Do you remember Final Fantasy VIII?

Rest

All these years later I still chuckle at what a fucking moron that guy is.
Everybody POLKA!

I do remember. It features some of Nobuo Uematsu's best work imo.

I enjoyed FFVIII, even depsite its design flaws. I still have fond memories of playing it in my early teens.
Pretty much enjoyed every PS1 era Final Fanatsy, including FF Tactics. PS1 era Squaresoft really was a force of nature.

What a difficult act to follow after 7.
I wasnt in love with the music, nor the protagonist. I think they tried too hard to think out of the FF box by using different formulas. A gunsword? Squall?
Then 9 came back to being final fantasy again...9 was my favorite because it was so cliche Final Fantasy.
X and X-2, the hippie beach-dodgeball-water polo story was redeemed by it's story and it was fun to play, but 8 just never clicked.
Lost Odyssey to me was the last real "Final Fantasy" game for me, it even had fan service/ode to past FF series.

My first and still my favorite after playing I, IV, V, VI, VII, IX, X, XII, and XIV. Incredibly flawed game with poorly implemented mechanics & sappy, often confusing, writing but its unlike any jrpg you will ever play. There is truly no game like FFVIII. It also has one of the most powerful soundtracks in the medium.

Probably the one of the greatest mini-games of all time.

Yes it was my favorite game of all time before 2020. It is such a cool game and I still have no idea why some lost souls out there dislike Final Fantasy 8. They love 7 and 9, but they hate 8? Did they roll a dice and thought it would be swell to randomly hate on a game?

All of the PS1 Final Fantasy games (and obviously some before that and at least X after) are the golden era of Final Fantasy.

The plot goes really off the rails by disc 3; it has a weird leveling system with a cliched but endearing love story and it’s perhaps Uematsu’s best work ever.

Wrong section?
In any case, worst FF ever. After FF13 of course.

Things that doesn't work on FF8:

-leveling: useless since enemies are always at your level;
-gills replaced by a wage;
-neverending summons' sequences;
-Selphie;
-bad balance between weapons and magics, especially in the first half of the game;
-Junction system very difficult to master and poor results in any case;
-Characters' stories reduced to a single story;
-Selphie;
-Main villain out of nowhere;
-"firaga" in place of "fire", it sounds like a curse word;
-too linear for most of the game;
-and Selphie.

I just remembered the most successful way to play the game is to card everything.

The most experimental FF game for sure.

More precisely refinement and card mod. The actual card ability to turn enemies into cards is very nice but you can break the game a thousand ways outside of it heh

Music is 10/10
Characters and story 7/10
Gameplay and systems 7/10

But overall, it's still a Final Fantasy from the PS1 era, and I love the atmosphere.

You forgot to mention gunblade not to mention six or seven mentions of Squall.

I played it when it came out and liked it enough.
I read a review of the game shortly before buying it that said the PAL version was significantly easier than the JAP version, which did make beating it less satisfying.

I remember the card game, watching my friend play the import(this made going through the domestic release 1st disk quick) i remember getting all the hard summons and only forgetting the easiest at the beginning.

I thought Junction system worked really we.
Firaga is a standard for Fire 3. Not sure what the problem is.
What’s the problem with the wage?
And the enemies never levelled proportionately to your level so in the end you’re still mopping the floor with common enemies.
Story is a bit farfetched but like most FF games I get so lost in sidequests that I forget what the main story is.
