Doom's MP - mixes modern & retro, still fast as hell [Polygon]

Everyone realizes there are going to be custom game modes as well as completely new ones created by other players with the mod tools, right?

I can almost guarantee you there's going to be some sort of classic MP modes available right when it launches. If not by id themselves, it'll come from modders.

The quotes in the OP are almost definitely talking about the primary MP game modes, which we still know very little about.

Was going to post something similar. It sounds like the whole SnapMap utility will let players change up the rules however they like. I had no idea that people disliked the concept of loadouts so much.

Most people aren't even reading the article it seems. They're seeing the word loadout and just posting some random shit about how Doom is ruined and publishers are trying to appeal to the CoD crowed. This thread is pretty embarrassing.

Edit: See below, perfect example.

"For a player who's only played Call of Duty — I hope they pick it up, and have a fresh, exhilarating experience that maybe they haven't had before," Stratton said. "If it's someone who's only played Doom and Quake, I think they'll also feel like this is something familiar, but

Loadouts, 2 weapons, unlocks.

It's 100% clear they want the CoD crowd.

Aaand i am out...i only play CoD because it is CoD. You cannot get these crowds to play your game. This MP section will be dead in less than a few months.

This is the type of approach I like for loadouts. A selection of basic starting weapons so that everyone can start with a type of weapon that works best for them with the more advanced weaponry available on the map.

EDIT: At least, that was my understanding at first. The other weapons are available as pick ups, right?

This would be a good system.

Before the match even began, each player was able to customize their loadouts, equipping two weapons from a list of six — mostly mainstays like the Plasma Gun, Rocket Launcher and Super Shotgun. Loadouts also included an Equipment slot, though only two options, a Frag Grenade and Personal Teleporter, were available there. Three preset loadouts were also available, and players were able to swap between them at will after each death.

OH COME THE FUCK ON.

Did no one learn anything from the disaster Halo Reach and 4 were MP wise? Talk about killing your MP before it even has a chance to draw players in....

I do wonder about the thought process behind the development. I can't fault them for chasing the COD crowd since there's a lot of money to be made there. However, they should know that is not what the hardcore Doom fans want. So sure, make the game in a way that can attract the COD crowd how they are doing now but why not also add a separate matchmaking or mode or whatever that sticks to the classic rules so that everyone is pleased? Better a fragmented online community than no community at all.

Reading more replies it seems like there are custom games. Just hope those aren't relegated to private lobbies and can actually be played through matchmaking.

What? Are you serious? So having an equipment slot in Doom will automatically be terrible because you didn't like it in Halo? This catastrophizing and nit-picking is boring and pointless, we won't know if it's fun until we see more maps, game modes, and weapons. You know, the stuff that actually matters?

I'm just going to post this piece here in case people didn't bother to read the entire article. There's still a lot they're not talking about so just chill out until we see more.

According to executive producer Marty Stratton, there's much more to the multiplayer experience of Doom — most of which hasn't been announced yet.

"There's a lot of stuff, actually, that we're not going into too much detail about yet, because we have a while before we're coming out," Stratton said. "There's whole components of multiplayer that aren't represented in this pre-alpha here at QuakeCon."

"For a player who's only played Call of Duty — I hope they pick it up, and have a fresh, exhilarating experience that maybe they haven't had before," Stratton said. "If it's someone who's only played Doom and Quake, I think they'll also feel like this is something familiar, but there's a lot — some of which we're not talking about yet — there's a lot of stuff there that makes it even more addictive, or has new components they haven't seen in a game from us before."

Those components will include some form of progression element for Doom's multiplayer modes, although Stratton didn't go into detail about what kind of unlocks players can shoot for.

Just got done playing, it's really fun and doesn't really play like any AAA shooter currently out. There are executions in MP, same red glow gives it away. I went rocket launcher and shotty, served me well. Played on the winners stage and went 22-14, 2nd overall in the game.

Not really a great example since the only reason it didnt die off was valve added weapon skins.

No. CSGO was on the rise and already really popular before the Arms Race update. So tired of this false narrative that CSGO was dying before skins. The biggest jump in playerbase it has ever gotten was because of a popular tournament and price drop, not skins.

