I don't even remember the last time I actually went into a store and bought a CD.. I remember I vowed to download music but still buy the CDs of artist who I truly enjoy and wanted to support, but that sure as hell didn't last long-especially went I finally made the jump from dial-up to broadband. I'm in to deep now, unless there are some unforeseen, long term computer problems, who knows when the next time I'll pay $15 for a CD again.

I legally download most of the music that I listen to, but for bands I REALLY like (Tool, Manics, U2) I'll pick up the CD as well.

I buy Cds (and records/LPs) all of the time.

I'm going to stay out of this one, however, as I tend to get quite prissy when it come to the whole filesharing/mp3s becoming the standard/people actually paying for an mp3/etc.

I just bought the Aquabats "Charge!" and Colin Hay's "Man at Work". I usually find myself buying really hard to find records, though there are a few bands for whom I will purchase cds. (ie Rush, They Might Be Giants, Aquabats....)

I was thinking the same thing...I haven't bought a cd in...Ages. I can't remember the last cd I actually went out to the store and bought. Wait wait...It was...The Halo 2 Soundtrack! But before that I don't know.

the only time I don't buy CDs is when I don't have much money (i mean, at all). Otherwise, I do.

I haven't bought a "CD" in a while because I've been unemployed. But I got a job now so I'm ready to burn $300 or more each month on music, finally!

CDs still cost around $25 here, so like ... no. Albums aren't worth $25 these days :p

I'll buy a song or get a single from the band's website if I really want something.

All the time, although I'll admit that it's not everything. I mostly download music from artists that I'm unfamiliar with, and also rarities (unreleased, live, etc.). If I like what I hear, then I'll purchase a legit copy.

Yep, last one I also bought, I was caught in all the halo hype, before that it would have to be the Bad Boys 2 Soundtrack and I cant even remeber before that

Probably Canada.

While I don't buy as many CDs as I used to, I also don't listen to as much new music as I used to. Since I got an HD based MP3 player I've found that I go back and listen to older stuff more often and therefore look for new stuff less and less. I actually did buy two CDs last night though. There's something to be said about the album as a whole, the discography, that you don't get by just randomly downloading whatever song.

I stopped when I couldn't rip "Let It Be... Naked" to my Mac (there were no workarounds at that point), so I said fuck it. All iTunes downloads now.

I still buy CDs. I just grabbed the Batman Begins score from iTunes though, since Best Buy didn't have any copies. I like that it was cheaper and convenient, but it worries me greatly to start investing in digital files. Price might win me over though, especially now that I took the first plunge.

"owning" a buncha mp3s with no tangible disc or cd art etc irritates me.

Yeah, that sucks. I can't really understand people that buy whole albums on iTunes without a real cd and a nice cover.

Same here. Most of my CD purchasing is to validate my MP3 collection, not to get new music. And i agree about listening to an album as a whole. There's nothing like the kind of journey a well-ordered album can take you on. i get tired of making my own mixes a lot of times, especially when it comes to making them for others, because i get so anal with it. As a result, i've kept the same playlist of files for the majority of the past two months.

Even more since I am able to preview them online or through file-sharing. Doubt the RIAA would believe me, but radio and GAF isn't enough to sell me on any album unless I can preview it somehow. And then I usually rip it to my HD based MP3 player for the commute or here at work.

The way I see it, buying music online is still a rip-off. I can go down to Amoeba Records and get a "used CD" (usually a new shrinkwrapped promo copy or cut-out) for $4.99-$7.99, or I could buy the album for 99 cent a song. If you want the whole disc, it's still better to buy the actual CD.

If there are a lot of songs on it, the entire album could be $15-$20, and you don't even get the hardcopy CD + liner notes. At that rate, even the CD at full price is often a better deal.

I buy them all the time but also occasionally download. I find it humorous though when Americans bitch about having to pay $13 for a CD when I pay $30+ to import an album from Japan, $20+ for a single... $50-80 for a concert DVD. I know records companies screw as all anyway but if I were into American music I wouldn't bitch about $13 as much...

I buy CDs and 7"s all the time. I refuse to pay for digital material unless it's the only way it can be obtained (ie. the iTunes exclusive Death Cab EP). I love having something physical. I love rifling through liner notes and lyrics. As for my iPod (used primarily at work), I just rip my CDs onto it, but I still listen to CDs at home and in the car.

i completely agree, but the advantages are that it's extremely convenient and the music is ready to play in iTunes, so you don't have to go through the process of ripping it. i still think iTunes and most similar services are a rip off, simply because you're getting inferior grade music for about the same price as the original disc. Give me lossless for the same price as lossy, and i'll consider it.

i "have" to pay the same prices for discs imported from Japan as well, which is why i usually buy stuff used if i can find it.

