Do you have any self-imposed gaming restrictions?

DarienA

The black man everyone at Activision can agree on
You know... only play certain genre's... only play certain days.... only play certain hardware, etc... anything like that?

For me it's no online gaming. My free time is tight and online gaming would suck it all out and I'd never make progress on any of my games that have beginnings and actual endings.... so I'm trying to stay focused on that... In addition I'm trying to get in to play 2 games at a time... just to help move my pace along, that's not working too well yet I need to find a better way to slice my time between the two games...

No online gaming at the moment due to time constrictions
No RPGs for the same reason
No new games until i clear some of my current backlog (may break this for RE4)

No online gaming for me, either.

These days I stick to one game at a time (so lately I've been getting my ass kicked by SMT: Nocturne every day after work).

I had to force myself to uninstall Diablo II because it was too much of a timesink.

I don't buy Sony hardware early.

That's pretty much it. I don't play online games either, but that's not a self imposed restriction, it's just having a crap PC and no money.

Rule #1 is don't play a game because you feel obligated to complete it. If you're not having fun, stop playing. Immediately. I play games to have fun, not to justify the $50 I spent/wasted, or so I don't get hit with the cliche'd "you didn't unlock the fun" arguement on some message board.

Addendum to Rule #1: If the idea of making a "does this game get any better? Convince me to keep playing" thread on GAF even enters my mind I must immediately kick my own ass.

I make myself play SF3rd and SC2 every week, mostly just in practice mode, to keep my input sharp.

I was doing good playing Halo 2 online everyday until last weekend.

Pretty much any game that I want to stay competitive in, I try and play often. I've noticed that my skill can degrade fast if I let myself get "cold."

I don't have restrictions all the time, but if I start to see my backlog building then I'll impose a 2 game at a time limit and no new purchases, for a month or so. I'm not sure whether to that until the end of February at the moment. Depends how much I want Shadow of Rome. Plus I have essays, and I need to start revising my modules from last for my finals.

At the moment I'm thinking no games, until RE4 and MGS3 in March, then nothing until my exams are over.

What's credit-feeding?

Throwing rolls of quarters down the gullet of an arcade machine so that you can play for three to five more minutes. (Think of the more recent Gauntlet games, or the Simpsons four-player brawler.)

Yeah, what Prospero said, or doing the same thing on an arcade-like console game with continues. Credit-feeding through a game doesn't give me any feeling of achievement and leaves me having not learned the game at all. Doing it for practice is okay in my book, though.

I only play games on my backlog shelf, containing games I've decided to finish (to a certain degree). When the backlog is small enough, I can buy new games I want. :P

The Gauntlet that was in the rec center at college had many a hours logged by me playing in between classes. Worse yet was it told you how much you spent playing the game when you beat it. Ughh, something like 50-60 bucks easily if not more.

I am a cheap ass gamer.

Buy no game OVER $20.

Buy no console OVER $150.

Do not play any game that has additional fees.

Do not play past midnight (I sound like a Gremlin now).

It is too bad that I won't play a game like RE4 for another year or two .. but thems the rules.

I try to limit myself to playing only games that have plots and clear goals. So more RPG's and adventure games, less online shooters and sports games, where you just do the same thing over and over again.

Civilization 2/3 - Far too addictive, I have spends whole days just playing these.

And no more Counter-Strike, I spend far too much time with that one. Actually I don't even want to play the game anymore.

I spent $75 to beat Gauntlet Legends. It's the single biggest shame of my gaming career. It was as if I "won" in one sense, but in another, more accurate sense, I lost seventy-five freaking dollars.

That is dead on for me too. I've got so many RPGs to play it's ridiculous. Most of them being PSX RPGs. The only one I've beaten so far is Chrono Cross.

Oh, that's my other restriction--no continues on console shooters, and no difficulty setting that's less than normal. (Which is why I've only gotten to the third stage of Gradius V, but I have stages 1 and 2 down cold.)

I now limit my Lumines play to no more than two games a day. It's like a guilty pleasure; I love the game, but I hate looking at the timer after I'm done and realizing that I'm pissing away valuable day-off time in 90 minute blocks... time spent in the game goes by a bit too quickly for my taste.

Get tired of games/distracted from them by another game about halfway through at best, and therefore hardly ever beat any games ever.

I stick to that rule pretty well, unfortunately. :(

Don't spend more than $50 on a console game (thank Arc collection for this)

Don't spend more than $5 at the arcades unless I'm on vacation (which is rare)

Don't continue more than three times at an arcade or console port of an arcade (since I usually only carry enough coins for three credits, usually)

If you fail a GTA mission or die, reset, since it's faster than buying all the weapons and armor again

Beat RPGs before moving onto another one, otherwise I get confused

Very few full price games: RE, Metroid, FF, Zelda, Mario, VF, SoulCalibur
$19.99 games are my friends
No online gaming
No gaming with extra fees
One trip to arcade per year
Clear out saves instead of buying more memory cards
Trade in at EB when there are specials

I have so many unfinished PS2 games that I decided quite a while back to be a single-console owner. If I owned an X-box or Gamecube, I'd only buy that many more games I could never finish.

