Doom's multiplayer mode, which is publicly playable for the first time at QuakeCon 2015, is lightning fast — just not in the way that you might be used to.

My first round of the game's competitive mode was — appropriately enough — a 6-minute 6-on-6 Deathmatch, although time felt like it elapsed far faster than that. The QuakeCon demo offers a fairly small sliver of the game's multiplayer component. But it gave an idea of what Doom's doing to set itself apart from the modern shooter herd, and how it's been adapted from its decades-old roots.

Before the match even began, each player was able to customize their loadouts, equipping two weapons from a list of six — mostly mainstays like the Plasma Gun, Rocket Launcher and Super Shotgun. Loadouts also included an Equipment slot, though only two options, a Frag Grenade and Personal Teleporter, were available there. Three preset loadouts were also available, and players were able to swap between them at will after each death.

"For a player who's only played Call of Duty — I hope they pick it up, and have a fresh, exhilarating experience that maybe they haven't had before," Stratton said. "If it's someone who's only played Doom and Quake, I think they'll also feel like this is something familiar, but there's a lot — some of which we're not talking about yet — there's a lot of stuff there that makes it even more addictive, or has new components they haven't seen in a game from us before."

Those components will include some form of progression element for Doom's multiplayer modes, although Stratton didn't go into detail about what kind of unlocks players can shoot for.

Forced ADS?
What's the TTK?
Can we only equip two guns for multiplayer? Does that restriction carry over to the single player as well?

I think it's probably similar to what they introduced to Quake Live.

hopefully. Having a hard time fighting that knee jerk reaction of "ewww" with the two weapon/loadout deal.

I'm thinking I'm going to ignore this one until it comes out and keep my fingers crossed it surprises me. I don't want to get my hopes up.

2 guns!!

I'm really looking forward to this game. Since they have mods on consoles, people can just play on servers with weapon pickups only. As long as they have server browsers and modded content is only playable in private matches, we can do whatever we want.

Getting a wave of ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh after reading this.

I don't know what they mean by fast either, like relative to modern shooters? Or relative to Quake 3?

There was a weapon wheel in the single player gameplay demo, so I'd assume not.
As far as TTK,
Not once during my match was I one-shot-killed by an enemy that I couldn't see. When an enemy and I turned a corner and saw each other, the encounter wasn't given to the first player to pull the trigger; it went to the most mobile, craftiest player. Soldiers on Doom's battlefield move faster than the soldiers on other shooters' battlefield, but in a lot of ways, they're a lot more survivable.

I hate how every fps impression these days has to name check call of duty . Sounds like this will have unlocks , xp , upgrades and all that stuff .

I was excited by the initial doom reveal but they are clearing trying to bring in the call of duty audience .

I would be disappointed if this game was either an exact copy of old-school shooters or a COD clone. It seems to combine both elements, including most of the important aspects of those classic id games, so I'm optimistic.

For example, the multiplayer has loadouts and unlocks, but it's also fast-paced and has more powerful weapons and items to pick up. Not to mention SnapMap allows for the fans to make whatever kind of multiplayer they want. Seems like a good mix.

This is exactly what we need, another multiplayer shooter that takes its cues from CoD. We sure don't have enough of those.

It's 100% clear they want the CoD crowd.

Finally, Doom gets loadouts, equipment slots, and a progression system. All those things that Doom definitely totally needed.

I don't know why he mentioned quake players too. Old school fps were about controlling weapon spawns and armor and knowing where to engage and hearing what enemies picked up through sound pickups.

All that is thrown out the window, just pick two weapons and go at it.

given the sales of the COD games....can't really blame them chasing that crowd..

still, really hope that the speed of the mp will be on par with the past doom games at least....

I wasn't too thrilled about what they showed off at E3, but I was optimistic, now I don't know. I hope this loadouts thing isn't mandatory and can be swapped off in favor of weapon spawns.

Chasing that crowd 2015 though? Developers/publishers have spent the better part of a decade chasing after the mythical CoD crowd and so few have ever come close to siphoning even a fraction of that playerbase. It feels so antiquated these days, I thought developers moved on.

Agreed!

CoD players play CoD. They are not building communities in clone games.

Stick to your roots DOOM. For fucks sakes that would feel fresh in the sea of "CoD clones".

Loadouts?!

Why are people acting like "choose two starting weapons from a small pool that everyone has equal access to" makes the game a literal CoD clone? Sure it's not ideal, but it's a far cry from having some big unlock ladder and a dozen slots for perks, attachments, killstreaks, etc. (I'm assuming "some form of progression" doesn't mean that.)

I get that it's not PURE CLASSIC DOOM, but nothing we've seen about this game has been. I'm just hopeful that it'll be good in its own way that carries on at least some of the spirit of the originals.

Not a fan of the loadouts either. Loved the idea of racing to weapon spawns and controlling those areas. Even if they wanted to do a "loadout", why put the plasma gun and rocket launcher in there? Those should be pick ups. I was hoping this would be a good throw back to the arena shooters of old. It's starting to look like it isn't going to be.

No shit? That's where the money is.

This is the type of approach I like for loadouts. A selection of basic starting weapons so that everyone can start with a type of weapon that works best for them with the more advanced weaponry available on the map.

EDIT: At least, that was my understanding at first. The other weapons are available as pick ups, right?

The MP could entirely be shit, but so much of this griping seems like an off read of the article.

Yes there are loadouts, but it was implied that there are better weapons, items, and power ups that spawn in the maps.

Chasing dat CoD crowd, smellin' like 343 there eh, eh?

Would be nice to have a real Doom mode, but I'll wisely not hold my breath on that.

I really don't like loadouts at all. I know why it's done to give meaningful choice but it's a false illusion in alot of cases. There is there is good chance there is a small set of most effective loadouts might as well have a set classes at that point.

If this is the case, I will humbly reserve judgment until more info is released.

Please remove the piss filter in hell though.

All I needed to know.

Yeah this looks just like COD.

People keep missing the forest from the trees with this game. The multiplayer here is a fast-paced arena shooter with no aiming down the sites, no taking cover/camping, weapon and item pickups, map editing, etc. That makes it much different than COD, even if it contains some similar features.

That looks around UT3 speed. Which got flak for being slower than all the other UTs (which were already slower than doom/quake). Obviously concessions need to be made for consoles but the classic doom crowd will be disappointed at the speed if that's max movespeed.

People whining about load outs. Would you prefer it has loadouts and a healthy online base for a while or no loadouts and a dead multiplayer within 3 years?

what if the choice is actually between loadouts and a dead userbase within a year or no loadouts and a dead userbase within a year?