Also, CSGO's lack of progression and unlocks and keeping its 'loot' aspect to cosmetic-only skins is a great example of how you don't need that stuff to make a popular shooter.

Eh, not fond of the executions. How was the TTK? So, no ADS then? Sizes of the maps? Visibility/clarity? etc :p

Awesome. So,

- Strafe jumping, circle strafes etc?
- Speed in the video is that walking or running (is there a run speed)?
- How's the spread on the shotgun from a distance?
- Are there any hit sounds?
- Rocket jumps?

For all you guys jumping on the boycott bandwagon just by reading the word loadout - do you really think they are gonna release this game without a classic DM game mode?

Eh. This sounds fine. I have a really hard time thinking there should be any specific way to approach a series that has had multiplayer as barebones and
bad
as Doom's.

I hate how every fps impression these days has to name check call of duty . Sounds like this will have unlocks , xp , upgrades and all that stuff .

I was excited by the initial doom reveal but they are clearing trying to bring in the call of duty audience .

The name of the game is still profit, as they're still a business first, so trying to attract a large audience - with Call of Duty being console king - isn't inherently bad; Having a bigger base for a game you want to play is a good thing if handled well. I have confidence this can be handled well.

They are fun, but this is coming from someone who loves Gears of War. I think executions just happen if you melee someone in the red glow. They should make them like Halo assassination animations, so you have to hold the melee button down to get it. TTK is noticeably longer than Halo 4's, but not hugely so. It's very fast paced, but I wouldn't call it a twitch shooter. If a bad player gets the jump on you, you can still swing it around. That said, you can get into some pretty great player duels. There is ADS, I never used it, did very well anyways. Someone on my team mentioned a battle rifle(Halo) type gun burst normal fire, was one shot ADS. Like Right Lifle from Halo 4 I guess. Most weapons here didnt have an alt fire, so ADS I dont think is critical to playing. We only got to play on one map, it played well for the 6v6 TDM we were playing. Plenty of different paths, even hidden ones I only discovered after my first time playing. It had a good flow as well, you quickly could memorize how to play each area in the map. The Demon spawn powerup was appropriately placed in an open spot for teams to fight over. While the rail gun and huge armor pack were a little harder to find. Map never felt too crowded, even when all the player converged. Visibility seems great, can see players across the map just fine.

-Not sure on strafe jumping, circle strafe yes
-No sprint button, movement speed is pretty quick, but feels great
-Shotgun loses damage pretty quickly after a distance. I would shoot players too far and get like 14 damage on them. It's pretty useful in close quarters, maybe a very slight buff would help.
-Yes

Sounds like that person wrote it from the perspective of someone who only plays Halo and CoD. Oh god...its sooooo fast....soooo fast. Ridiculous.

My exact thought he never played either UT99 or Quake 3. And also those buzzwords from every website is not really helping either.

To those going "stopped reading", Jesus Christ you people are ridiculous.

How can you judge an entire game that you have never played, that isn't going to be out for months, based on the word "loadout".

Just know that you are the reason developers think gamers are a bunch of pricks.

Personally I'm going to wait for proper reviews and impressions, or perhaps a hands-on experience, before I write the whole game off, because what I've seen so far looks a lot better than Doom 3.

Oi, thanks for the info! Was dying for some, especially since people have actually been playing it now, so many thanks :)

The one link posted above mentioned that the rail had a 'zoomed charge', I don't know what that means, but in general, did you ever have to use zoom with any gun?

How were the rockets by the way, are they fast enough for air rockets?

Oh and what about the assault rifle? It seems very weak from the demo, could you still do some damage with it in MP?

Wow who let ReactionaryGAF into this thread. Loadouts doesn't mean that they're enforced in all MP modes nor does it automatically dismiss anything else it could have going for it like awesome gameplay.

I'm actually liking what I hear after reading Surface of Me's impressions. Similarly to Halo, it seems like they are trying to find a good balance between arena shooter and mainstream player.

Fast movement, no ADS requirements, double jumping, higher TTK. Seems like the groundwork is there for some depth.

I always come back to Titanfall and what a missed opportunity that was from a design perspective. Respawn creates this interesting movement system and then forces ADS to go after the COD crowd.
