Do you self insert in character creators?

How do you customize your main character?

Sometimes, generally only for games like fallout where I'd want to experience the world as if I was living there, otherwise I just create a sexy girl obviously.

No. And I spend about a minute in them tops because I get impatient, don't give a shit as long as it's not distracting and eventually just smash OK. They're always covered up in armor anyway.

I just decide if I want to play as a male or female for the game, and then change the hair. That's about it. Unless there's a boob slider, that's going all the way up.

It depends. In some I've self-inserted. In others I just attempt to make the coolest "I've seen a lot of shit" kind of character that fits the vibe of the game's universe.

Sometimes character creators don't have great bald and/or beard options, in that case I just make someone random but cool or use a preset. My Xenoblade Chronicles X character looks like Keanu Reeves.

Depends on the game.
Outerwords 2 let me be a total over the top Zapp Brannigan with cheesy dialog.
Avowed I played wishy washy diplomat trying to make everyone happy.

Usually I use the default when possible, like in Mass Effect, but in other games with no lead / main character (like an MMO), I usually make a character based on an old friend as a small dumb tribute to her.

Otherwise, I am not that bothered about what character I am controlling unless they make a negative impact and effect the game. (Not including characters being made to have hand holding dialogue throughout the whole damn game like Aloy or Artreus as examples, though they can be disliked for other reasons)

Random for sure. Some games I go for ugly but I usually try to stay in the realm of a realistic look. Sometimes default works best, especially if I take too long with the creator

I used to when I was young, but now I tend to make lore friendly characters for whatever game I'm playing. Someone who more or less fits into that specific game world and I kind of create a mini back story for them in my head.

Edit.
The only exception to this is games where I'm given the opportunity to crush or fight against Islamists/terrorists in which case I always create a holy crusader (regardless of timeline) so I can bring down righteous judgement on them.

I always try to create my character like Geralt if i want a melee build or Legolas if i want a bow build. Dont really play magic builds.

When I was younger I used to as well, nowadays I do the exact opposite and I always play a hot woman lmao which is as far from myself as you can get preferably with more feminine attire too ( women in heels kicking ass is hot as hell ).
I dunno but games are escapism and fantasy I kinda just find it really boring to play someone more like myself.
Playing a woman like in Korean MMO's kicking ass is just a million times more fun and exciting to me than playing a burly man, the absurdity is part of the fun.

I don't really like pseudo '' realistic '' games either tho it happens that I play them sometimes but it's very very rare.
The more over the top and nonsensical the better.
I actually tried playing as a self insert in BG3 once but lost interest very quickly I dunno when this changed probably around my early to mid twenties.

I have one character look and name that I always try to make, and I try to role play that it's the same guy from all the other games and he's some kind of planeswalker who keeps getting thrust into crazy situations.

Most games I play that has characters creators are usually cRPGs. And seeing as I enjoy trying different builds and archetypes I usually create characters and lean into choices that reflect the build I'm going for.

But with that said, I've never once created a female MC. Make of that what you will. 😁

I hate the notion of pretending to "be" that person.

In 3rd person games -- which are the only ones where you really even see the character -- that person is an action figure toy, a plaything you're manipulating by hidden strings. I don't feel that they're "me" in any way, nor would I ever want to. The whole obsession with character creators that give "representation" to every kind of person or body is retarded from the start.

And as others said: if it's a camera angle showing ass, I'll make that a hot female action figure every time.

Random, because in most of these RPGs you're covered up by armor 90% of the time anyway

Otherwise, sometimes I'll role play a specific play style and make a character to match that. I never make it look like me.

Generally I just try to make the character look reasonably like me (which is usually pretty easy) but ya know, younger and in better shape cause I'm playing a game.

One exception was Xenoblade Chronicles X, I thought the male characters all looked a bit weird with that "doll-eye" aesthetic it has going on so I played as a female character.