I buy more CDs than I ever have before, but I also tend to buy a good chunk of those second-hand through Amazon -- you just can't beat $2-$10 CDs really, especially since you're paying for CD quality audio. I do buy CDs in store as well, but that's only new releases generally so I can take advantage of the sale prices, at least at large retailers like Best Buy. Otherwise, I'll gladly support my local CD shop here since they have great selection on the whole, they're open late, and I find all sorts of good stuff through there.

I don't really buy CD's anymore.. For the main reason being that I've had too many CD's break. (Yes, break.) I had a $35 CD I had imported that broke, that ticked me off. Plus I kinda don't have a job and I'm already spending alot on my gaming hobby. But once I get a job again and am ready to take better care of CD's, I'll buy them again. Since there is alot of CD's that I really want to buy. :) Sadly though, I think quite a bit I'll have to import from the internet.

How do you break CDs?

All the time. I download a lot of music and I find it's a worthy album, I almost always buy it. Most of the time I get a pre-release from a new band or something and get it when its available legally. People who don't ever buy CDs really piss me off to be honest.

I never buy off iTunes though and never will. I like the physicality of buying an album in CD format even if I rarely use the CD itself. If I'm just going to have a digital form of the song, I'm going to download it for free.

Most recently I've used this for legitimate purchases:

It's changed the way I listen to music. One track here and one track there from average CDs or worse... or obviously the full recording if I like the sound of every track. 79p is a steal. I spend more than that buying snacks/drinks in work everyday.

There are a few bands that I will bother to buy CDs for though. I like the physical artifact -- the idea of something physical, with sleeve notes, lyrics, credits and nice artwork that you can collect and store.

Constantly. I like supporting music stores I like, I like having artwork, and I'm not interested in throwaway groups (if I get one disc by an artist, odds are I'll end up with the whole discography).

This "FBI ANTI-PIRACY WARNING" crap is really pissing me off, though. I'm hoping someone releases an album that only has that logo for the artwork.

Yeah that really fucking pisses me off. If they must put it, they should at least make it a sticker instead of runing the artwork/ actual cd art.

Honestly, I'm not exactly sure. One like exploded in my CD drive once somehow, I really don' t know how that happened. Now I'm paranoid to use that drive. Guess it was hungry. :( Though the main reason was probably from the fact I only had a small CD case thing I carry around and I shoved like a million disks in there, when it wasn't made for that many at all. :x

For me it's the fact that the audio is completely uncompressed, unless it's a shitty pop album with dynamic compression.

I still buy CD's, and for 98% of my music I will continue to do so. I just bought an iPod yesterday, too. I have a folder with about a hundred mp3's of various artists, and I occasionally download an album from a band I like, but I've still purchased the actual disc of nearly every album I've downloaded, and nearly all of the mp3's I have are singles.

300chf ain't shit to me
I buy CDs all the time. There's something nice about having the booklet, pictures, tracklist, and lyrics, and if it's a solid album I figure the CD deserves to be purchased.

There's a bit more nostalgia to me when I open up a CD I bought a few years ago and pop it in and listen while I leaf through the booklet.

Of course if there are only one or two good songs on an album, I just download those.

I always rip all of my CDs to back them up, but when it comes to listening to music, my discman gets a lot more use then my mp3 player. :)

I'm going to start buying vinyl, I think. That way I can be hip like Star Power.

I buy CDs all the time, though. I feel bad if I don't.

well if apple would hurry up and fucking release the ITMS here, i'd use it - but for now , still buying cd's. although i'll probably react against the itunes music store cos of the whole charging-full-price for 128kbps downloads , etc ;p

OMFG HOLY MOTHER OF MARY IN HEAVEN I CANT BELIEVE IT WTF WHERE ARE MY SEDATIVES AAAAHHH
I don't see how anyone who truly loves and cherishes music, can download songs off the net. Why you ask? Because 99% of songs/albums uploaded on the net are encoded at crappy bit-rates and usually no higher than 128kbps. I have convereted all my CDs to mp3 at no less than 320kbps CBR! Anything less is not worth it, hence I stay away from net downloads. Show me a place I can grab tunes(legally of course) that are encoded at no less than 320 CBR and I'll take the plunge.
