EDIT: Edited the shit looking ones out.
EDIT2: The left part of each shot is with an effect disabled, the right one with an effect enabled.

...

They feel that the next step is to improve the cinematic experience in Day of Defeat: Source with effects such as Depth Of Field, Motion Blur, Film Grain, Dust, and Colour Correction. Over the next few pages, we'll be covering these new technologies and how Valve intends to integrate them into Day of Defeat: Source to make it even more cinematic than it already is.

With the exception of Colour Correction, all of these film effects essentially reduce the fidelity of the image, but the human eye perceives a much more complex scene. It could also be said that some of these technologies aren't going to be easy to implement into the classic WWII multiplayer, but it should serve you with some tidbits of graphical goodness that we're expecting to feature in Valve's future titles

Trailer: http://www.filerush.com/download.php?target=dodt_tech_videos.zip

I'd love to see all this stuff in HL3.

Im kind of confused by the double posting of some pictures and the differences between them. Is it supposed to be a bunch of comparison shots, or is it all from this new version?

The problem with this stuff, shell shock effects and depth of field, is it's all optional... much like the HDR initially shipped in DoD.

It looks great, but it impairs your ability to play. You turn it on, and you're at a disadvantage. This is fine for single-player games, but why would anyone want to give themselves a disadvantage in a multiplayer game (HDR blinds you, new shell shock makes it harder to see, etc)?

Make this stuff mandatory for all people, or even have servers where it's mandatory, and it'll be sweet.

All are new.

It's just that some show one effect while the others other.

The bottom ones are binary AND operation :) with both effects on.

Damn it, the video download is torrent only. :/

Anyway, I think this looks and sounds awesome, but if they let people turn it off then it's pointless.

Oh well, I'll have it on for a while if only to look at the pretty graphics.

Alright, motion blur has to be the best CG effect incorporated into gaming since texture filtering.

Simply awesome. I don't think I'll be able to play PC games without MB after playing some titles with MB in full effect.

Sorry to say this but this actually looks better than some 360 Games i've seen....
:lol
....it had to be said but really...its the truth
but imagine what Call of Duty 2 would have...could have and should have looked like
The effects are what im looking forward too the most for next gen..
Lol, but this is current gen...gosh :D

What do you mean by "current gen"? This is a PC game, and this is their latest tech update. I don't understand how "generation" even applies to PC gaming.

"Generation" can translate to every two iterations of a graphics card-

Voodoo 1 Voodoo 2 - Gen 1
Voodoo 3 Voodoo 4 / TNT 1 TNT 2 - Gen 2
Geforce 1 Geforce 2 - Gen 3
Geforce 4 Geforce 5 - Gen 4
Geforce 6 Geforce 7 - Gen 5

etc.

Sorry, I should have made myself clear. I'm talking about generation in terms of console generations, and I assume the guy I quoted was too. It doesn't make any sense to suggest that DOD:S would be part of "this gen", if "this gen" refers to the current generation of consoles.

There's no such term as "generations" in PC gaming.

It was coined for the console market and it should stay there.

If you are really, I mean really anal you could apply the term "generation" to CPU families - 486, Pentium, Pentium II etc. or GFX cards or DirectX versions but how the hell it's a generation when same games work on machines ranging from Pentium to Pentium 4?

Half-Life 2 runs on latest $3000 HW and at the same time it runs on some ancient 1998 tech.

Generations in PC gaming my ass. Stop with this nonsense naming convention.

Now in console space it makes much more sense - try running your PD:0 copy in PSX. Can't do. You need the latest generation of consoles to play this game.

Looks amazing, I'd buy it if I thought my card (9700 Pro) would run it well with these on!

Motion blur is stunning, it adds a real sense of depth and "reality" to games like PDZ.

For the record, I pulled that graphics card/generation list out of my ass.

F@ckin WICKED!

DoD: S is my most played game at the moment.
I love this game.
Best FPS Multiplayer game out there right now, if you're a rushing/frag whore.

Though, I never see any GAF people playing.

