Dolphin - Emulating Wii and Gamecube Games

Started Star Fox Adventures (up to Thorn Tail Hollow) and i'm having pretty significant stuttering issues. Running 3x native on a 660ti paired with a 6600k. Is this another game that's highly susceptible to shader compilation issues? There's nothing on the wiki, and i'm not seeing many others online with similar issues. Just roaming around, i'll get significant stuttering every few seconds. Some of the cut scenes in Krazoa palace also performed poorly.
This is one of the more GPU-intensive games especially when certain graphical effects are in play. On my GTX 960 it can hit over 90% GPU usage at times. You don't have SSAA enabled do you? Try DX12 as well.

are there any plans to add motion plus emulation? i really want to play my copy of skyward sword and give it another chance. maybe ill like better and actually play it for real if i can play the whole thing with my steam controller.

Pairing via Toshiba Blue tooth Stack is annoying. Any other convenient alternatives or do I have to get that May flash wireless bar?
On Windows 8 and 10 you no longer need the Toshiba stack to pair a MotionPlus wiimote. You can pair the wiimote with the default bluetooth drivers. It will probably still be a little annoying, but it works.

Trying to play Mario Galaxy today and the framerate has dropped from 60 to 25 max. I haven't changed a single thing since last time :/

Anyone know what happened?

EDIT: Aaaaand I just found my power cable unconnected right after I posted this. *facepalm*

(Fixed)

Isn't there already? I can dimly remember people playing this with Xbox controllers on Dolphin while it was still relatively new.

I personally got along with the original controls very well though and find it difficult coming up with a mapping that would allow me to emulate the directional swings where they were needed to the same effect as just flicking the Wiimote back then did. Google around a bit, maybe you'll find those people's controller setups that work well for Skyward Sword and can adapt it for the Steam Controller. Maybe there is also already a ready to use setup around as well.

Interesting, but I have no intention upgrading my current PC to Win 10. Guess, I'll have to persevere until I finish Skyward Sword. Thanks.

Never officially. Years ago a custom branch implemented it, but that's it. It's something that has to be supported at the emulator level, just a controller configuration wouldn't allow the functionality.

Ah, that's good to know. I was under the impression that I wouldn't really be limited by any game at 3x native with my card but I see that's not the case.

I'm confused how its legal to emulate Nintendo games like this? Isn't it depriving Nintendo or profit as well as the best games of all time being played on machines that have no right to run them?

Neogaf needs a "report post" function.

I think it's legally a grey area. But legal cases have been fought against emulation several times and the makers of the respective emulators always won.

But if theyre your own games you shouldnt feel at all bad about format shifting them so you can play with much greater visual fidelity and flexibility.

And Nintendo don't make or sell GameCubes or Wii's anymore so you aren't depriving them of anything in terms of hardware sales.

And the PC is an open platform. It having the "right" to run a game is utterly irrelevant.

No see the only way we play dolphin games is by legally ripping them ourselves off of disks we bought to create legal backups of games we own.

Anything else is hella illegal and not worth discussing.

I buy all the games. I have a full bookcase of them. Then I rip them using a softmodded Wii. Then I play them on my PC. I don't know how else I could pay to play the games on a computer. It is perfectly legal to reverse engineer the Wii's hardware architecture and to make an emulator based on that. I don't think Nintendo has an actual problem with that too, as long as you buy their games and systems. They don't lose money everytime I play Xenoblade in HD on my PC.

Emulation has been found to be legal multiple times in the US. Bleem won their court case. Actually, I cant think of a time where emulation hasnt come out ahead.

Any screens? Is it also GPU-accelerated now or still push the CPU?

Dolphin- Ishiiruka.699. Settings: 6x Internal Resolution (4k), Bicubic Filtering 5x, AF 16x, Phong Lighting, DOF, Dolphin fx only for sharpness and SSAO

Pushed my gpu to 85 usage and shot up to 100 anytime I used the drill or some explosion happened. CPU just stayed at the teens. If I turn off the Bicubic filtering and reduce Internal resolution to 2k its near flawless 60fps.

I made the images smaller cause putting the full 1080p pic on gaf seemed to mess up the page in the preview.

That SSAO reminds me of Far Cry 3's implementation, and definitely not in a good way.

Yeah, It can be really bad in some spots. In Wind Waker, Link's hair always appears dirty with some black stuff on top of it. Still, the sense of depth it provides to the environment is pretty amazing.

Y'know, I gotta say I really appreciate that you actually agree, because I've been around gaf/the internet long enough to realize that people love tightening up the grafichsx with mods regardless of its implementation or what it does to the original art.

Levels vary in the game. Could be the level you're on now is much more demanding.

I know, but it was at the main screen. My laptop's power cable wasn't connected and that was the issue and only realized it wasn't connected after 45 mins of pointless fiddling with options, lol.

What's this ishiruka some are using? Is it better than 5.0?

Its a custom Dolphin 5.0 with the ability to add some additional graphical effects like SSAO, Rim lighting and some post processing effects. At least from what I seem to notice.

It also handles Metroid Prime better, with far less hitching. I also haven't had an issue with the black bar popping up once I switched.

That black bar is fixed anyways. Set External Frame Buffer to Virtual.

For those new to Dolphin, right click your game in the main screen and click 'Wiki.' It will take you to the game's wiki page on the Dolphin Wiki, which will usually document any issues with emulation, and how to get around them.

