Does anyone have sale numbers for MGS3 in NA?

psycho_snake

I went to WAGs boutique and all I got was a sniff
I never saw the sale numbers for MGS3 in NA. In Japan, it seems to be doing great, so that could only mean its doing better in the USA. Ive been very curious to see if this game does better saleswise than MGS2. MGS3 is the better game (by a big margain and MGS2 was my favourite game this gen) but it was never hyped as much. I'm guessing they came with November NPD, but I only saw hardware sale numbers.

Its late at night and Im sleepy, I must be seeing this wrong. 290K,what the f**k is wrong with you americans. This is the best game this generation.

What were the sales of MGS3 in japan then, just to make sure

America has a serious case of GTA-itis.

If Kojima could put more hookers and gangs in MGS, he'd have a bigger seller on his hands.

Anyone have LTD numbers for all the MGS games in America?

-Metal Gear Solid (PS)
-Metal Gear Solid: VR Missions (PS)
-Metal Gear Solid (GBC)
-Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (PS2)
-Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance (Xbox)
-Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance (PS2)
-Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes (GC)

I did my part, bought a copy on the day of release. 290k just isn't enough for a game of that quality, tsk tsk.

I agree. It hurts to see a game so well made sell like this. IMO, MGS3 is 100 times better than GTA: SA. Those GTA numbers should belong to MGS3.

How much did MGS2 debut at back in 2001?
I don't know. All I know is that MGS2 sold just about 5 million copies worldwide. MGS2 deserved those sales since it was such a magnificent game, but MGS3 just blew it away.

It's all about content.

GTA: San Andreas glorifies the hip-hop "gang-banger" culture that is so popular in America right now. It's chaotic violence for certain, versus Snake Eater's stealthy approach.

While waiting for those overall MGS numbers to come in, I'd venture to guess that the GTA franchise has easily eclipsed MGS in terms of popularity here in the US.

Unfortunately for us, Snake is a has-been.

If Konami Europe will give it the same importance like PES4 and come out with a good ad campaign it should have more success over here. Because MGS2 had a bigger impact over here than anywhere else. I also smell a bundle, it's SCEE's tradition to make bundles with big third party games (there was a really successful Sons of Liberty bundle).
Also, european boxart?

It wasn't there 2 days ago, that's for sure. The Net Features bar makes it ugly.

That boxart isnt very good. I think the boxart should be a drawing of Big Boss and The boss on the cover. The Boss>everyone

Im sure mgs3 will do better in December and it will at least get over 1 million. The game is getting good word of mouth and is finally getting some airtime on TV. Im guessing it will end up selling around 1.5 million in the US.

Very nice boxart. I like that more than the NA boxart.

Lets hope the December numbers are a lot better . With all of the postitive reactions to the game at many places around the net, will in the very least, increase the numbers in some manner .

Here's hoping for 800k in December !

BTW, What was the Budget for this game including marketing, anyone know ? In the end if they don't break even, that might not bode well for the next installment ?

I think I'd had enough when a double agent named Eva came barreling into an enemy camp to help me dispatch some evil Russians. She kicked butt, and then stripped down to a bikini top, right there in the jungle. Snake, of course, paused to take in the view. A punch of a button even provided a close-up.

If I wasn't supposed to be quiet, I would have screamed.

Pansy. You're supposed to to enjoy it, not scream like you're in the second grade and she's got the cooties.

Off the top of my head:

MGS did 2.45m
MGS2 did 2.01m

(in the USA)

And the 800k / 450k number has come from me and some estimating based on the monthly top 20 charts / end of year numbers etc. It did 1.25m in 2001, less than Halo did in Dec (Halo did something like 350k Nov, 460k Dec back in 2001). SSBM did 648k in Dec. GTA3 is the killer tho, something like 290k Oct, 650k Nov and 1.1m Dec. FFX did 800k in Dec 2001 as well.

Your numbers could be off by quite a bit.

According to NPD Funworld, GTA3 beats out SSBM for top spot in December.

