Dolphin - Emulating Wii and Gamecube Games

Yeah you're good :lol

I must have optimization problems or something cause im trying to play dead space and it runs at like 50%. What can I do to make it run at least 3/4 of full speed?

Ok, can someone explain all the excitement over OpenCL? I've been away for a few months. Also, how do I go about getting the new speed improvements? Are they just general optimizations or do I have to use a certain DirectX version or what?

Radeon 5770 on this pc right now...
This.

What i did was.

Install the SDK for your videocard, in my case it was the ATi SDK.
Downloaded the ATi build that this guy is making - http://forums.dolphin-emu.com/thread-10196.html
Ran the dxwebupdate to make sure dx was upto date.

That was it from memory :lol
Apparently my GPU doesn't support OpenCL. Is this new build useless to me or are there still useful updates in there? Any way to trasnfer saves between builds too or no?

I don't think there's any updates then that could help you.

As for transfering saves, i'm not too sure. Never looked into it, Can't imagine it being too hard.

That seems about right. The only games I've found to run at consistent full speed on the i7 720 is stuff like NSMB and Muramasa. Full 3D fare like Galaxy's and shooters are generally around 50% or less in most places. This emu is still primarily CPU based, and laptop processors just don't cut it. If these OpenCL builds are refined far enough you may see some improvements thanks to your GPU, but for now, I don't think I've seen anyone report tremendous gains with it.

Right click game on list > open wii save folder > copy its data folder over following the same directory structure (or just copy all saves by copying the entire user\wii\title folder).

OCL hasn't gotten me any noticeable improvements. Starting to warm up to D3D11 though, fixes some pretty big bugs with A Boy and His Blob and Geometry Wars while keeping 60fps.

So at this moment in time, what is the ballpark figure would you be talking to run Dolphin at maximum on the most intensive games?
5850 at least is my guess

Kinda off-topic:

This may sound like a silly question, but I am happy with my graphics card, an Nvidia GTX 260 (it is probably a first gen)

Am I really going to see a dramatic improvement if i went with the Radeon 5870 or 5850? I don't want to spend $400+ canadian for a new graphics card if it won't be that much of a leap performance wise.

I kinda meant the cost for an entire new system (2.3ghz C2D ain't gonna cut it), but that gives me a partial estimate of the wallet damage.

An overclocked Intel i5 Dualcore/Quadcore (3.3 - 3.5 Ghz seems to be the sweet spot for most games) should give you great performance under dolphin. Your GPU, as long as it isn't a crappy integrated one, shouldn't have much effect under dolphin. My 5850 doesn't go above 30% load in SMG2. A DirectX10 or 11 card is recommended for the new plugin.

Wii classic controller pro work fine with gamecube games i assume?

I like that controller the best..

Anyone suggest a good bluetooh device i can pick up at walmart?

Let's just say that if you're trying to be frugal, and you spend over $1300, you're doing it wrong. A nice system capable of running dolphin very nicely should run you around $800-$900. Less if you already own a capable PSU, HDD, Case, etc.

last xmas i got myself a intel i920 quad core preocessor, Nvidia gtx 260 1.8 gig videocard, 12 gigs of tri channel ram.. 1 TB HD, high end sound card etc for less than 1500 from dell. I've yet to play anything that doesn't play smooth as hell. My first time buying through dell.. I got a nice machine with no issues up to now.

it was a great deal at the time.. the system are still going for a similar price.

Run Dolphin flawlessly

ok so i got my wii remote working np and wii motion plus and the nunchuck.. that's all good

important question..

Is there anyway i can use my classic controller or classic controller pro for gamecube games?? I really don't want to have to buy a controller for PC

Has anyone played Skies of Arcadia in Dolphin? I'm going to do another playthrough soon, and I'm thinking it would be cool to do Legends in this emulator instead of using my Dreamcast's VGA adapter. It doesn't have an official thread on the Dolphin forums and a quick Googling suggests that it has music issues I probably wouldn't be able to live with. I figured I'd ask in here first though just in case someone else had experience with it.

I tried to and had all kinds of sound and graphical problems.

I hope someday getting the ISOs onto my computer will be as easy as putting the disc in the drive and building the .iso with a program. (unless it is now and I should RTFM?)

Ok I just tried this Dolphin 2.0 thing. I am new to this but I have a i7 920 and for some reason my NSMB runs like it is in slow motion. Am i missing something? I still have my 9.12 drivers.

edit: ok changed the enable efb setting to TExture and it does not slow down anymore but now it is actually TOO FAST!+ stuttering wtf dont know how to explain it but thing move way too fast. Any advice?

it is. you just need a softmodded wii to do it.

Jads you blow my mind every time.

As soon as I get back from this family trip it's Sin & Punishment time. I have been a little out of it with Dolphin for a bit.

Some screenshots from the best game on the Wii.
(Note that these are at gameplay settings, which for this game means locked 60 FPS, anything other than that is unacceptable)

I have a few great ones from the final level but that may be too much of a spoiler.

Settings:
Revision 5817
DirectX 9 plugin w/ OpenCL
3x EFB scale
Fast Safe Texture Cache (the game needs this at only 3 or 4 points, so you may disable it if you need the speed)
EFB scaled copy and 16xAF
EFB Copy to Texture

Alright, I'm interested in upgrading my rig for this and PCSX2. However, an i7 is way too expensive for my wallet. The i5 is cheaper but they don't come at 3GHz+ and I'd like to avoid overclocking in fear of reducing the CPU lifespan (my PC room is a very, very hot place).

Would a Phenom II X4 or X6 (3.4GHz and 3.2GHz stock) be up for the task without overclocking?

Thanks, you just made these couple days before I get home a whole lot harder.

You really need the highest clock frequency you can get, the core count doesn't matter at all beyond 3 (the third already doesn't do much but may in the future). If you are dead set against OC'ing the best solution is probably to get one of the high-clocked dual-core i5s.

Does the game still crash after every level?
Unfortunately yes, but luckily only after saving your progress.

Nope, when running Dolphin though an i5-750 will actually turbo upto ~3ghz and considering Intel's chips are significantly faster clock for clock than AMD's in Dolphin, there's no contest. I'd still recommend a slight overclock though, a proper OC should actually run cooler than a stock setup.

The OpenCL stuff is amazing. Smash Bros Brawl (4 players) went from 50% speed on my machine (i7 860, 5850) to full speed almost all the time. Crazy.

Core i5, 3.2GHz. It's only a dual core, but since the reason you'd be upgrading for doesn't really utilize anything beyond 2 and relies more on 2 cores and a high clock speed, this should be sufficient AND allow you to OC should you ever desire.

are you sure you didn't just have a bad config? i have the same setup and get 100% w/ 4 players. all i noticed w/ cl was missing textures in certain games.
