Dota 2 Beta Thread: [Brewmaster]

So I just got into the beta. Never played Dota really but I'm familiar with league. The game is awesome but it has the same rage antics as league does. The first match I played online everyone was helpful and we did well. The second match we weren't even losing so bad it was like 4 kills to 6 and 2 guys rage quit. I wish I was given invites to get my friends to play with me :/

All I want to say is, FUCK AM.

There.

Only 1 game in his wishlist, so sad

I concur.[/QUOTE]

I'm confused though. He was actually playing DOTA2 and was in the NeoGAF channel. How is this posible? Is he just banned from playing but can hang in channels? Also why does his profile have 0 playtime? And it says he owns DOTA2?

Gotta love it when a pusher gets cocky (or desperate). He attempted to TP in on a creep wave I was farming (I was an Ancient Apparation) to kill me. 2 out of 3 times, he got himself killed doing this (I was naturally happy to cold feet and Euls him in place). The 2nd time, he bought back immediately and jumped up to our top rax. And then promptly died.

Always like to watch a Night Stalker and Pugna teamed together to take on Antimage, that silence, decrepify, the nukes and the lifedrain.

The games tonight were simply draining. Even though we won the last one, it was by the skin on our teeth and one of the guys on our team was a huge asshole. Had a pretty good support VS though.

You may be able to pop it off during a gank. The damage scales (1+x)*(30+10x) per level, and is given to each hero. So not accounting for resistances, it would be 80 at 1, 150 at 2, 240 at 3, and 350 at 4, so it scales pretty well. It just has a 140 mana cost, and a fairly long cool down.

Finally got my first win. went 5/1/12 as tidehunter.

I really like playing tidehunter support with a decent ranged carry. Easy to zone off competing melee carries and harass them back.

Have a question though: Is it normal to have terrible sustain even with magic wand or am I just using gush too much?

I've been getting perseverance instead of blink dagger because I find it keeps me in the fights more so I'm more useful. Plus nothing is worse than having your cooldowns ready but no mana to use them when a fight breaks out.

I think I like doing that anyway because the range on ravage means you don't really need blink dagger at the level I play on. Also can disassemble the perseverance to build a vanguard late game if you get farm.

Tidehunter has pretty big mana problems. You have to be very stingy with his skills. Never use Gush to harass (unless you have instant resupply like a teammate with arcane boots), Anchor Smash is fairly cheap so its use can be more flexible.

As for skipping the blink dagger: it depends. If you're passing on it, don't skip getting a level of Kraken Shell early (the status effect purge could mean the difference between getting a Ravage off or not, especially if they have chain stuns at their disposal). You need to get tanky as well, both so that Kraken Shell will proc further from low health, and also so that you're more able to walk into an optimal Ravage position.

Yeah I try not to use gush to harass most of the time.. Still end up low on mana at the worst times.

Also playing against a team with a Skeleton King, a Lifestealer, and an Ursa is about the worst thing ever. They were all basically impossible to kill. Doesn't help that Ursa has such an easy time soloing roshan that he basically had perma aegis, and skeleton king has his ult, so even when we killed them, they didn't die. :P

As Tidehunter landing your Ult is the most important thing, so make a Blink Dagger every game.

So a few of my friends (all of which were LoL players, really wanting to get into Dota 2) got in recently and I was teaching them what is different about this game versus what they were accustomed to in LoL. They all ended up liking Dota 2 better, and don't plan on going back to LoL ever again.

Something interesting I noticed though is that the single concept they all struggled the most with was the courier. For those that don't know, in LoL there is no courier, and you have a free teleport spell called "Recall" that teleports you back to the game's fountain equivalent. You cannot buy items away from the shop, there is no lane shop, and no secret shop. They were thinking they always had to run back to the fountain all the time. I briefly explained the courier to them and they were still confused on how to use it. One game, one of them was playing Pugna, so he was the best choice to buy the courier for our team, and he didn't realize he had to actually deploy it once he bought it, but I explained that to him before he left the fountain, so he did it.

