Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
Let's see how old is too old for GAF (for games, for games !!)

For me, I am at that point where I have more disposable income than ever before so it's fun to revisit games from my younger, formative, years and try to relive that experience routinely.

Then of course there's my (almost) annual Resident Evil franchise runs which start from 1996. Can't really say I play Genesis / SNES era games that much anymore, maybe something very special like a Crono Trigger once every few years.

Usually, the farther behind i go regularly is the 90s. Can't remember playing anything from the 80s, maybe some NES or Mega Drive stuff.

I've played many consoles...

If you put an Atari game in my hand, I can easily play a more technically advanced game.

The only thing I would never play are mobile or cell phone games. Not even sports games.

No.

Once in a full moon i get in a mood for a retro game but its very rare. I can still play games from last gen, but PS360 gen games, only if its a good game i missed out.

No. I'll play an old game that's been remade with QoL improvements or modern gameplay mechanics/controls, but retro gaming isn't for me. Newer 2D Pixel stuff like Ninja Gaiden Ragebound, Shovel Knight, Dave the Diver, Mina the Hollower, etc are my jam though. I basically like modern games that have the retro look or vibe if that makes sense.

I regularly dive into the retro library, but rarely go back farther than the third generation. I enjoy games with story lines, and before that era these types of games didn't really exist. A few weeks ago, I played (and finished) Frog For Whom the Bell Tolls which was originally released on the Game Boy in Japan.

This thing has been amazing for me. Very portable, plays basically anything retro I throw at it. Wifi works great for earning retro achievements online.

Currently playing this game, and it's an absolute gem

I wish Konami made games like this still.

Man, my retro game collection is sweet. Spread across Xbox and PC. Soon gonna be buying a tonne of NES, snes and other 16 but games when I get round to picking up a switch 2( I want all those hamster and M2 ports)

In the meantime I love that I can play arcade perfect Ports of Daytona USA, VF2, fighting vipers, all my capcom collections. Really takes me back to the 90s.

I still play doom, quake, duke just for that trip down memory Lane, and take a tour of 90s FPS level design ( them maze like maps are a doozy!)

I have some great games in my steam library but I probably play my Darius shmups more than any l thing else on PC.

Picked up ridgeracer along side assault suit leynos 2, and some other shmups earlier on in the week.

Yes, I'm really hardcore into old games.

I have a Nes, PC engine, Snes, Genesis, Saturn, Ps1, Ps2, N64, Consolized MVS, Gamecube, Wii, Og Xbox, Xbox 360, Dreamcast, all hooked up to quality scalers ( Ossc, Retrotink 5X, and currently Retrotink 4k), with rgb mods, plus Portables (GB Color, GBA, DS, PSP).

I also have 3 mister FPGAs, one for my "main" setup, and other 2 hooked up to my two candy cabinets (new astrocity and cyberlead).

I also have tons of flashcarts, ODES, CRTs, PVMs and accesories, I learned how to solder and service those consoles to keep them up and running.

So yeah.. retro games are my jam, and I love it!

I just started playing Super Mario World again. And about a month ago I beat Donkey Kong Country. The SNES was an amazing console. Limited in comparison to modern-day consoles, but with so much character. I will forever cherish the SNES, PS1, and PS2 systems and game libraries. Nothing else comes close for me.

I'm old enough to know that most of the best games of all time came out before the year 2000, so yeah, I tend to enjoy those games more than most of the modern slop that comes out these days. I still play modern games mind you, but I'm often left feeling like just playing MegaMan X, Donkey Kong Country 2, Chrono Trigger, or Third Strike again after playing most modern games....now what does that tell us?

I have everything from an Atari 2600 to ps3/360 hooked up to a sony trinitron. I also have a few of those emulator handhelds. I enjoy jumping in and playing a random game if i dont feel like investing my time in a newer game. It's nice being able to load a game, have no updates, no tutorials, no eula screens. Just load it and play.

Yes, I still play 90s/2000s PC games, especially adventure games and classic shooters, which are the 2 PC classic genres I'm mostly fond of. I already played some of those games in the past, but some are completely new to me. I also play PS1/PS2 games through emus from time to time.

I recently finished The Longest Journey and the Heretic/Hexen series, now playing Shadow Warrior Classic (GOG free version through Raze is just cowabunga!) and now looking forward to play Dreamfall and Phantasmagoria (still have the boxed version with 7 CD).