I meant generation in terms of graphics....
Like as in periods...
the timeframe in which the game came out
the source engine is over a year old...and just by adding these effects it looks better than some xbox 360 games and thats amazing

I was also wrong to say "Current" gen as the Xbox 360 is already here which would make "next gen" here so it is now current gen...

but i was saying..a game that is running on an engine that is a year old (and it looks just like hl2 except with a few improvements...so dont say DoD:S didnt come out a year ago...it looks no better than HL2 if you subtract HDR) is able to look better than 360 games...

For fuck's sake, how about they focus on something that matters, like the gameplay instead of yet another appeal to graphics whores. I don't need motion blur or film grain effects, I need a better balanced game with more content.

There's only five official maps, one decent custom map made by on the dev team, and a whole whack of craptastic user made content. I'm sure a few Wehrmacht armchair generals could argue there's more than one decent custom but fuck them. Shit like Verdun is not fun.

The scrubified weapon balance and classes present in Source have got to go. No more bullshit parallel classes, no more punishment free melee attacks for smg's, no more bloody iron sights. Give me 1.3's weapon balance. Uncripple the rifle classes by giving them back their pistols and secondary melee attacks. Give heavies pistols again, there's no fucking reason they shouldn't have secondaries to save their asses in a pinch. I shouldn't have to pick the Allied Rocket class just to use a Carbine. Give me the 1.3 weapon balance and diversity, which while far from perfect is better than what's presently in the game.

Fuck motion blur and any other superfluous effects, fix the god damned gameplay, and give me more content. Where's Kalt? Zalec? Saints? Meredet? Hell, I'd take dod_switch and it's bottle neck MG/nade spamfests at this point in time.

I saw this in Valve's office. :D

The big thing about it is how they're integrating that into the Source SDK--kinda like photoshop.

That's not necessarily true as DirectX is quantal; and there are important subdivisions within this structure which pertain to processing capability (eg. SM1, SM2, SM3). Now an architecture isn't statically tied to each division, as you can have something like G70 which is a '2nd generation SM3 architecture' after NV40; but the statement that there aren't important processing divisions in PC gaming is somewhat fallicious.

Your PC is last generation once you can't run a sampling of recent games with at least a majority of the current effects, an average resolution for the time, and at a framerate around 30.

Film grain, depth of field, motion blur... All this stuff is really stupid to be adding into a game when you're trying to go for realism. This stuff doesn't occur in real life. It only happens in movies, and for artistic style. When I'm playing a first person shooter, it's supposed to be like you are playing a character, not watching a movie.

Depth of Field (focus) and Motion Blur DO occur in real life, although not as exaggerated as this obviously.
Thereby, who said they're trying to 'copy' real life? I like the movie-like effects pretty much :)

Hmm, see, I think about this differently...

They could not POSSIBLY achieve realism just yet, so rather than attempt to emulate the human eye, they should shoot for something closer to a film. Cinematic effects look awesome in motion and often manage to obscure certain things just enough to make them seem a bit more realistic.

Yes, but it's a first-person shooter, where your perspective is that of the character you are portraying in the game. Anything that looks artificial on top of the limited (compared to reality) game engine takes me further out of the experience.

I agree that the effects look awesome, but it feels to me that you are watching something rather than experiencing it.

And? You're viewing the game through the eyes of a soldier...through a screen.

Lack of such effects takes me out of the experience, as our eyes also do not see things in the way a game without such effects would display things.

Eh, opinions everywhere. I LOVE cinematic effects. Screw "reality". Half-Life 2 looks NOTHING like reality...so I'd rather have them go for a "CG-ish" look instead. We're a LONG way from worrying about something like this when there are so many other severe issues preventing things from appearing realistic.

Instead of the film grain they should be going for the effect of dust filling the air that permeates any dry battlefield.

So... There needs to be more work done on realistic texturing, modeling, lighting, and color temperatures :)

Also, these effects are going to severely drop the framerate down, and remember, framerate is king ;)

Regardless of how you feel about the effects, you have to admit that the full movie is awesome. Too bad my computer sucks and can barely run the game at lowest settings as it is.

Well of course they look interesting when you are watching the trailer, but that's about as far as that goes ;)

I do admit that I think a slight bit of motion blur would enhance the experience; like when you see concussion blurring when an artillery shell hits nearby, or something similar.
