Does the NFL have a crime problem?

I like when the nfl tries to point out that their crime rates are normal compared to society, ignoring the league is made up of everyone making minimum 6 figures and in a lot cases, a lot more.

I agree. You'd have to compare the crime rates to other people who earn as much as NFL players do.

Gilbert Arenas brought multiple guns INSIDE the teams clubhouse, then confronted a teammate. Ron Artest rushed into a crowd to beat the shit out of a fan & is still the dirtiest player in the league, while many others have weapon chargers, even murder (Delonte West, Iverson, JR Smith)

NFL still has them easily but the NBA has plenty of stupid players too...They also have a longer season which probably helps a little

NAH. Still doesnt compare.

NBA Gets 1 or 2 a year. NFL avgs like 20 arrests a season. Too much money to be acting a fool.

What about compared to the crime rate of people (or men I guess) who make at least 6 figures? or whatever the league minimum is

This post isn't meant to be flamebait for others to attack, but here we go:

It seems to me that most of the NFL players that are arrested are black/latinos. I wanted to check if my assumptions are true. So, I looked at all of the arrests made in the last year in the NFL (from july 2012 to July 2013), and I complied all of players and separated them by race. There were well over 60 arrests made in the last year. Some of the charges were dropped, other charges were upheld.

Total of 56 players arrested: (some twice)

48 black (85.7%)
3 white (5.4%)
5 latino (8.9%)

I found that stat to be alarming. So, I checked the percentage of white to black players in the NFL and most of the stats say that 70% of NFL players are black and the rest are white and latino. So, it makes statistical sense that more black players will be arrested on average. But it doesn't explain why only 3 white players were arrested, and freaking 48 black players were arrested!! That is a big difference.

I am not trying to say that black people are more violent/hostile or whatever. I am trying to figure out why they seem to get in trouble more often than other players.

Any sociologists want to chime in?

If there's a crime element in the NFL then it's probably down to a combination of Players maturity, background, amount of money he has and amount of spare time he has.

But that could count for any sport.

Off-topic. Your stats have nothing to do with the OP's question.

Inherently violent sport + large strong athletes + steroids/HGH use + multiple concussions and the resulting brain injuries = ???
The question marks at the end of your statement are pretty fitting considering I don't know what the hell you're getting at. I guess your insinuating that large dudes who play physical sports, who may or may not have a history of brain trauma and using PHD's make them likely to be criminals? Care to explain how you reached that conclusion?

It's a sport that encourages it's players to be violent, give themselves brain damage and take potentially mental/mood altering performance enhancing drugs. It's a shock there haven't been more Aaron Hernandez's to be honest.

Yeah that's the funny thing about people who don't think this is an issue. If these guys were unemployed and barely scraping by in life, criminal behavior wouldn't be that surprising, but they're making hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars per year. The crime rate for other people in their tax bracket is miniscule.

Giants LB Connor Arrested at Philly Airport

PHILADELPHIA — Police and team officials say New York Giants linebacker Dan Connor was arrested at Philadelphia International Airport after federal authorities alleged that a switchblade was found in his luggage.

A police spokeswoman said Sunday that a Transportation Security Administration officer spotted the knife on an X-ray machine monitor as Connor was trying to enter an airport terminal at 9 a.m. Saturday.

Police were called and the 27-year-old Connor, of Charlotte, N.C., was arrested and charged with possession of an offensive weapon. The police spokeswoman said he was released on his own recognizance.

Giants spokesman Pat Hanlon said team officials were aware of the situation and have spoken to Connor, "who is cooperating with the authorities in Philadelphia."

This story just broke lol.

The numbers really do make the OPs question seem hyperbolic and sensationalist. Also you can easily tell whose never played a lick of organized football in their life.

Well, I'm not a sociologist, but I'm not sure if the difference from 70% black players in the NFL to 85% of the arrested players being black is really statistically significant. The sample size of arrested players is rather small. Also, if the number of arrests made on black players was in the same proportion as the number of players in the NFL (so, both being 70%) it would only mean that 8 less black players were arrested, so 40 instead of 48 black players arrested.
Also, if you maybe cross-reference that statistic with the % of crimes in general being committed by different ethnicities, you might find something there. (are black people more likely to be arrested in general?)

No it doesn't Crime has been going down in America pretty much every year since the late 80's or early 90's afaik. Let me go find the info.

Sure taking a long time getting the info :)

The data I gave you is up to date. United States has a higher crime index than Russia in 2013.
