Does anyone really care about wireless charging?

I always lose my cords when I switch around to say laptop/desktop/car to charge my phone so having a wireless pad on my desk that anyone with a wireless charge capable phone can use is a plus.

Friends come over and they sometimes forget their cables but the pad is always there.

For me, it's convenient.

The only use of it i see is maybe in cars? Cause i anyway wont be picking it up when driving?
But then most modern cars have Android auto and CarPlay so you anyway need to connect a cable, which will charge it also. Hence useless there too.
Yeah it's useless basically.

It seems that you can't have your case on in most cases. That makes it completely dead to me. Way too inconvenient.

My latest phone is the first I've owned that supports it. I bought a charger for it thinking it would be more convenient to drop/pick the phone every evening/morning or in the middle of the night, except that apparently the phone has to be in a very specific position for it to work, and if I'm a few cm off it keeps detecting and losing the charger, making me get up to fix it. Also apparently wireless is less effective, and will use up more energy.
So now I'm using the connector on the charging base instead of the wireless surface, making that feature completely irrelevant. It takes me one second longer to put the phone on the base, but at least I know for sure that it's charging.

I use my phone while is charging a lot of the time, wireless charging only works for me if I let it charge overnight, nevermind that it's 10x slower than just plugging in a USB-C cable. Truly do not care about this feature.

Would only make sense in a car or train for me, generally someplace where I don't have to use the phone and I am able to use something else, i.e. driving with a Cartainment system and a laptop on the train.

I pretty much exclusively charge wirelessly so I wouldn't be without it now. Phone goes on the charging station at night, no messing about finding the cable or having a cable just lying about on the bed side cabinet. Just a nice classy wireless station. I have a second one next to the work desk for the same reason. If someone contacts me during the day it's easy to retrieve and I can roam about without having to unplug, or I can easily hit the speaker button and leave it docked. I also found the usb c connect on my phone is flimsy at best (still with a Galaxy S8) so cable charging is hit and miss.

Love wireless charging. Just need to retrofit it to the car's charging bay and I'll be set.

The only way I would want it, or consider it worth it, is if the phone was literally waterproof. not resistant. not IP rated. Waterproof. You make that thing totally usable in a pool, and I'll get used to wireless charging.

I mean it's quite hard to talk underwater and wet touch-screens don't tend to work very well (not even if it's raining a bit).

Back on-topic, wireless charging is pointless. I think the only benefit I can see is not having so much wear on the charging port as that's an area that can cause issues sometimes.

I don't mean for use necessarily -- i just mean like the 'ol "get pushed in the pool" etc.

I know most phones can withstand that nowadays, but there's always the chance it doesn't, regardless of it's raing.

Uh... the vast VAST majority of cases can stay on during wireless charging. I personally haven’t seen any that don’t work, but there might be some that don’t.

As someone who doesn't use the phone often it is convenient. I imagine the more you use it the less convenient it becomes.

I very much like having contact charging, where you set something in a dock, but the qi wireless charging is horrible.

Samsung phones?
I have a work provided Samsung in a case that does wireless charging without any problems.
The older model Samsung we used to have didn’t work, but that’s because the phone didn’t have the wireless charging ability built into it.

Okay that's one case.

I'll use it if a phone I get someday happens to have it. Once I use it I can see myself not wanting to go back.

Yes I cared that, half of the time, my phone wasn‘t chareged in the morning when I had one on my night table. Shit was way too finicky and I went back to cables.

I have one by my bed and really like it. It charges faster than wired and works with my case on.

Imagine a different history where we had wireless charging BEFORE wires.

Then wired charging becomes a thing, and suddenly there is hysteria from MORE EFFECTIVE CHARGING! NOW YOU CAN USE A PHONE WHILE YOU CHARGE!

Wireless charging would be like VHS tapes.

I got an angled upright one, and it worked fine.

I haven't used it in months, because I'd rather plug it in to slow/normal charge so I can still pick it up and use it (I try to avoid this, but it's sometimes needed), I found the convenience of putting it down to charge wasn't all that much, and the phone would often heat up more than necessary from the fast charging.

I could get a horizontal one and plug it into a lower powered USB adapter, but then there's the issue of improper placement affecting charging efficiency. Really, it's nothing special and I'd much rather live without the added weight of the glass back panel.

I’ve been using wireless charging for years, even though it doesn’t seem like it the tech has come a long way from the days of having to stick the charge coil to the back of your phone.

I have wireless charging pads everywhere next to my bed, in my car and at work. So yes, yes I do care.

I never thought about it previously and thought it was a gimmick. My new car came with it and I will never get a car without it again.

I will probably never buy one for home but it’s great for road trips.

Only once Apple 'invented' wired charging.

My alarm clock (which I don't use as alarm..) is also a wireless charger. So when I go to bed that's the only time I charge my phone anyway, so why shouldn't I just put it on top, it's convenient.

I don't really care about it for a handheld device, but the goal would be for the wireless range to increase, and for it to be used for non-handheld devices.

