Does anyone actually use a laptop anymore?

I find it crazy that I haven't used my laptop at all in years. In the mid to late 2000s, and probably even a bit later, it felt like everyone I knew had laptops and used them frequently. That obviously started declining with tablets / ipads and just smartphones in general. And a lot of people use desktop PCs for gaming etc.

So does anyone still use a laptop regularly, or has it been sat in a cupboard somewhere gathering dust?

Uhh, laptops are arguably more popular than ever. They've largely completely replaced desktops for the average user, particularly in the workplace.

I couldnt work or even live without a laptop. I don't understand how you guys prefer a tiny screen instead of a laptop screen, let alone how comfy it is to type on a keyboard. The only advantage is touch screen, everything else is worse.

I haven't had a desktop in 15 years, 90% of my web browsing and email is on my phone, small screen streaming is on my tablet, large screen streaming and gaming is on my xbox. On those occasions that I need to type a lot I use a cheap 3050 laptop that I got a few years ago.

Yes. I have two.

One for work and another for family use (retro gaming, writing, coding etc)

Yeah flex/home office and mobility made laptops the default work computers. Now that they have enough power and battery life to handle most tasks including technical ones, there's no reason to use a desktop unless you have very specific computational or data requirements.

Only for work because it was issued.

If I'm at home, I use a desktop gaming PC.

If I'm out and about and need email/internet access I've got my phone.

If I want to game on a trip, I use a Steam Deck.

No need for a lappy.

Of course.

1. I find chilling on my laptop more relaxing than using my phone.
2. I'm a stock market trader and if I were to do it on a smartphone instead of my laptop it would put me at a massive disadvantage.

Pre-covid, my customer base would buy a 60/40 split in favor of desktops for persona computing. I'd be surprised if 10% of my sales were desktops these days.

In my case it's a Lenovo Thinkpad 14" laptop used as main computer. Big enough to use comfortably, but small enough to not be burdensome whilst moving around.

I also recently found OneCommander which enables MacOS style explorer, which has been one of the biggest disappointments with windows. It's so much more efficient to show folders like this:

You get a nice overlook over several pages and the condensed final window is often more than enough to show me the info I need. Bonus window in the end to show what's in a file. The dudes designing MacOS(and OneCommander) sure knew what they were doing.

Yes. At work I'm still using a moderately old Windows laptop, and if I have to do productivity stuff at home or elsewhere, I need a keyboard and a reasonably-sized screen, so I have a MB Air. My iPad is for browsing and video watching.

I still use my Dell 7559 from 2016, but only like 2-3 times a year when I'm traveling.

Otherwise, I'm using my desktop with an ultrawide monitor or my phone.

The laptop has held up surprisingly well. i7 CPU, 970 GPU, 16 GB RAM, and a 500 GB SSD. Also has a 1080p 100hz screen, which is nice for how old it is. It can handle Dark Souls 1-2 so that's usually what I play on it if I want to game a bit while traveling, but that's rare.

At this point I'm just curious as to how long it will actually last.

I'm constantly using one of my laptops. I usually do casual stuff like forums or YouTube on my tablet, but I do productive work and learning on my MacBook Pro or when of my Windows laptops pretty much daily.

European here if that matters but i dont know a single person who uses a tablet. Phones sure. The only tablets i see have a rubber casing and are being handled by children. Not hating on tablets or anything, but that is legit the only times i see tablets being used.

I have a couple of 14" Lenovo thinkpads and I love them. One is efficient, the other has grunt and only lasts about 30 minutes on battery power if I don't turn on battery saver. I also have an I9 Lenovo mobile workstation that's a beast.

My phone has become my computer, but I got this nice Asus gaming laptop and just haven't really used it much. Partly because my Steam Deck is good enough for gaming and the form factor is much better. I installed Linux on the laptop and that has made it a bit more appealing to use now.

A windows like environment is convenient for work though. No doubt. I just hate what Windows has become. It's just a ridiculous spying OS, same with Android, but I've been working on removing myself from these ecosystems. In the age of AI I think it's more important than ever to get away from Google, Microsoft, Apple, and even Meta. It's just insane what these companies get away with.

Linux Laptop for work, Windows Desktop for gaming (that I would immediately get rid of if I didn't need for gaming). Tablets are for movie watching in bed and don't have much else utility for me.
