I buy them all the time but also occasionally download. I find it humorous though when Americans bitch about having to pay $13 for a CD when I pay $30+ to import an album from Japan, $20+ for a single... $50-80 for a concert DVD. I know records companies screw as all anyway but if I were into American music I wouldn't bitch about $13 as much...
Well, if you're listening to JPop, you deserve to be ripped off.

I buy CDs whenever I can, but still not as often as I'd like to. Living in NZ, lot of stuff I want takes ages to come out here, and when it does, like all CDs, it's like, $20 US or so.
I downloaded The Futureheads album when it came out in the UK and thought it was awesome, might as well go pick it up. They didn't have it, OK, understandable. April comes around, sister's birthday, I think I'll try and ween her off the shit she has been listening to. Still not in any stores. Finally, like, a month ago I'm in the record store I frequent and they've obviously just got a shipment of it in because there's a few being displayed on the shelf so I pick it up.
I order stuff in, but that's a pain in the ass too. I tried ordering in Edan's Primitive Plus and it apparently hasn't even arrived yet, and I ordered this like, two months ago. I'm pretty sure the useless cunts didn't even bother putting an order through. Not to mention the fact that some weeks I have money spare to buy a CD, but usually I don't, so ordering in only happens if I really want something.

What I think I'll do is download to my heart's content, then every so often, like in the holidays when I have money spare, I'll go and try to buy as much of it as possible. At least then all the shit will be in stock.

As long as it's not on a Major, I'll buy it. I prefer to support the artists, enjoy the package / object, and the effort that was put into it.

My opinion? USED.
I buy all my CD's. The stupid fuckers that distribute MP3's should have their nuts cut off. Not only are you ripping the artist off but you are also proliferating shit quality music into the community. If you have to pirate something, at least FLAC or SHN it !

MP3s do impact the industry but thats not why I buy CDs.

I buy them for the artwork and to say that I own them. I never pay more than $5 a CD though. Used off of Amazon.com is great or pawn shops trying to clearance their boxes upon boxes of CDs to find some great gems to buy for a couple bucks because they don't know much about music.

If not, I wait. If its really rare and I really want it, the ceiling goes to $10. After that, I don't want it. I can live without CDs so I'm not going to pay out the ass for them.

I bought Robert Plant's Mighty Rearranger the other day. Last week I got Get Behind me Satan.

I don't mind buying albums if I really like them, but I always sample them in advance, no way am I spending 20 Euros on a CD I know nothing about.

Actually, you're ripping the label off. If you're a real fan you go to the show and buy some merchandise or music over there, that money actually lands in the wallet of the artist.

I don't see how anyone who truly loves and cherishes music, can download songs off the net. Why you ask? Because 99% of songs/albums uploaded on the net are encoded at crappy bit-rates and usually no higher than 128kbps. I have convereted all my CDs to mp3 at no less than 320kbps CBR! Anything less is not worth it, hence I stay away from net downloads. Show me a place I can grab tunes(legally of course) that are encoded at no less than 320 CBR and I'll take the plunge.
I agree, although my standard is a bit lower (256 or 192kbps).
Itunes is just not worth the money, IMO. First of all, the sound quality is just not very good due to low compression bitrate, and second, there's DRM involved. I know it can be removed, but if you want to remove it and convert the music into something other than AC3 you lose even more sound quality.

Sadly, it seems the illegal way of obtaining the music is the most future proof and convenient way of owning it. For example, the last CD I bought (new Chemical Brothers) I couldn't even listen to on my computer without installing some propriatary crap player, half the songs wouldn't play when I would insert it into the PS2 (because in a way, that's a computer-kind-of drive too), and of course, the DVD drive on the PC wouldn't rip it. The CD now sits there collecting dust and I had to download the album off the IRC. Still, I'd rather do that (buy the useless CD and download high quality MP3 files) than pay for the protected low quality stuff on various music distribution services.

In my opinion, anything that you purchase of the artist helps the artist. Perhaps record sales don't effect bands with monetary gains (that much), but it DOES tell the record companies that people are interested in said band and are making them lots of money. In turn, they will give the band more money to record, better tour support, etc.

So, in my opinion, if you like a band, you should buy a record, t-shirt, concert ticket, hat, poster, button, or SOMETHING to help out that band. Anything less is not caring about the band and/or not being a fan.

And to answer the topics question, yes I most certainly do. I actually just dropped a bunch of money on CDs... I bought The Books collection, TL/Rx's albums, a Blood Brothers album, a Bright Eyes album, a Fiery Furnaces album, and a Piebald album.

I buy CDs all the time. There's something nice about having the booklet, pictures, tracklist, and lyrics, and if it's a solid album I figure the CD deserves to be purchased.

There's a bit more nostalgia to me when I open up a CD I bought a few years ago and pop it in and listen while I leaf through the booklet.

Of course if there are only one or two good songs on an album, I just download those.

I always rip all of my CDs to back them up, but when it comes to listening to music, my discman gets a lot more use then my mp3 player. :)

That just about describes me. Except I'm kind of lazy about ripping my cd's for backup, partly because I have so many of them...it'd take ages to rip them all. The sad part is that I really shouldn't be spending so much money on cd's, so I suppose I'll try to use my mp3 player much more often.

IMO, actually paying for mp3's at this point is a complete ripoff, especially considering you can get them for free at bitrates >128 kbps on slsk...

Precisely. Other than live shows, rare tracks etc....I'll download some songs, or occasionally an album I'm interested in if it's ripped considerably before release (and I can get it easily) but I'd be aghast at the thought of listening to my favourite albums at low bit-rates.

I just bought the Aquabats "Charge!" and Colin Hay's "Man at Work". I usually find myself buying really hard to find records, though there are a few bands for whom I will purchase cds. (ie Rush, They Might Be Giants, Aquabats....)

I would like to thank Tedesco for letting me know there's a new Aquabats. I'll buy their CD today:)

I buy CDs all the time, then burn them to digital format for my PDA/iRiver.

I'd just like to add that Charge!! is the best album ever. Be on the MTV lookout for the video of Fashion Zombies!.

It comes with trading cards. I got MC Bat Commander and the dreamy Jaime the Robot.