Sticking wireless chargers along the side of the road, so that you can get endless mileage on an electric vehicle as you drive, for example, would be fantastic.

Used my Pixel 5's reverse wireless charging feature to charge my toothbrush in a pinch... saved me from having to buy and use an inferior manual brush on a trip

We already have tech that can do long range wireless power/charging... the issue is simple physics: it takes exponentially more power to increase range. A typical 10watt wireless phone chargers wastes about half of that and only charges at 5watts. To get something like 5,000watt wireless charging for a car, you would need a 10,000watt charger that essentially dumps 5,000w constantly and would be a huge waste of power.

Strikes me as a gimmick. It takes me all of a few seconds to plug in my phone in the morning, then grab it when I head out. The technology is somewhat neat as an idea I suppose, but I just don't care enough to bother with it.

I have like 3 wireless chargers, end up rarely ever using it and only for my AirPods

it’s mildly convenient to just throw them on my charger near my door whenever I get home and grab them when I’m on my way out

I never really use it for my iPhone though. Wired is faster too

Nah. I love wireless charging.

My cable is always falling on the floor, so I have to look for it.

I have a stand up pad that is stupidly easy to line up perfectly for the charge.

I can just pop it on and off constantly. I always have a decent charge left on my phone. And wireless charging actually charges my phone pretty fast.

It's probably degrading the battery faster, but mehhh. I get a new phone in 2 years anyways. Couldn't care less.

Most phone features are absolutely beyond me.

I like browsing the web, listening to music, GPS,, camera, calculator, and I have a Dictionary app. Texting and calling too, obviously.

Everything else? Meh. It's a neat little multitool though

Wireless charging is great. Just put you device down, come back and it’s charged. No fucking with wires or ports.

cannot wait until all devices have the feature and it’s fully standardized and homes are build with “stations” like the do power outlets.

I've never used it but I think I would like it. I'll say that I'm sick to death (SICK) of chargers breaking if you look at them wrong. Granted I have two kids so carelessness is in play, but we go through chargers so quickly it's super annoying. It's not the expense that bothers me though, just the inconvenience of not having a charging cable when you need it. So, in conclusion fuck phone chargers, may I shoudl try wireless sooner rather than later.

I guess another concern I have is durability. Doesn’t inductive charging create a load of excess heat that shortens the lifespan of your battery?

And the fact that it’s less efficient is a minor consideration too.

My phone battery lasts all day, and I only charge at night. I just drop it on the wireless charging pad (stand now, just got an upright fast charging stand for christmas) and pick it up in the morning.

6000mAh phone that lasts up to two days and is charged in 2-4hours, mostly when I'm sleeping. I use it a lot and can't have it lying around and/or focus on getting it back on the charging pad.

I got one recently that’s a 3 in 1.
It charges my Air Pods, Apple Watch and iPhone all at the same time.
The phone charger part is raised up so at night I can charge the phone while having it propped up and watch a movie

To preface, I’m far from a phone nerd. I’m still rocking an iPhone 8 and I’m absolutely happy with it. Yes, I’m still on the “huge chin and forehead” bandwagon, and honestly struggle to see the massive benefit of being rid of that. Yes, more screen real estate would always be a a bonus but I can honestly say (obvious confirmation bias aside) I’m not massively disappointed that my phone screen doesn’t stretch the entire length of the body of the phone.

Would that be cool? I guess so, provided I put a lot of value into something that I hold right up to my face anyway. Do I really care that much to pay for an upgrade? Not really to be honest, i don’t really get the appeal. Most videos are shot in a certain aspect ratio anyway.

But all this is an aside to my main question, what’s the post of wireless charging? Like, who cares? To me it’s a backwards step.

“I can charge my phone by simply resting it on a specific place on a pad, but I can’t use it while it’s charging and it wastes a bunch of energy/money by virtue of the early days of the technology. But I don’t have to fuss with a cable, man that was such a chore!”

“Oh right. I just click a cable into the bottom, takes like a second, and I can still use it while it’s charging, it’s pretty cool.”

Honestly, I’m often behind the times a little with technological advances but I genuinely don’t understand why this is a forward step.

“It’s amazing! You can just put your phone down on a pad and charge it less efficiently without being able to interact with it at all! It’s the future!”

“Or you could just, you know, simply click a cable into the bottom and keep using it as you were and charge it more effectively into the bargain.”

Am I missing something? Genuine question.

I love my wireless speed charging platform.

Cable always break or the slots for the cable

Wireless charging + Wireless Android Auto (when it works) is awesome

Just need to get a mat that delivers enough charging rate - I am a bit worried about heat since it's in my center console and my phone's gone into reduced performance mode on occasion after long drives with GPS and Spotify going full bore.

My phone is an $80 Android from China and it's lasted me perfectly the last few years. The screen is big, no bezel, it has NFC and if it doesn't break I don't see myself replacing it any time soon.
