No, not regularly, but then again, I also don't play modern games regularly.

I will, however, say that old games for me aren't thing of the past, or something I moved on from.

Yes. I'll play anything and everything if it feels like it held up. I do struggle with most pre-16bit era stuff though quite often. As in, I remember loving it, go back to it and think yea, this is too archaic for me at this stage.

Of course there are timless games like NES Marios and so on that still play like solid gold. Just recently I realized I only enjoy my memories of Ghouls N Ghosts games for example though. I grew up with all of it but back then I played the same opening stages for 15 minutes at a time before going outside to play and I was thoroughly amazed.

I play anything from the NES era to current day.
Atari freaks me out for some reason.

I mix old with new. Just taking 2025 as an example:

Romancing SaGa 3
The Dark Eye: Chains of Satinav
Heroes of Might and Magic IV
Prince of Qin
Capitalism 2
Legacy of Kain: Defiance
Deus Ex: Invisible War
Blood Omen 2: Legacy of Kain
Velvet Assassin
Gemini Rue
Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age (Hey, eight years is a long time!)
Seal of Evil

Other than being good games (or maybe it's rose tinted glasses and nostalgia), one thing is absolutely underestimated in older games. Silence. The blissful silence of your character while you explore. Nothing like the yapping main heroes of nu-games. (And no, I don't dislike new games.)

Hell yeah... on that electro-mechanical buzz lately.

PAC man and space invaders will still get playtime from me. But yeah playing quake and quake 2 and the classic doom games is a great time.
SF2 anyone ?

I play old games all the time. Everything from the 70's forward. Been playing quite a bit of Arcade Archives Qix the last couple of weeks. And Arcade Archives 2 Ridge Racer via PS Portal. So glad that released on PlayStation.

My modded Wii U and PS3 stay hooked up to the main gaming TV. So many great experiences that I missed out on over the years that I can now comb through. With the ability of the Wii U to play Wii and GameCube games (with decent scaling), it's the best Nintendo console to own in modern times.

I regularly go back and play my favourite PS1 games: Resident Evil 1-3, FF7-9, Silent Hill, Parasite Eve 2, Alundra, etc. I also play games from the PS1 and PS2 era that I missed out on due to playing other games or because they weren't released in the U.K.

I'm still playing Commodore 64 stuff. Admittedly not as often as I play Amiga stuff.

Not long sold an Amiga 1200 mind you. Cannot find a decent CRT so it had to go. Just the A500s left now.

I love old games and I'm very attached to them even if I don't spend a huge amount of time playing them anymore. I still launch them regularly just for a quick fix or palate cleanser.

But one of their strengths was their non-committal nature. I can beat the first level of an old game in less time than new loading and splash screens. Firing up an old game isn't really a "decision".

I would like to, trying to buy a SupaBoy to play my SNES cartridges on the go. I'm slowly playing old console RPGs I could never play, even if it's in a modern system (like the Switch emulator). I got friends who collect old 80s and 90s stuff who love playing those systems but I don't even have a CRT to run my SNES nowadays though I'm literally tempted daily to buy one. Just a few days ago I saw Mado Monogatari in the US Switch store and now I want to play it in the system lol

No. I played those games when they were current and loved them but frankly they're not very good. At least if you're a gameplay first guy like me.

Ocarina of time is one of the best games ever made, but it's for it's time. It has things that would still be good today for sure but the combat is ass for my standards today. Not that it's overly terrible, there are modern beloved games with worse combat like skyrim but it's not like i would play that either.

Doom is one of the most important games in history but if it would release today, it wouldnt even be a top tier indie fps game. And if i play something now, i wanna have fun now, and not marvel about how great it was 25 years ago. So to me there is really no point in playing it now when i can buy an indie game that is simply better in every way.

I can't stand N64/PS1 style games, they have aged horribly. PS2.. Rather not. PS3.. Yeah I could, but never do.