For the month of December, GTA3 sold more than 50,000 copies more than it's closest competitor Super Smash Brothers for the GCN. The controversial game has been pulled off the shelves of Wal-Mart and Target due to its graphic portrayals of violence and sex. Apparently this has not reduced gamer demand for the title.

I regret what I said earlier in this thread.

Father, forgive me. I tried not to do it.
Turned over a new leaf...then blew right through it.

The mullet is what's holding MGS3 back. Americans outside of places like kentucky and tennessee just don't relate as much as they do to OG hoodie bangers dawg :lol. Yes that was my poor attempt at being street.

I've been spreading the word. I got a friend to take up the entire MGS series. I'm gonna borrow him MGS1 and 2 probably and I told him to get 3 for x-mas which he is. And of course I bought my copy the first day available. This game should get MGS1 like word of mouth. I also convinced the lunch table that slicing a guy up with a fork is more bad ass than anything CJ's done in SA. Then we all agreed the only thing more bad ass would be killing a guy with a spork

Never got around to buying it. The series just isn't on my must buy radar like it use to be.
I'll get it eventually. Probably when its cheap.

Well, that's sad. As said, this is the best game this generation. MGS2's Raiden was just a trip up. The gameplay as well as the story itself is the series best imo.

That's a large part of it, alot of people were pissed off to no end after MGS2 between being forced to play as raiden and the fact that you watched more than you played. I was overjoyed when i heard MGS3 had over 25+ hours of actual gameplay, i wasn't going to buy it until i heard that and i've actually played all the games heh. Don't get me wrong i enjoyed MGS2 but i'd say if had about 10 hours of actual gameplay and that's seriously pushing it.

Brosh,

Here's the full Dec chart (NPD was doing weekly's at the time, so I don't know what that PR was referring to. I think it was merely sales up to the next to last week of Dec 2001

http://www.npd.com/corp/content/ie/videogames/c_vg0112.htm

and here's the folder with Top 20 NPD from 1999-2002

Yeah, that's more like it. That's the December chart I've got. I'll run through what I know for definite and you can draw your own conclusions. These are definite numbers I've found, not estimates or off the top of my head this time:

Nintendo released a press release around that time saying that according to NPD, Nintendo games in 2001 had sold:

Edit- yes!! found the article... http://www.gamespot.com/news/2002/02/13/news_2847671.html
At the Toy Fair in New York, Nintendo held a press conference to discuss the record growth that the video game industry has seen in 2001 and how Nintendo products have been a part of that growth. 2.7 million GameCube units have been shipped worldwide, with 1.25 million units sold in North America and 1.3 million units sold in Japan. The Game Boy Advance has done incredibly well for the company, selling 4.7 million units. According to Nintendo, software sales in 2001 were also solid, with Super Smash Bros. selling 643,996 units, followed by Luigi's Mansion, Star Wars, Pikmin, and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3. Unsurprisingly, Pokémon Crystal led the way in handheld sales with 1,400,422. Super Mario Advance trailed behind with 1,227,442 units sold, followed by Pokémon Silver, Pokémon Gold, and Mario Kart Super Circuit.

Pokemon Crystal 1.40m
Super Mario Advance 1.23m
Smash Bros Melee 644k (Released in Dec)

Edit 2: Or better still:

So MGS2 must have sold more than 447k in Nov and less than 644k in Dec, and sold 1.23-1.40m total in 2001 (although working back from an NPD spreadsheet I have for Mar 2002, somewhere around 1.25m would be right- it had only done 1.42m upto end of Mar 2002).

How you wanna break that down is upto you. I thought that 800k / 450k seemed about right, but I guess someone could equally argue 610k/640k could have been possible, 750k / 500k, 700k / 550k- who knows for definite. I biased it more towards Nov because I remember reports goin out very early in Dec saying that MGS2 had sailed past a million, and also it would have posted a low number for Jan - about 80k - suggesting it had dropped off pretty quick from initial release...
