Do you like Persona 2?

I started playing it today and I'm not sure if I like it or not. It has a lot of nice, innovative concepts and some wonderful art and music too, but good lord the story is so confusing. I also can't keep track of all these japanese names either. Kobawashita...who? I'm about 4 hours in. I hope I can keep going cause it's starting to pick up a bit.

Also, you have to remember that Persona 2: Innocent Sin is the sequel to Persona 2: Eternal Punishment, so a lot of the story will fly over your head honestly.

Other way around. EP was the sequel.

Yea, I absolutely love Persona 2. The story is great, the environments are awesome, and the persona development mechanic is really cool. Fusion spells are really badass, and really gratifying when you discover them.

I have yet to finish the game, as I originally got it to fill time between two game releases. I'll definitely have to finish it eventually.

Yeah I get them mixed up all the time.

It's pretty easy to. EP is more of a "Side B" of IS than a true sequel. The US release of IS would've made EP that much better, though.

The only thing I didn't like about the game was how you had to spend a lot of time leveling up before proceeding to the next area (balance issues that were a game design choice). It broke up the continuity and pace of the game.

Everything else was ace.

Persona 2: Innocent Sin and Eternal Punishment > SMT: Nocturne + DDS1 + DDS2
no way, I like persona and all, but it's nowhere near close to nocture or DDS

I bought Persona 2 back when TRU was clearing out PS1 games... played it for about an hour, and it felt like about 50 hours went by in the 35 mins or so that I played it. I've not touched it since.

Persona 2 Eternal Punishment = BEST GAME EVER.:)

Ulala 4 lyfe!

Dude, it's all about Baofu, the underground chinese hacker that looked like Steve Tyler and Yoko Ono's love child.

You're right, it should be

Persona: IS + EP >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> SMT:N + DDS1 + DDS2
:lol but seriously shouta I played Persona 2 the one that came here, and I don't really get why you are saying it's better than Nocturne or DDS. Persona 2 battle system can't hold a candle to SMT:N or DDS the story in DDS and SMT:N is better than in Persona 2, the music is also better maybe I should play it again because I apperantly missed something that makes Persona 2 greater than one of the best RPGs this gen.

I liked Persona better then Nocturne. It has much more depth, the rumor system, demon contact system, fusion spells and generally has more things to do. Storywise, they are both excellent, but Persona is more about characterizations which some people like more. Throughout the game you have many instances where you can talk to your party members and they always have interesting things to say that are really funny or move the story along. Although, because Persona is a much older game there are somethings that aren't quite as good as Nocturne. Persona doesn't have the press icon turn system where you are punished or rewarded for hitting strengthes and weaknesses. Both games are tons better then the DDS games though.

THE FREAKIN FLAMENCO?

He's the most stylish cop ever to have set foot in a high school clock tower.

The only place you may have it right is in music because I don't recall IS and EP having particularly good soundtracks.

Other than that, IS and EP are far better than Nocturne or the two DDS games in story and gameplay.

Nocturne's story is non-existant and is basically a game that asks you whether or not you believe in this philosphy without any expounding on the subject with story related events (and if they did, it was generally terribly weak).

DDS falls totally flat on its face in the second game when they instead of working a political/character story they shifted the entire meaning of the two games into an allegory of Buddhism. They unravel everything in a giant bumble of techno-jargon in the first half of DDS2. The only time the game's story was actually remotely interesting to me was when they did the more personal content between the characters but even then that content is fairly minimal overall.

Persona 2 actually has an actual story behind some of the philosphical mumbo-jumbo and paces/unravels it in a much more interesting manner. You also have fleshed characters who have clear reasons for the way they act and feel rather than the often vague and, at times, very simplistic DDS characters.

As for gameplay, the only thing that Nocturne and DDS bring to the table is the Press Turn system and that is actual a positive and negative. I mean, it's a pretty inventive twist but ultimately, it forces you to implore a specific set of strategies and tactics to defeat each boss encounter and dungeon. It's horribly frustrating when you're trying to develop a plan of attack that isn't the one intended or have to use. This is especially true for some of the upper-end bosses and secret in DDS2 where if you do anything outside of a specific strategy, you're totally boned.

Persona 2 on the other hand implores everything that Nocturne and DDS does except the Press-Turn system and instead uses a pretty straightforward turn-based battle system. You have the Persona system which basically acts like Demons in Nocturne and the Mantra system of DDS. You have a much more advanced version of demon persuasion that you see in Nocturne. Then there's the out of battle system like the pretty neat Rumor System that ends up being woefully underused, and probably a few other things I'm forgetting.

The best part of it all is that I can actually use a strategy that I come up with =P.

While underused, the rumor system is still one of the gameplay devices in Persona 2 that has really stuck with me since then.

Innocent Sin/Eternal Punishment need a PSP remake badly. I would love to play them.

Sadly, I don't think there's any chance of this happening, at least in the U.S. Apparently Atlus Japan had/has a bad habit of losing source code after their projects are completed.

I hated the original Persona myself. It played too clunky and the first person dungeon thing that it used from the standard SMT games is something I absolutely hate.

^^ yeah, there were several cuts

Persona 1 (I still love it) doesn't hold up as well due to the aforementioned clunkiness, but jesus, when it was first released it was absolutely incredible. It was so different than anything else that had been released here in the states previously.

Persona shop music > *

I've only played a bit of Persona 2 but it had nice graphics, good music, the rumor system, deep conversations with the monsters (you can flirt with them and such), and an insane difficulty level requiring a lot of levelling up. I really need to get back into it...

I've thought about buying it but I'm not sure if I can like it. Usually I can't go back in time and enjoy a past 2D hit unless it still holds it own with modern 2D games. I usually can't get into "it was great for its time" titles of yesterday.

Does the art level compare well with current Nippon Ichi titles?

Does the gameplay system equate well with Atelier Iris in terms of playability?

If so.........then I would defintely buy it.

Hard to compare. I personally can't stand the super kawaii look of most NIS games, but love the more realistic art style used in Persona. Art style wise, SMT games kick the crap out of anything Nippon Ichi makes.

Btw, quick question for anyone who's huge into SMT games, like myself: I keeping happening by a copy of "Shin Megami Tensei If..." at my local import store . There could be more to the title, but I can only make out the kanji and for "Shin Megami tensei" and the english "if..." Any idea what game this is? Is it a remake? a side story? A Persona game?

Just to help out anyone curious to find out, it's for PSone, and has a nice big box with 6-8 uniformed high school kids on it.

EDIT: I found an awesome site on the history of the Megaten series. Great fucking read: http://hg101.classicgaming.gamespy.com/megaten/megaten.htm
