Due to the two extremely successful Ip Man <葉問 > movies, a third installment was frequently rumored to be in the works. It was announced yesterday that Donnie Yen (甄子丹) will return for Ip 3, which will focus on the story between Ip Man and his disciple, Bruce Lee. Ip 3 will be filmed in 3D format at the end of the year!

Feel the Power of Wing Chun in 3D!

In the beginning of 2012, producer Raymond Wong (黃百鳴) consulted with the original cast and crew of the Ip Man franchise on how to make the third movie more compelling. The production crew decided the answer would be 3D. This will give audiences a more thrilling experience and magnify the power of the Wing Chun martial arts style. Mr. Wong stated, “3D will add more dimension to the action scenes. Since the movie will be filmed in 3D format, the production costs will be higher than the first two Ip Man movies.”

Featuring Bruce Lee’s Story

Ip Man 3 will focus on the relationship between Ip Man and his most famous disciple, Bruce Lee. The scriptwriter for Ip Man 3 was Raymond Wong’s son, Edmond Wong (黄子桓). The story for Ip Man 3 was still being conceptualized, but Edmond revealed that it will follow a young Bruce Lee training under the grandmaster.

The actor to play Bruce Lee has not been determined yet. Edmond Wong said, “Perhaps, we may cast an overseas actor. Actors who have played Bruce Lee in past films were Aarif Lee (李治廷) and Danny Chan (陈国坤). However, they may be too old to play a 16-year-old Bruce Lee. We will have to wait for director Wilson Yip (叶伟信) to decide.” Edmond added that Ip Man will remain as the central character in the Ip Man 3.

Donnie Yen has already expressed interest in filming Ip Man 3. Donnie’s public relations representative, Ms. Cheung, stated, “Donnie anticipates working on the movie. He had preliminary discussions with Raymond Wong already. Since Donnie did not see the script yet, he is not clear on the details of the story.”

Since the script was currently under development, Raymond Wong indicated that it was not clear as to whether the movie will feature Ip Man in his old age. Ip Man 3 will start filming at the end of 2012

Author Notes - Jayne: Really looking forward to Ip Man 3 in 3D! I will pay the extra $5 to see it in 3D. Feel the power of Wing Chun! I hope they find a good actor to play Bruce Lee! Ip 3 may be the most promising among the trilogy!

Judging from the comments, you'd think Donnie Yen treats his co-workers with love and care that only Steven Segal can provide, wonder if there's fire to this smoke...

I thought the two previous installments were brilliant, I only expected it to go downhill after the first one, but to my surprise the second one was better! Unbelievable, more Donnie Yen is needed in the West, it's a shame he isn't a household name over here; with Jackie Chan getting older, we may need a new buddy cop flic in the mix.

That reminds me, Rush Hour 4 is already underway. Yes, producer Arthur Sarkissian has officially confirmed production:

”I am working on ‘Rush Hour 4′ right now with Chris Tucker and Jackie Chan,” he said. “I’m trying to do it closer to how I did ‘Rush Hour 1′, more down to earth, more gritty, introduce two new characters and make it real, the way the first one was.”

Sarkissian says the new production will be ”more gritty” in a similar way to the franchise’s 1998 debut, which saw the pair portray cops who team up to retrieve a kidnapped child.

One of the new characters being courted is Oscar-winner Octavia Spencer to play the wife of Chan’s alter-ego Lee.

”Maybe Chris is now married, maybe Jackie is married to Octavia Spencer, I don’t know,” he said. “Married to Chris’s cousin, they live in Shanghai, Chris goes out to visit them. I don’t know, I want something energetic. Why not? If it’s good, script is good you’ll get anybody.”

Sarkissian is not completely sure what the film’s storyline will be, the producer admits he ”was not happy” with the third installment, which saw Lee and Carter (Chris) head to Paris to protect a French woman with a good knowledge of Triad secret leaders.

He told CraveOnline: “I thought 1 and 2 were very good. I think 3 got out of hand a little bit. It’s not a matter of just bringing them back to do another segment of that or a sequel to it by putting them in another city and having them bicker. I don’t want that. I want something new.”

I would love for the cast to return to Hong Kong, I myself find that if there is an introduction of 2 new substantial characters, why not have Donnie Yen join the crew?

If you've seen the crime cop action-packed flick set in a 1996 Hong Kong (Flash Point), you'll easily know what why I want this to happen.

Jackie getting tied down? I smell another hostage situation, unless Octavia Spencer can kick butt. Wait a sec, she isn't even on board yet, only a potential candidate. Will this Oscar winning actress be the one to turn around a sunken franchise?

Good for the cast to realize that the third installment was monkey dung, well, to me it was. I'm totally glad this is happening now, I remember a few months ago, like friken April 2012, Jackie was asked when he would do Rush Hour 4, and he said when he and Chris Tucker were advanced in age....

