got my co-workers into Katamari as well.
 
I can't say I care too much about it, I just don't happen to own any. I've been meaning to get DMC for awhile though, and I know it has the stripe.

Though, I do have a bunch of PC N64 games. The gold on those boxes wasn't that noticeable (and looked pretty good, actually).
 
All the time. I sometimes will buy a console game for full price, but almost never will I purchase a PC game at full price. Mostly because my PC is getting a little old and the only games it will play have dropped in price anyway. :D

A recent example: I was in the mood for some hawt action and was looking at PoP: WW. However, $49.99 was too much for one game. Instead, I bought Diablo II ($20), Icewind Dale ($10), and The Longest Journey ($10). For $10 less I got a hell of a lot more game, although one isn't an action game.

I suppose collectors would avoid player's choice due to the box alterations, but for cheap ass gamers like myself, budget titles are the stuff we live on.

And Icewind Dale is kicking my ass. :(
 
Most def. I really cant stand spending $50 on games anymore since my time to play them is so limited. Noting wrong with waiting, unless its absolutely must have, and snagging it for $20 a year later. I dont give a shit about the box.
 
This is why I haven't purchased Soul Calibur II yet for the GCN -- I wanted it at the budget price but without the yellow stripe. My search continues....
 
I care jack shit about whether nor not the box/disk art is GH/PH/PC or not...last year i got 3 GH PS2 games for $15 each, and yesterday i finally picked up Soul Calibur II for GC.
 
God you people are retarded, haha. It's just a freakin box! Who cares whats on it?! Just play the damn games. I swear some people care more about image than they do the actual games.
 
90% of the games I buy are $15 or less, whether they're part of a budget line or not. For what it's worth, the games I'm most likely to buy at release are Japanese games that are released in the US at a budget price: ie. Katamari Damacy, Space Channel 5: Special Edition, and the like. At least they're not developed specifically with a $10-$20 price in mind unlike Ford Racing 2 and Spec Ops and the like.

I recently picked up the Xenogears greatest hits, because honestly, at the time the original was going for quite a pretty penny.

Then I found the original version at the record store for less than the greatest hits version. Anyone want to buy a sealed GH Xenogears?

I buy a new game for full price maybe evey other month,there are too many budget or greatly priced used games everywhere now.

If a game has no manual then forget it then. I'd rather have the original package come packed together than to have it half missing. A sweet little fun game like BattleStar Galactica took me forever to find because they must have made a small print of them and the used copies had no manuals in my area. I eventualy found the game for new at a mom and pop store for cheap.

Well, either that or we care about both the game and its packaging/presentation. Liking to have nice-looking boxes on our shelves for months or years doesn't mean we don't care about the games inside them.

What I really don't get is why people who don't give a shit about nice packaging care if we give a shit about it. It doesn't affect you in any way.
 
I try to get a normal copy of the game as soon as they go budget, works like a charm.

They only game I have that has budget box art is Halo, but the Halo/official controller bundled was on sale for the same price as a controller i just had to buy it.
 
I think now a days you are almost force to buy at least a few just becuase of how expensive gaming has become. I think they should just make the cases a bit less...how should i say, vibrant, other than that...cheers for budget titles :)

Only GH-type game I own is VF4 Evo, which is well worth the "red stripe of shame."

Otherwise, I buy non-GH games when they've dropped in price, like getting R&C: UYA used for ~$35 from EB.com recently.
 
I was gonna pick up all 3 espn 2k5 budget titles but those fucks at vc/sega have taken out Online Play out of the Pal version.

So much for the Pal love.
 
I almost never buy games at 49.99... usually in two weeks you find it on sale somewhere for for $35.... only exception this past year is Halo2... and I bought a couple of PC GC games for my brothers kids for xmas.

The horrible quality of Virtua Fighter 4/Evo aside, I don't think the game really counts as a budget game. I mean it IS a budget game in the greatest hits packaging, but really there's no other way to get the game. That's just how it was released.
