From years past. When you could have a thread about black market organ trading in Wisconsin, and someone would get the reply and say something like "Super Mario Sunshine sucks," and some puffed anus souffle would immediately say /thread like there was nothing else to discuss because Chief Clout declares it so.

What happened to that? Was it the purge? Did everyone doing those reprehensible things go to Era and All systematically get banned in the first six months anyway, or?

This shit keeps me up at night.

thread re-opened/

I think that was a wider internet trend, not just isolated to GAF. Saw it on Reddit all the time, too. Probably died out the same way I can haz cheezburger memes did in the late 00's.

Unless on GAF the joke was that the reply is in no way related to the topic like OP describes. That would be something different.

Thank God that it (mostly) died

People were more interested in throwing a funny one liner than improving the discussion

I see it all the time at the other place. Still happens here from time to time.

Died out naturally. Might have something to do with the emergence of Twitter, Instagram, and others becoming the more common social media outlet instead of traditional forums. "/thread" doesn't translate to those outlets so they slowly forgot about it or never used it to begin with.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
I feel like reactions becoming available curbed a lot of that. Now people can just react to the first post, rather than endlessly posting about how they agree with the first post.

"Yikes" is the one that always bothered me the most. Also "not a good look". They were basically a pointer arrow for "let's dogpile this post for 2-3 pages", and then the mods joined in half the time.

Die on the hill was a reference to Teletubbies and or Hobbitown and respective topology of both worlds.
