Dolphin - Emulating Wii and Gamecube Games

Sorry if this has been asked before, but how dramatic is the performance difference between a Core i5 and i7 running at the same clock speed?
They should be very close to even when, dolphin is considered since it only uses two threads> overall power though the i7 really outclasses the i5 in anything that can use up to 8 threads, since each core on the i7 can do two, when i5 only does one.

My contribution. Haven't played TP since I finished it originally on my launch Wii. Replaying it again in Dolphin.

Wow. TP is really pretty in HD.
EDIT: Sorry to beat this thread's dead horse. Changed my comment.
I'll also link to some choice shots of Monster Hunter Tri once I've got Dolphin configured again. Stupid bloom offset shenanigans...

Well... the hotlink stopped working for some reason. But the pic is still there??
Hmm... can you guys recommend some better picture posting sites? I don't really do much of it, but even I know that imageshack now sucks ass.

Are you not using AA? I still don't think TP is a very pretty game regardless of res, but pulling it up from 480p really helps alleviate some of the muddiness.

It was only set to 2x. I could go higher, because my HTPC is quite beefy... but honestly in motion 2x seems to be more than enough at 1080p.

what build of dolphin are you using?
last time i tried TP it ran very poorly.

Whoa...

I never even thought of an HTPC for this. That's genius...

How quickly are new games made "Dolphin-playable"?

I would love to play Skyward Sword in HD when it comes out.

I think it depends on the game. I'm pretty sure people were posting near-perfect screenshots of Metroid Other-M in here the day it came out.

Games typically just work as they come out, every new release doesn't require something to be updated in a new build for it to suddenly start working.

Can't be a standard HTPC though, with a low power CPU and onboard GPU. I'm running an i5 sandybridge and an ATI 5850 with 8GB of ram. Mind you it's still pretty quiet, even when it's overclocked.

So what's the best way of playing Gamecube games with this? Is there a good way to get a Wavebird connected to Dolphin, or what? I really want to buy Sunshine if I can play it properly, since I've never played it before and recently gotten back into Mario 64.

wavebirds i don't know about.. but gamecube wired controllers need a pricey custom made adapter...

and this is from the OP of the thread btw(its what I use):

- Xbox 360 controller (Recommended): works great with the emulator as a GC pad replacement.

So, I have Code Veronica, but I can't get past the corrupted memory card.

I'm on the Mac version, and apparently the keyboard won't work? I read a post from long ago this was the case, but I can't find any recent information on it. Sadly, I gave away my wireless receiver to use my 360 controller, and here I was thinking the Play n Charge would work.

How would that work? How would the buttons match up?

I'm planning on using a PS3 remote via bluetooth. I couldn't find that wireless adapter for 360 on PC.

x360 pad works very well as gamecube pad replacement. I use the wired version, since I bought it just for emulation - I don't have a x360 console.

Heads up: I've tried Killer7 again on a more recent build, namely r7060 (64bit) and with the LLE plugin.

On a 3ghz Phenom quad core, it runs fullspeed and without sound or music issues. No desyncing during cutscenes, no background music dropping after a few seconds. You can shoot enemies just fine if you set Copy to Texture.

I've only ran into some issues so far, but they are not a hindrance:
- You occassionally get stuck in a reload animation. It usually triggers after entering a new room or after a cutscene. It only lasts a second or two.
- When shooting the wings off the first boss, you might get an error message and a crash. There might be other ways around it, but I changed the graphics plugin to OpenGL and disabled CPU Access. Now you can shoot the wings, BUT the speed is going to drop to near zero. Just wait it out and let it finish. You have to do this again in the scene right after the boss battle. Speeds normalize again once all of the feathers are gone. It only takes a few extra minutes to get through these sequences.
- Like the above one, on floor seven of the Union Hotel. There's a lot of flower petals on the ground. You can get through this, but the speed is going to drop to rock bottom. Took me over half an hour to do this. Luckily, there's no heaven smiles on this floor and it's very straightforward. I advise you to equip the Wind Ring before taking the elevator up to this floor.

Played from start to finish.

This guy sells GC/N64 USB adapters at a pretty reasonable price (well, cheaper than an X360 pad at least): http://www.raphnet-tech.com/products/gc_n64_usb_adapters/index.php. Can anyone here vouch for their quality?