I tried that, but then my map started spazzing out, along with other visual glitches.

I can vouch for it. Just tried it and the 'Fast EFB access' is glorious! Without it my FPS in SMG drops from 60 to 27!

I think it works even better than 'Skip EFB Access from CPU'.

I have these settings on, plus FXAA:

Have a new PC wanted to finally give Dolphin another shot since my last PC couldn't cut it I guess..

Every game runs at 60fps but feels stuttery at just random times? All games do it, have only tried F Zero GX and Freekstyle. Both running great, 60fps , 3x native res, and following the settings on the Wiki for each game.

There's just random times where it feels stuttery or choppy even though it's 60fps (says so on framerate counter and on msi afterburner. Something I did try was changing the power management mode in nvidia settings to prefer maximum performance which I thought my fix it but it didn't.

Any advice?

Did you try v-sync? or 'Skip EFB Access from CPU'?

Max out your AF. It's free compared to what you're enabling.

Lovely. I'll try it out. Thanks.

I had messed around with those earlier as well.

I believe I've fixed it though. I thought OpenGL (the default method of rendering) would have been ok but DX11 fixed it so far in all games.

Oh, glad it worked. I just assumed you're on DX. If you have Windows 10 you can try DX12 too.

Just a word of warning, enabling certain cheats in Skyward Sword can mess with your save data. These were the following cheats I had enabled:

Disable Fi's Dowsing Reminder
No Notification The First Time You Collect A Bug Or Treasure
Disable Low Health Alarm
Disable Fi's Low Health Warning
Disable Fi's Low Shield Gauge Warning
Disable Fi's Low Battery Warning
Text Speed Modifier (XXXX Times Normal Text Speed)

Gonna spoiler tag stuff for people that haven't played Skyward Sword yet.

And what happened was Pipit's questline progress being reset, even after having completed it. Maybe this only occurred because I started using the codes partway through the save file. After getting
Karane and Pipit
together, I noticed after enabling the cheats that Cawlin was once again by the window
thinking about the letter you just delivered
, in the classroom
about to talk to Karane
, and in Groose's bedroom
crying that he blew it
. Yes, Cawlin was in three places at once. After disabling 'Disable Fi's Dowsing Reminder,' the Cawlin by window was gone (this is good), Cawlin was still in the bedroom (good), but Cawlin was still in the classroom waiting to
talk to Karane
(not good). This was probably because I had saved and quit earlier while the Cawlin time paradox was still happening because I didn't want to lose my progress up to that point. Normally, once
Cawlin and Karane
are in the classroom, walking near it automatically triggers a cutscene where
Karane must choose between Cawlin and Pipit
, but this cutscene never triggers again, and trying to speak to Cawlin shows no dialog. I think as far as the game is concerned,
Karane and Pipit
are together, but some of the flags are now messed up so Pipit
is still upstairs
instead of
in the classroom with Karane
.

Another thing that is messed up is the progress with Pipit's mom. I've already
cleaned her house, gotten the gratitude crystals, and overheard Pipit scolding at his mom from outside their house at night
. Yet all of this has been reset, I can
clean her house again to receive the gratitude crystals again, and I can trigger the scolding cutscene
again. Except, once Pipit exits the house after the
scolding
a conversation with Link should trigger, but it doesn't. Link just continues to stare in the window until you reset the game.

None of this is game breaking, but it's still something to watch out for. I think that 'Disable Fi's Dowsing Reminder' was the culprit, but I can't be sure. I know these cheats are popular when playing Skyward Sword since they take away some of the more annoying aspects of the game, but just be careful. If you notice anything strange happening, do not save your progress and try disabling cheats.

Seeing as how I can dump most of the textures from games and edit them, I decided to see what Zelda: Four Swords Adventures looks like with Minish Cap graphics for better art style consistency with the Toon Zelda designs. I would use more of the original GBA Four Swords, but my findings for that game's sprite tiles came up fruitless or couldn't be used due to coloring reasons.
I might progress into it more if I ever get the chance.

That's neat.

These re my laptop's specs, any settings I should set to for best visuals and performance?
GTX GeForce 770M
Intel Core i7-4700HQ CPU @ 2.4 GHz
16 GB RAM

EDIT: I should add I hadn't gotten any other gfx plugins for Dolphin, I just got 5.0 straight from the site :x

I was gonna start super mario galaxy 2 on wii u but my friend said to give it a shot on dolphin. Was a small pain to set up but my lord does it look worlds better!

Load up four swords adventures in VBA and you can rip the graphics coloured correctly straight from the vram viewer

Jesus Christ the Mario Galaxy games are so gorgeous. Do they even look that good when played on a Wii U? Even the new Digital versions?

Nintendo needs to do a Mario Galaxy remaster/collection so bad.

The things is, you fall in the minority. Most people that use the emulator don't do that.

Going farther, someone could have a vast Wii collection and still download ROMs for game he might not own.

Even in this very thread from time to time you see guys that kind of let slip that they are donwloading the games and probably haven't owned a Wii console (let alone games)

Is commendable that there are people, like in your case, that emulate games they own. On the other hand it doesn't bother me if someone comes questioning the use of emulators either. More so in this day and age when the existance of new games of these type could be reaching it's end.

Can we please not start a witch hunt, you're making a lot of assumptions about people with your first sentence alone...
