Well your avatar is a photo of you. Still easily recognizable if you venture into the "Post pics of yourself" thread every now and then. But yeah, it's pretty much the reason I've only changed mine 3-4 times over the course of the past five years. One of those was a forced change due to the ban on animated avatars.

True, but for the majority of my GAF life I had the pills from Matrix along wth this.

EDIT: Just saw your edit! It's interesting that identity conservation is a key factor in not changing avatars. I wonder how many don't change their avatars for that exact reason.
