Pizza delivery boys and girls, beware! Pizza giant Domino’s has unveiled an autonomous pizza delivery robot that is being trialled in New Zealand.

On Friday the company unveiled the Domino’s Robotic Unit (DRU), and announced that the bot had already carried out its first successful pizza delivery on March 8. “DRU is an autonomous delivery vehicle and is set to take the world by storm,” the company wrote in a statement on its website.

The vehicle’s development started in 2015 and was pushed towards commercialisation by Domino’s Australia-based skunkworks DLab. According to a promotional video (embedded below), DRU uses software developed by the Australian military contractor Marathon, which manufactures autonomous robots with obstacle-avoidance capabilities.

The feature has been incorporated in DRU, which according to Domino’s can dodge hurdles thanks using on-board sensors. The autonomous four-wheeler is about one metre tall and contains two different compartments to keep beverages cool and pizzas (up to ten per robot) hot, which customers can unlock with an order-specific code. It can carry out a delivery within 20 kilometres from the store before needing a battery charge, and it is designed to move on both footpaths and roads.

It wouldn't work here near Glasgow. It would just get stolen.

I feel like this could work in some countries, but in the US this will be vandalized/stolen (along with the pizza) instantly. I mean, sure it'll have an onboard GPS and camera to figure out what happened, but still

It just occured to me that robots will finally dismantle tipping culture.

That single positive outweighs every negative automation brings about.

I'd definitely tip those robots. If I don't, I know they'll be remember and make to kill me first in the eventual skynet-like future.

This and the other pizza thread pretty much sealed the deal for pizza tonight. Too bad we don't have this yet. It's interesting to see fast food joints try to embrace more and more tech

Now what's the next step in your master plan?
The US version will come with armor plating, tank treads, and built in defense systems. Also will come with snarky voice... or maybe Morgan Freemon will voice it as to sooth anyone it meets.

I doubt it would last that long anywhere. Anyone who sees it is going to be thinking 'Free pizza and a free robot!'. I'm sure it has security methods like cameras installed and obviously has GPS to locate it if stolen.

It would need too. People here are barbaric. Americans would set it ablaze within minutes.

Looking for meaning in GAF
It's surprisingly cute. Probably totally intentional on the part of its designers.

This would definitely work in nicer countries but it would be defaced to shit if it was in the US in true "this is why we can't have nice things" style. Send it to a house and it would come back covered in graffiti and worse.

No chance this thing goes mainstream. It would be vandalized day one in most cities, and likely destroyed in its first month.
