Does any company make machines like the old VAIO U's but with modern performance levels? Or is anyone planning on making a series of machines with the same or similar form factor with descent performance and acceptable upper memory limits soon?

Ahh, the good old school VAIO U series. Not the new VAIO Us without the connected keyboard and the touch screen but the cute yet powerful little machines that looked like this:

Sony could make my happy by updating this great design...

I believe sony has deemed them obsolete. The new U series are sony's new concept on potable PC's trying to make a PDA hybrid with all the fuctionality of a PC.

Son'ys line of picturebooks would come closest to your needs, looks much better than the old u series IMO. I had one 3-4 years agoIt has a crusoe prossessor, 128 mb ram,a 20 gig hard drive, and a camera attached to it. It's still a very servicable computer as you can do most apps on it today. I'm pretty sure it's weaker than the old u series though.

I have an old Fujitsu Lifebook that has the same form factor as that new Sony. It lasted me two-and-a-half years as my sole computer. The resolution of the screen was way too high though, and it seriously started to wear on my eyes. I suppose having that as your primary computer isn't the smartest idea.

I have a 12" Powerbook now and I couldn't be happier. Power, portability and visibility.

[Edit: NM. It seems I was thinking of another Sony that looks similar, just a little bigger.]