I play games from around mid 1990s and up. So basically SNES/Megadrive/PC Engine and up, as well as of course actual PC stuff.

I regularly play older games, just as much as newer ones, just depends on how I feel any particular day.

I often find that my definition of "old" has changed. For example I don't consider games released 10 or even 15 years ago particularly old, I just treat them like modern releases that I've just had on my backlog. Unless I have to resort to emulation or connecting something like the PS2 or xbox on the TV, it's not old for me.

Yes, quite regularly.

On consoles, mostly 90s onwards but I won't say no to a NES game if it's cool.

When it comes to PC I think the oldest stuff I've played is Monkey Island. :goog_relieved:

Love replaying classics. Did a few with my partner (Resident Evil series, Gears, Silent Hill 1-4, Dino Crisis 2 with mods) and am currently finishing Wind Waker before going onto Skyward Sword. I was going to do Black Flag but I'm going to wait for the remake.

Having everything pitch perfect really makes these an utter pleasure, appreciating the stuff we have these days.

Love it all.

Yes, especially in these down times of the year. Like currently I love how the new Commandos game this year got me to replay 2 and 3.. well since I've played them back in the day, only ever replayed the first one some years ago.
Then there was anniversary time for both Doom 3 and HL2 last year, as it happens never managed to go for them with other stuff going on, but still very much planned!
And also Prince of Persia trilogy should be on the table as well, though it's really sad how poorly many of the old games hold up when trying to play on a modern system, lots of struggle there.

I didn't answer but I wish the original PAC-MAN was on these consoles. Nothing like just playing a fun yet challenging game without thinking and 4k, VRR, or ray tracing.

Why is there no option for all of them? I like to play games based on fun, and lemme tell ya there are some games made 30 years ago that can blow recent games out of the water.

I'd venture to say that half of my time is spent on older games that have been released on modern platforms. I just find them more enjoyable than modern releases.

I chose no because of irregularity, but that's not to say that I don't dabble with an oldie (ohhh matron!) now and again.

I'm more likely to play a shoot-em-up than any other genre.

Megadrive/SNES/NeoGeo and Arcade games of the same era I still re-play regularly. 2D was at it's peak the the games still look as good as they were back in the day.
PS1-PS3 gen games, mostly 3D, aged much worse imo, though some early 3D games with a good artistic direction have that "90's 3D aesthetic" that I find pleasing.
I find very hard to replay games that look and or sound ugly though, retro gaming is to me much more about an artistic experience than a gameplay experience, baring a few exceptions.

I believe the intent of the poll is to state how far you go back with old games and assumes you play from that point forward.

I wouldn't say "regularly" but maybe one tier below that.

I don't play my PS3/360 anymore or any older system outside of the PSP and that itself is pretty rare. Any old titles I play are generally updated versions on consoles or on Steam.

Just recently I was playing Republic Commando on PS5. A few months back I was playing Quake II also on PS5.

Oh yes. I got as retro as old arcade shoot em up using an arcade stick. There is something very tactile about it you can't find elsewhere. Also the sound design games used to have and creativity is something that will never get old.

Back when gaming weren't creatively bankrupt and genre standardized as much as today.

I've really been enjoying Quake and Turok recently and I've always loved Duke Nukem 3D (I really wish we could get a quality Duke Nukem remastered games pack and get all of them remastered and with modern controls).

So I'd say I do like playing older games but with the caveat it's likely to be only certain genres - racing games tend to not hold up as well in my opinion.

I'm old enough to have played them back in their respective eras, so no. The only thing I sometimes play is the arcade machine I bought only because it was a childhood dream.

Mid 80s-early 90s.

I play Amiga games and 80s arcade games regularly. Have an Amiga 1200 plugged into the same screen as my main PC. And a Raspberry Pi arcade and also the full-size TheC64 in the living room. Lots of nostalgia but I really like the simplicity in game design from that era.

For console I used to play Super Metroid through retroarch on Series X. But it got wiped. And I used to play lots of NES, SNES, Megadrive games during the Wii era, Virtual Console was fantastic. But it got wiped when going into the Switch era.

Used to have a Retropie when Raspberry Pi 2 was new but nothing right now.

Should setup a retroarch monster on the living room PC but haven't had the energy to do it yet.

3D retro though? Nah. Nothing holds up imo.