Anything 8-bit or 16-bit is lovely though, I play them regularly on CRT. Like fine wine.

Yup I probably play more retro than current gen games

Red alert 2/yuris revenge
C&c generals
Quake 3
Unreal tournament
Serious sam

Sega Saturn
Dreamcast
Model 2/3 arcade games

Still love playing shenmue and Xmas nights around the festive season

Sonic 2 is like my safe space gaming wise I find myself playing it more than o should.

I need trophies or achievements to validate the experience so I only go back to PS3 or Xbox 360, or remasters. Looking back, before I got into 100'ing games, playing games on a whim however I wanted, whenever I wanted, was really boring. I care about trophies more than my SAT scores, GRE score, salary, alma mater, penis size, or car I drive.

Totally, they're the best. 90s Arcade/Neo Geo and SNES and Genesis stuff too.

Oldie PC games too, from System Shock 2 to Morrowind to Quake to Return Castle Wolfenstein to Thief 2 to MechWarrior 4: Mercenaries to Freespace 2 etc., I guess GameCube and Wii games count too nowadays, or later PC stuff like Hitman: Blood Money /old.

Out of curiosity, I looked through the last 10 games (accomplished):
  1. Valfaris
  2. Hydro Thunder Hurricane
  3. PES 21
  4. Blasphemous
  5. Axiom Verge
  6. Resident Evil Code Veronica X
  7. Momodora
  8. The Fall
  9. Flashback
  10. Guns, Gore and Canolli.
A good mix of classic and 2d games. Excellent taste!

For sure.

Probably 50% of my gaming is SNES/PS1/N64/GC/PS2/Xbox.

Never much desire to play stuff before that or in the generation after though.

Yes but not very frequently, maybe 2 or 3 times a year.
The game I revisit most frequently are Ps3/360 era games because I think they hold up incredibly well on PC at higher resolutions and framerate. Stuff like Vanquish, Binary Domain or Metal Gear rising are all great.
For older gens I mostly like to back to RPGs (stuff like Chrono Trigger, FFIV-XII, SMT3, etc) or action games like DMC and Ninja Gaiden Black, old God of War, etc.

I think I play more classics these days than modern games.

Just started a new campaign of Duke Nukem 3D on the PS5. It's still a glorious game.

xbox360 have been (i still have it btw) my last game machine as console, i think i have played and completed a good 70% of its catalogue

after that, bread, retrogaming and PC indie games mostly
retro until 8 bit computers and console like C64, Master System...

my face before installing a new game on PC to test :messenger_neutral:

my face after removing the same game after a while :messenger_neutral:

i think Dead Cells is the last game i have really liked a lot

Yep i do, like you OP i mostly play 5th gen onwards using emulators on PC. Recently finished BLACK, Killzone and Darkwatch on PCSX2 with widescreen and 60 FPS patches, pretty good experience except Killzone keept randomly freezing, should have played the RPCS3 version, i tested it later and run amazingly.
When i play older 4th and 3th gen titles i do so on my RetroPie mostly.

playing some older titles makes me angry about the state of game design in the current era.

like... after playing through Deus Ex on the Steam Deck just recently... I am just stunned at how far the AAA gaming industry has fallen since.
the dumbification of videogames is just sad.

I think this year so far it's been a 50-50 split between new and old games. I will admit I'm a lazy prick, so I'll either use my A500 Mini for quick emulation or rely on the fact that many old games are available for modern consoles, either as standalone or as part of some collections.

My favorites are the PS3/360 generation and the Amiga games - countless great titles to choose from.

Let's see how old is too old for GAF (for games, for games !!)

For me, I am at that point where I have more disposable income than ever before so it's fun to revisit games from my younger, formative, years and try to relive that experience routinely.

Then of course there's my (almost) annual Resident Evil franchise runs which start from 1996. Can't really say I play Genesis / SNES era games that much anymore, maybe something very special like a Crono Trigger once every few years.
Appy, are you playing these games on original hardware?
