Do you have what others would consider a ridiculous fear or phobia? Because mine is vomiting and stomach bugs

For real, to most people throwing up is just part of life. It’s our bodies way of expelling shit that shouldn’t be in there.

But me? It’s much worse than that, to me it’s the worst possible thing that could happen. I FEAR it. From December to April (prime norovirus / stomach bug ) season I am on HIGH ALERT, I wont like go out and get a hotel so my family fends for themselves but I’m definitely isolating myself from everyone.

I’m talking full blown panic attacks, full on body shakes, nausea and a billion false alarms.

At the same time I also know it (Emetophobia) is utterly ridiculous and I shouldn’t be afraid of it.

About 10 years ago, I threw up for the first time in 23 years. It was the fear of the unknown. Not recognizing the sensations so fearing every little fucking thing with my stomach. But when it does happen? The fear is resolved for a week, cured for a week because I realize it’s no big deal and then BOOM, right back to the same old shit.

So yeah….anyone got some weird shit they fear that everyone else would just shrug their shoulders at.

A bit off topic but a couple of months ago, I threw up for the first time in my life, thanks to a terrible mix of beer, weed, and vodka. At first, I had no idea what was happening.

I genuinely thought I was dying. But then, suddenly, it all made sense… and I got that sweet, instant relief afterward

So goooood

As a Minnesotan who saw twister at waaaay too young of an age, I would say I was severely tornado phobic for about 20 years of my life.

Ive finally relaxed a bit about it a few years ago as Ive accepted them as things that just happen and the chances if being directly hit by one is insanely low. Hell, Ive only ever seen one in my life.

Also heights. Im still afraid of heights, ive panicked once before when i realized i was accidentally going up to the fourth floor at the mall of america

I don't like the being in water I can't see the bottom of. I'm used to rivers and lakes having grown up around them, but fuck the ocean.

I don't ever want to be out at open sea.

That and being drown in boiling oil. I think I was that in a Friday the 13th movie I watched too young.

I have a fear of reading about other people’s fears and phobias, it doesn’t come up that often but inconsiderate people sometimes don’t take people like me into consideration online.

I don't have a weird phobia I think...

I got the default ones basically 🤣
Arachnophobia and fear of heights.

but that fear of hights is more a fear of falling from heights, as I have no issue riding a rollercoaster for example (in fact I love rollercoasters, the higher and the crazier the better)...
it's whenever there is even a slight chance for me to do a wrong step and fall, that's when I get scared, even if it's a "safe" fall, like jumping from a highboard/diving tower.

basically, the moment it's either impossible for me to fall off or accidentally step over the edge of somewhere high, I'm fine. that's why being strapped into the seat of a rollercoaster makes it so I have no issue riding one or looking down from it while being super high up.

and I'm not sure how common this form of this phobia is, but I read somewhere that most people's fear of hights comes from intrusive thoughts that tell you you could just step over the edge without issue and die... so you're basically afraid of your own ability to jump off... so maybe the way I feel about heights is the default...
but idk 🤷🤷🤷

that reminds me of this:

...
sidenote, it's a weird show The Sketch Show. it's the only show of its kind that I know that was licensed internationally and just redid nearly all the scripts of the original in the localised variants.

this is the version of the sketch I saw as a kid:

aaaand here's the American version:

I can't watch medical shows - especially when they cut the flesh off with scapel.
And also do have a needle phobia at doctors. They can't find my vein, so have to poke around several times to get the blood.... and usually get a big bruise.

While I would never do this, the cave exploring in the movie The Descent freaks me the fuck out. The thought of being stuck in a small place I find terrifying. Even in Shawshank when he crawls through the sewer pipe at the end, that claustrophobic tunnel would be worse to me than crawling through prison skat.

Days like these...

Vertigo but it is pretty normal.

Also, i'm extremely disgusted by the processionary caterpillar, even if i generally like insects and i have no problem touching them.

