Does time feel like it's moving faster?

I think it's to do with number and or intensity of emotions/feelings

like doing something you hate lasts forever and doing a lot of different things you like makes the day feel much longer, in memory

Line up behind someone older than you at a supermarket checkout, and you will realize there are people for who time whizzes past even faster.

Yup. Remember being a child? And waiting for Christmas to come and how every day moved slower than greased molasses and that it was "never going to get here"? Nowadays most of us see December 18th and freak out on "wasn't Thanksgiving a week ago!".

Well, stuff like that helps explains my mindset somewhat. The amount of work and stress at my job increases a lot in November and December due to the holiday season. I guarantee that period of time went by faster for me as a kid than for me nowadays.

I feel like people oversimplify this idea, would like to see some science on it.

For me time only goes faster when I am stuck in a period of time where everyday is similar, usually during a depressive period where I don’t leave the house much.

The two years of the pandemic feel liek they went by so fast because I don’t have many distinct memories to associate with each day, but before this I was in college and I remember thinking that it felt so much longer than high school.

The more familiar you are with your day to day routines the faster time will go.
This is why as you get older time seems to go fast.
And then there's times that seem to go slow

It's almost April, but it feels like Christmas was just a couple of weeks ago. Time flies the older you get, it helps you fast forward through the boring stuff though.

Maybe there's a connection between the accelerating expansion of the universe to that acceleration of time perceptible to the human mind.

Yes. Because it does. The older you become, the faster time is perceived.

Yeah. I believe the older you get, the less highlights there is. You've seen it all and done most of the things multiple times. Less highlights means there's less things to stick in the memory. If you want time to "move" more slowly, do something new or untypical every day.

What..? The more fun you're having or doing something new the faster time is perceived. Thats how it goes, not the other way around. It's when you're just bored out of your mind when time is perceived slower.

I believe there are two factors involved here, current time and perceived time.

Current time: The more focused and alert you are the slower time will move, hence the saying ‘a watched pot never boils’, or why you recall school as being the slowest part of your life. (Due to each school day requiring a lot of focus)

Perceived time: Memory based, if you follow the same routine your brain cuts it as it’s unneeded, boring, repetitive data, shortening your memories.

Time is relative and also a flat circle.

I was thinking the same thing. It’s almost April we are nearly a third of the way through the new year.

But I know what you mean sometimes I brush my teeth with the electric toothbrush and the 2mins can fly by other times. I feel like I could watch a movie in the time it takes to stop.

Time seemed to go slower as a kid because of all the new impressions and experiences you constantly had.

If you're just stuck in routine as an adult it will fly by.

Retrospectively. When you look back, a year seems to have been longer as there are more things to remember.

Of course time goes faster when at that moment. We spoke of two different things.

It’s basic relativity.

The longer you live the shorter our measure of time is in relation to that lived time.

Yep. Each unit of time represents a smaller and smaller portion of your life as you get older. Weeks feel like days now

i remember as a kid a year felt like it lasted forever. i can't believe how quick the last decade went. 2012 to me doesn't feel like it was that long ago.

days/weeks/months go by so damn fast now it's terrifying. i don't like getting older :messenger_tears_of_joy: by my age, my parents had me. i've almost lived as long without my dad than i have with him and i'm now 2/3rds his age when he died. it's shit like that which is making me feel old .i am much more aware of my mortality. i wouldn't be surprised if i was dead in 10-15 years...and like i said the last 10 years have went by quickly. while i hope i have many years left...it might not feel like it. time is slipping away.

No that makes no sense. "Time flies when you're having fun" does not have a predefined time. It applies to months, years, decades, etc. People will always be like "damn time sure flew by fast, cuz I did a lot of stuff". Absolutely no one is going to say time went by fast by doing nothing or being bored, lmao.

It is about memory and retrospective perspective of time. Looking back a year seems to have been going slower if you have spent doing new stuff and faster if lived by following routines as there are less things to remember.

Google more yourself.

Nah. Nothing to google. We aint doing science and facts here.

Here's another thing to think about

On your 40th birthday, you are 16,398,720,000 miles away from the spot in the universe that you were born.

and that's still only 0.027 light years away from the spot in the universe that you were born.

Also, every molecule and atom in your body is made up from material that came from a star or stars that formed billions of years ago.
