You should be able to run the game at low 640x480 resolution with minimum detail and still get 20-30 fps. It's not a fast paced game that requires 60+.

heh, I got a Fujitsu laptop with (which is the only PC I'll have for the next 1-3 years in Japan):

16" screen
ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 with 64mb ram

So if you can't play Doom3 or HL2 decent with your 128mb card, I'll be the 3rd one fucked with my 64mb one :\

Also if you try to get Doom3 in Japan expect to be paying $80+ From what I remember last time I was there, PC game prices are insane >_<

The Mobility 9700(M11) isn't the equivalent of the desktop Radeon 9700 version. A desktop Radeon 9700 has 8 pixel pipeline, while a mobility 9700 has only 4 pixel pipeline. The 9700 is basically a higher clocked 9600 with few tweaks and enhancement. If you are going to upgrade, wait for the x800 mobility(there will be a x600 mobility but it is virtually identical to 9700).

Thanks, I'll just wait for the 9800 to become available for laptops then. I'm certainly in no hurry and have yet to play a PC game that even felt like it was getting a little choppy. But then again, Doom 3 may change that.

AMD Athlon 1 Ghz <---- Need to upgrade, but my motherboard sucks and I would need to flash it, and it would only allow up to 1.8 Ghz even if I decided to upgrade.

ATI Radeon 9500 non pro 128 mb Softmodded to 9800 pro, OCed, runs like a dream.

512 mb RAM

Lowest supported GPU is a Geforce 4 MX (worse than Geforce 3)

GF 4
GF FX (and higher)
ATI 8500s, 9000s and higher


It might not be a good time to upgrade. ATI is going to introduce the X800 GT which will take over the 399 range and the X800 PRO, X800 reg will hit 349-299 a and 299-249 respectively. This will lower the 9800 (128 mb 256bit bus) pro below the 199 mark it's at and the 9700 pro below the 149 mark it's at. Check pricewatch.

Even at those prices the 9700/9800 pros are a steal. And when the price drop comes into play, its practically a crime..

If you buy those expensive Alienware gaming laptops, you can upgrade the graphic cards relatively easily(edit: Actually, I am not sure about this, I know you can go from 9000 to 9600 to 9700, don't know about past that). The x800 should be available in a couple of months.... or you can go with x600 which is basically a mobility 9700, but is using a PCI-express bus instead of AGP.

I'm amazed they haven't released any new shots. The last couple are now several months old...and there are so few of them aswell. Does the PC Gamer review have new shots?

Yes, I mean within the flash site. They have about 12 screenshots for both PC and Xbox. Only a couple looked new to me for PC though.
