Is there anyone here old enough to remember the great games by Strategic Simulation ld Incorporated also known simply as SSI?

One of my first computer role-playing games was Phantasie and I was able to get all three of them for my Commodore 64.

I used to have a nice color catalog of all their different role-playing and strategic games.

Their games were pretty low budget. They definitely did not focus on graphics but more on gameplay even for that time.

I'm glad to see that GOG has a few of the games available now so people who remember or missed out can play them again.

I've actually played a good amount of Panzer General over the years. It's pretty fun and I'm not interested in wwii at all.

The only one I can remember playing was Menzobaranzan (sp).
It played single digit frames on an old computer but I finished it.

First goldbox game was Secret of the Silver Blades on my C64. After that, the Dragonlance trilogy. Dark Queen of Krynn was my favorite.

That was one of the few games I owned on the Commodore 64. I was so excited to see it re-released on GOG. I (re) bought it right away.

Edit: oh for a second there I thought you were posting a picture of Demon's Winter.

The gold box editions in 1988-1991 on C64 were pretty awesome, Pool of Radiance was en eye opener when it released. The Buck Rogers RPG games were good too! Some really good Amiga versions too, especially Eye of the Beholder 2.

One interesting thing about the SSI Gold Box games, you really had to buy the games for the journals, conversations and game documenation, getting a copy on tthe play ground didn't cut. USe to look great on the shelf too.

The disk swapping was a pain ass, the games were huge with so many disks and sides. With some fiddling you could get them to work on 1581 drives.

Never played the gold box RPGs myself, but my bro tried them. I dont think he got far, but I remember they were hard as hell. I know he had Curse of Azure Bonds and it seemed hard as hell as the started you off right away at higher level characters I think. He gave up. Over the years he instead focused on Eye of Beholder and M&M and Wiz games.
