I do wonder if he plays games. There’s that part of me that thinks he had some passion for games since he made his fortune with them. The other part says it was just a job, a business opportunity he succeeded in. It could go either way with these corporate people. Even the gaming history books said Bobby Kotick didn’t play games, but he wanted to fund their development. It’s a weird world for sure.

I don't know man. While some of his decisions were questionable, he wasn't the one that killed the brand. Xbone did ok-ish. Who knows what would have happened if he had more time on his hands.

Don Matrick pretty much killed the Xbox brand. The presentation of the XBone, the TV focus, the bundled kinect, the hardware specs. He failed miserably on every thing.
That's why he was booted soon after and then MS managed to course correct for the rest of the generation. If he had stayed with MS and kept course, the Xbox brand would be dead by now.

Not worse than Mattrick.
Don has real history in gaming prior to Xbox that he should still garner respect for IMO. Was part of the company that developed the the full 3D games series (rendering on a 80286 PC 1MB with hercules 2 shades to VGA) 4D Sports (Driving, Boxing and Tennis).

Even recently we saw in DF John's retro Saturn faceoff that Atari's Hard Drivin arcade was the one to beat, and yet 4D Sports Driving(Stunts in the US) was out a year and half later on PC with a full on track editor, so his contribution to the early days of the industry should cut him some slack IMO to offset his time at Xbox.

That doesn't change the fact that his leadership was a disaster for Xbox.

But I'd argue his earlier contribution to gaming was more significant than anything that an internal Xbox team has created in house. As it was cutting edge and needed talent to ship those games for the market with the hardware of the time.
