Game is too much of a timesink (honestly reminds me when I raiding in WoW, not like way back but not recent since I don't play anymore) and its honestly too slow paced for my taste.

Maybe I randomly try another character.

Yeah, when you go into games, you need to expect a 45 minute game, and plan for it to go for an hour if you have someplace to go.

Yeah want to try him out again. He's pretty fun and with scepter (or whatever that thing is called) he's even more fun!

Definitely look to spend from 40-70 minutes. My longest was like 71 minutes, and it was amazing. We were barely getting ahead, and at one point they started slaughtering us. Then we got a hold of ourselves and won!!

Is there a place that will teach me what items are best for each hero and some general item strategies? I have about 15 games under my belt now and I understand the dynamics of lanes, gaining experience and fighting other hero's but I still have no idea what items are best for the character I'm playing other than to buy items that increase my hero's main stat.

Probably, but the ring of protection isn't available in the side shop, so that's why most buy it straight away and then get the mask from the side shop to complete basi.

Ever since the servers went down today, the game doesn't do anything after I click "Find Game". Same thing happens in parties, as the party leader can't find a game with me in it. I've verified integrity, deleted client_registry, restarted my PC and router but still nothing works :/ What else can I do other than reinstall the whole thing?

edit: wow I uninstalled / reinstalled dota and it still won't work...

go create a practice game and see if that works

Yeah, most likely a bunch of accounts are thought to still be in game but aren't.

Played a few matches as Lich today, and I have to ask is there a good counter to him? I haven't played the original Dota in forever, and was admittedly not very good to begin with, but as Lich I was absolutely wrecking. His laning is great, and with the mana regen from sacrifice I was able constantly harass with frost blast. Then when it came down to team fights I would net a few kills going in with my ult (which became even more laughable once I was able to build a scepter), drop shields on my teammates when needed, and frost blast anyone trying to get away. What am I missing here? How do you break this guy?

You gank him. He is squishy and has no escape mechanism. Also build pipe.