Well, I've always been kind of wry of using emulators because of bad experience with PS2 emulation...
But a friend lent me his Gamecube and I figured I'll try it, because it's pretty painful to me to play games on it. I was a little worried because my PC is slightly outdated now (Q6600, 4870HD, 4GB RAM built it a couple years back) but Wind Waker runs pretty damn smoothly! In 1080p I get some slight slow downs now and then, but nothing too bad. Playing this game is like sex now.
I hate the thumb sticks on my Logitech pad though... I have a 360, but my controllers are wireless, guess I'll have to buy a new pad?

I want to try this on my laptop as well, I didn't but it as a gaming laptop though, so I don't know how it'll fair: Core i5 430m, 4GB RAM, Mobility 5470HD. Would I get reasonable performance?

Can't wait for PS Move server to come out... :)

My gamecube adapter wasn't that much, but I bought it in 2005. It doesn't support rumble though, and it does not work with the Wave Bird.

How does Little King Story work in Dolphin? It's the sort of game I think would benefit with savestates. Also, is there a way to transfer saves from your Wii to use in dolphin? I don't really feel like restarting LKS just to play it on Dolphin

You'd better upgrade that GPU. 540M would be bare minimum.

I think I heard it worked ok. For saves, there is a Wii Save Import option in Tools, I think just copy from the system and use the import option. I would of done it if I didn't loose all my saves a while back making it a moot point.

I'm rather surprised by the results I've got with this thing!

I'm running RE4:Wii at 1920x1080 with this PC:

Phenom II X2 555
ATI Radeon 4850 (Yes I know, it's old)

and so far, it's fullspeed. Just wondering, any tips/stuff to keep in mind?

Works great for me.

I was able to transfer my save over as well.
Just copy it to your SD card and then extract it through Dolphin.

I really wish I had a PC that could run this. Even though I can't I still find it interesting to see how these games look in HD and with different filters. I'd like to see some more games with the auto toon filter if anyone wants to post em ;)

I have the N64-to-Gamecube adaptor and it works fine. I'm not too fond of the wire/chip wrapped up in rubber and twisty ties thing, but it's just a guy so there's only so much he can do. It's not fragile from my experience, so that's good.

If you're looking for one without that, though, I just ordered a couple of these, and there's just one left over at Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000MJM516

I won't know how well it works, though, until it arrives next week.[/U]

edit: they work fine

Been having a lot of trouble with crashing and Wind Waker, mostly related to sound problems I think? I've had to use weird audio combinations and the Item Hang Fix to get it to work, and it still causes problems every so often. Any way to fix this in a more permanent way, or will I just have to keep switching solutions until I find something that works? Using the US version of Wind Waker.

Any performance benifet from running the games from an SSD?

Also the music cutting out in Super Mario Galaxy games is game breaking to me! The music is such a key element in those games. Looks very pretty though!

Tried Dead Space Extraction and it runs extremely slow during the opening cutscene that the dialogue is ahead of the mouth animation by about 10 seconds. Couldn't even wait long enough to get into the game.

REmake still looks super good, and Rebecca looks super cute adorable.

Resident Evil 0 looks quite good too although...

... it's a shame they randomly made Rebecca look much worse than in REmake.

For FE:PoR, no major graphical improvements IMO. PoR may be better.

Looks like all the stuff was pretty low quality (Which makes since, due to the possibility of there being tons of units on the screen, and zoomed out pretty far)

OK, now the big question :

can I fuck the shit out of Dolphin with a 560Ti and a i3-2100 ?

I don't know about "fuck the shit out of", but it should run fine. My old Pentium D 3.2 GHz with a 9800GTX+ could only run it at half-speed or less. My friend's Core 2 Duo 3.0 GHz / 8800 runs it fairly well. But even on my current rig of an i7 2600k @ 4.2 GHz / GTX 570 I still get slowdown here or there, depending on the game, build, and settings.

Funny this thread popped up today...I was looking into dolphin earlier today. My Wii has just been collecting dust as I have it hooked up to a 40 inch HDTV and it looks terrible.

I have Metroid Prime trilogy but I have no idea how to back it up so I can play it on Dolphin.

Install the Homebrew Channel on your Wii and use USB Loader to rip your games to a hard drive.

IIRC, none of the Metroid Prime games are playable yet in Dolphin though.