It must be because i know they are extremely dangerous for dogs.

My brother, who is otherwise normal, is irrationally afraid of aliens and sharks. The movie Communion in particular fucked him up real good. This has been going on for almost 30-35 years.

I HATE the feeling of wooden ice cream sticks. And Pumice. Urgh. Worst thing ever. Just writing this gives me goosebumbs.
You must hate doctor throat inspections uh??!

Not me, but my wife will not drive on an Interstate due to an accident she was in at 19. Even just riding as a passenger she's on edge, thinks everyone is going to come over into us.

Cats, ever since I saw one kill a bird and bury it in my yard. I was shocked at such unusual behaviour I wish I took a video as nobody believes me when I tell them.

Sleeping over at someone's place and peeing my pants. Has never happened, but that thought always crosses my mind as it would be abhorrently embarrassing.
Mine was sleeping over at someone's house and not being able to sleep. I think it happened once when I was like 10 and then freaked me out for the rest of my childhood/adolescence. The worst was when I'd be at a friend's house and they would pass out at like 9:30 p.m. Because as a kid you don't feel comfortable wandering their house, so you're just trapped in their room with them while they're dead to the world.

I'd get so scared that I wouldn't be able to sleep that it became a self-fulfilling prophecy. But when I got my driver's license and a car, it completely went away because I knew I could just get up and leave if I had to.

I also had the sleeping problem and it happened a few times. It was awful because I'd get super hungry at around 6 A.M. but I knew that my friend wouldn't wake up until 9 A.M. so I'd lay on my mattress trying to make little noises and read comic books loudly flipping pages in hopes that it'd disturb his sleep and I could feign ignorance. Also, as a kid seeing the clock turn to 4 A.M. and not sleeping felt almost disturbing.

Many years ago I heard of a guy who had a phobia of little people or dwarfism. One night he was going to a nightclub celebration event with his wife and there was a bunch of little people there in a group. He had to leave the event with his wife.

My friend's girlfriend had the same phobia as you OP.

Turns out when she was very young her mom would constantly tell her during meals not to eat too fast or she would puke.

She did call me after vomiting one time and she was all proud saying it wasn't that bad 😁

I don't think its a phobia but I dont like leaving stuff like toasters and kettles plugged in when im not home, out of fear of burning down my apartment lol.
My mom witnessed a small fire in her house at night when she was 10 years old.
When I was a kid before we left the house my mom would check all the ashtrays in the house to make sure they were empty.
Once we left the house 80% of the time she would backtrack and go check again to make sure, ignoring my reassuring pleas.

More of an OCD thing born from trauma.

Yes. It was honestly hellish to be stuck at a friend's house wide awake for hours. I remember thinking about how long my family's road trip to the beach took. 9 hours. Felt like an eternity as a kid. And then thinking that I would be laying in my sleeping bag awake for that long in the dark with nothing to do!

It got to the point where I only had sleepovers at my own house for a while. Or I would go to ones with several kids because we'd end up staying up all night anyway. Looking back, I was a really neurotic 10 year old, lol. I remember complaining about it to my mom and she was dismayed that I was so nervous about falling asleep of all things.

I also got (Inherited?) minor OCD stuff like checking my alarm 3 times, making sure the volume on my TV always ends with a 0 or 5.
Also the labels of everything in my fridge have to face me 😄

Again, silly stuff.
I think I figured out why you pay out sooooo much gold my friend.

You have to count the number of golds on a page and if isn't 0 or 5 you fix that REAL quick ;)

Of course it is always appreciated!!!

Your experience sounded very similar to the short story The Jaunt by Stephen King lol. You'll understand if you read it.

The same friend told me what his mom had said to him when he couldn't fall asleep: "then you'll sleep even better the next night." And telling myself that takes away all the pressure from falling asleep. Of course, serious insomnia isn't cured by that, but for milder cases it's helped me.