-Play what I feel like when I feel like it.
-Online or off, as the mood demands.
-Take part in ridiculously frugal gaming sales and also be profligate to satisfy momentary whims.

This is my main source of entertainment, not my job.

- No online
- Extremely few $50 titles (like less than five per year)
- No games that will take me over 40 hours to beat (I just don't have the time)
- Only buy new games when I'm thoroughly finished with the old ones (though thanks to Wario64 and his crazy, crazy deals, I'm finding myself breaking this rule more and more this generation...would've thought that I would ever have a bona fide backlog?)

Only restriction I put on myself recently was not to use continue when playing 2D shooting games. (Gradius V, R-Type Final, etc.)

Buying games only when I'm ready to play them... or unless there is a one time super deal. It's stupid for me to buy RE4 right now or other recent releases if I really can't play them now. I still have 3 games I have yet to play and and I don't want to push them back any farther. Chances are that if I wait, the price will drop, and I'll end up getting two for the price of one. It's all about not getting caught up in the excessive hype and buying the game when I actually have the time. Heck, I still haven't bought Halo 2 yet.

Play three games at a time

1. First is a sports based season (currently ESPN NFL 2k5)
2. Second is a racing game (currently Burnout 3)
3. Third is a story based game (currently R&C: UYA)

I own the sports and racing game and the story based game comes from gamefly. I add games to my queue as I become interested in them and whichever game shows up...thats the one I play. I think VJ2 is next on my list.

How do you slice up your time between the 3? Play each in one session last X # of hours? Play one session for one game for X hours... next session it's X for X hours?

Not buying second hand games at least I understand they are old enough and I´m pretty sure I won´t find them (I want to give my money the ones that developed/produced the games, not just the shop).

Sometimes I need a little of space and need to sell some my own games, thing that I regret, but my, poor, excuse is that I use that money for buying new games (I never change games for others).

I´m not fan of rental. I barely rent anything.

Never pirate a game.

I don´t download roms because I understand the company has the right of the game to get a benefit whenever they want. If I want to play KOF I wait to the console version, whenever they want to release it. I just download some old roms for research and I use to erase them when I´m finished.

I tried to put a limit to the number of games I played and I failed. But now I´m perfectly happy with playing a lot of games, so it´s not a problem

1) I try to play at least 5 minutes of videogames every day.

2) I try not to play two RPGs at the same time (which I just violated by starting SO3 before i finished SMT:Nocturne)

I get about 1 hour to play a day. I either play one game in my season, play some online Burnout, or spend and hour with R&C. Sometimes I play both Burnout and R&C but that is rarely. Otherdays I don't play anything at all. Maybe 4 out of the 7 days I play.

1. I always try to play what I think will be a lesser game first, if I get two at the same time.

For example, if I got Fire Emblem GC and... Star Fox: Assault on the same day (which will probably happen), then I'd play SF:A first so I'd have an even better gaming experience already waiting for me.

2. Never go OL unless it's free (Dreamcast, PSTwo, I love you).

3. Finish the game no matter how painful the experience.

I've violated #3 a couple times with some recent PS2 RPGs.

Dude, I must have spent over 100. I had a level 99 character at one arcade.....the next time I go to the arcade, after reaching that level (I'm not joking) they moved the machine to another location. :lol :lol :lol

What a way to live your life.

Well in the back of my mind there's always a person saying "It might get better..."

Shadow Hearts: Covenant did a little. The Minish Cap REALLY did, Metroid Prime didn't, Echoes did, etc.

Games I haven't completed and won't return to are:

Vice City
Dark Cloud
SMT: N
Phantom Brave
Whiplash!
Crimson Skies

and more.

Usually I bear through some games like the above though, and the result has a 50% chance of ultimately being satisfying.

Right now, it's one game at a time. I had Paper Mario:TTYD, MP2:E and Pikmin 2 for Christmas,s and am playing them in that order. In retrospect, I should maybe start playing games in alphabetical order.

I should do this. Im now sitting with at least 6 RPGs that are all started and or halfway done :|

-I've restricted myself to only playing portable RPG's ... not only for time-consumption reasons, but portable RPG's are often more experemental and less traditional...

-As a collector I restrict myself from trading in a game I've had longer than 3 months.

-I have an extreme bias against movie games ... I more or less restrict myself from them.

Never, ever, play games on a difficulty level below normal no matter what. Always complete on normal before deciding whether to repeat on hard.