I don't know about you, but Chris Tucker is reportedly broke and fat, what gives?

How the hell do you blow 20 million dollars so fat... I mean so FAST?
Lucky for him, it's a big payday.

All I can hope for is Brett Ratner to stay the fuck away from the franchise.

Thoughts?

They could probably work "fat Chris Tucker" in to the script, heh.

I'm excited for Ip Man 3. The first two were excellent.

I think Lee is wearing a dashiki which is some traditional West African attire.
There has been a drought of martial arts movies, I hear Tony Jaa left his Buddhist monastery and gave up monkhood, he and his girlfriend are now expecting a baby, and he is working on a new film.

If anything, I'm worried about Chris' health, and them action scenes... ''Wipe your face, you bleedin''... No vaulting off rooftops for him. Yip Man, Donnie Yen, heavenly. I'm so going downtown for these flicks.

That Tucker pic is a few years old. He's slimmed down somewhat. He's not Friday skinny, but he could be ready for a movie in a month with a trainer.

Please lord let RH4 not be shit. Love the first 2, fuck #3.

Enjoyed the first 2 Ip Man movies, looking forward to the 3rd. I'm also a big Bruce Lee fan, I'm really interested in seeing the Bruce Lee story being told from this perspective. I'm also interested in seeing what direction the movie will go in. Will it still be a action movie with a main antagonist, or more a drama exploring the relationship of the two historic men?

I love the first two Rush Hour movies, hate thte third. Making another is worth it only to see Jackie Chan trash the series during promotions and talk about how he doesn't get why anyone likes them. He clearly gives zero fucks about his Hollywood movies and only does them for the paycheck.

Wait, Rush Hour 4? Did I miss an announcement/thread?

And LOL at fat Chris Tucker. I wonder if that will be a gag if he doesn't lose the weight.

My thoughts are you are crazy. Ip Man 1 is better than 2 without a doubt and I'm someone who actually enjoys the 2nd movie while most people say it was bad.

Did I miss something? Didn't Jackie Chan announce a couple months ago that Chinese Zodiac would be his last movie?

No, read the whole thread.
Today I was shocked when I woke up to read all the news coverage that I was retiring from doing Action movies.

I just want to let everyone know that I am not retiring from doing action movies. What I meant to say is that I need to do less of the life risking stunts on my movies. After all these years of doing so many stunts and breaking so many bones, I need to take better care of my body so I can keep working.

I will continue to do international action movies.

And I will keep improving my English :)

I love all of you!

Jackie

The relationship between Ip and Bruce is not that interesting to begin with anyway. Steve McQueen and Bruce....Now that's a movie they should do.

Ip Man was absolutely incredible but I personally didn't enjoy the second one. Still, I'll watch Ip Man 3 for the martial arts alone.

Yes!! Been waiting for this over 2 years now! Ip Man is probably the best martial art action film of this decade so far.

edit: make that 2 decades

It did go downhill though. I still enjoyed the movie (got nothing but love for Donnie) but the the whole thing was actually ridicoulous... especially that ultra fake fight with Sammo Hung in the beginning and that ultra-racist boxer.

yeah i didn't really like Ip Man 2 too much. it was basically a rehash of the first Ip Man. i hope part 3 is a little different.

Formerly worldrevolution. The only reason I am nice to anyone else is to avoid being banned.
Wait, wasn't Yen the one who didn't want to do a 3?

It's kinda crazy that Donnie Yen is still going. He looked middle aged in Iron Monkey and that was nearly 20 years ago!

They have been hyping the Bruce Lee connection shits in the last two film, and all we got was some text in the first film and some tiny scene in the last film. It would be a crime if the 3rd film still doesn't go into Bruce Lee relationship.

Ip Man 1 and Ip Man 2 are among my favorite martial arts movies. I can't wait for a third and will gladly give it a shot and see it in theaters if possible.

Also, it's odd that the OP shoehorned in some new Rush Hour 4 news. I never finished the first movie and never saw the sequels, but it's interesting to see Chris Tucker in a fuller state than I'm used to.

Wong is chairing the Berlin Film Festival jury in February, so hopefully that means he expects Grandmasters to be done by then.

I am 100% sure that Donnie Yen once said he would not do any more Ip Man movies.

I guess he has to "sell out". Not that I mind though, I am a Ip Man whore. :-D

Sucks about the whole 3-D thing though, seems like more emphasis is being placed on special effects this time around. One of the reasons I loved the first Ip Man so much is because the effects were subtle, and did not dominate the film at all. Hopefully they can maintain focus on the choreography.

Heh, finished the Kenji manga when I was a kid, never thought Li Shu Wen was actually a real person.

All of the masters in Kenji described are real apart from the main character, including Liu Yun Qiao and Su-Yu Chang. Theres even youtube video footage of both, lol.

a Liu Yun Qiao movie would be great too.