I'm thinking I'm going to make a YouTube video to completely explain the courier, and hopefully it will get around to new players in Dota 2. It took my friends a long time to all grasp the concept of the courier, and what each of it's abilities do.

Had a pretty good game today, considering it was my ~12th or so match.

http://cloud.steampowered.com/ugc/649875346853777786/C160E98E05CBE9C11B1392D6764E242B6C7F6033/

The really great thing was that Zeus and Balanar both disconnected fairly early on, so it was a 3v5 fight for most of the match. And we were getting pounded badly, we lost all our towers earlier than the other team and at one point they were fighting inside our base. We were doing better than them in hero fights but they were still pushing until we started controlling the abandoned heroes as well. So if any one of us would die, we'd take control of one of the two heroes spare. A couple of times we even got kills by getting Zeus to use his global damage ultimate :P. But then we started a mid push and starting from the river tower, we went all the way into their base and wiped them out in one go! They'd keep coming at us but somehow we clicked and kept killing them over and over until it was finished.

The game is pretty great but I'm a little sad that the toxic community from Dota/HON/LoL has found their way here too. I keep getting insults and abuses for being a newbie... not that it bothers me a whole lot but I had somehow expected this game to be different, and I'm not sure why. And about 80-90% of my games end with someone leaving, which sucks but what can you do.

Might wanna make sure you take into account the new 6.73 courier changes that will probably be added.

I didn't know about bots. I only found out by being cussed at.

I never played before and the community is putting me off.

You know there is a thread on this on the Dev forums. I swear these are honest to god responces:

"Stop crying because someone called you nerd or bad."
"NUBS crying muahayhahhahaahahahahahahahah FLAME ON!"
"DotA w/o trash talk is trash. The DotA community is one of the reasons why people even play DotA."

Just mute then report. Earn them a global mute.

How do I mute? Honest question. Should I try out LoL than play DOTA 2? I know they aren't really the same.

LoL won't be any better all mobas have the same dog shit communities. When you open the scoreboard there is a small little speaker icon next to their name. Click that and you don't see anything they type. After that click their name > report job done. :)

I actually think LoL has a slightly friendlier beginning community. When I first played I forgot to buy items and people suggested me stuff to buy and once I tried out a hero and sucked someone actually offered to give me tips after the game. I think it helps having the level matchmaking. I think players stayed alot more silent. Sure people can smurf but the low levels should still be pretty beginner level.

The game itself is alot noob friendlier too.

Humm I will figure out how to bring up scoreboard. Does this also stop text? Just spent time in LoL. It helps it has a tutorial. Only played Human VS PC after the tutorial.

Except being the same genre the game has alot of different mechanics. You will actually have alot more difficulty playing Dota after LoL.

But I wasn't really learning anything in DOTA 2 atm..besides the fact that I died 8 times in 7 minutes and totally gave the upper hand to the opposing team.

If you are not feeling comfortable in-game, play bots matches for a bit.

A few things to keep in mind:

Get your map awareness sorted out

Understand how the stats work

Get a feel for the item shops

Learn how to properly last hit and deny

Even if you are not a support, learning where to ward is still really important.

Runes spawn every 2 minutes, creeps spawn every 1.

Once you feel better with these, start weening yourself back into real games. Mistakes I often see new players do are:

Pick hard carries and have no idea how to farm

Auto attack everything and push his/her lane out too much

Some other things that could ease the game a bit for you would be to find some hero guides, hop in a bot match, and alter the suggested items list to suit the guide. Often times the Suggested Items list in-game isn't very accurate with what you should be getting as that toon, so taking the time to fix that would be a good idea.

Edit: Sticking with an archetype might also help out. If you want to be an initiator, stick with it and learn your role. Know when you need to go in and not chicken out. If you want to support, understand that you support. Wards, donkey, dusts, etc etc. Supports needs to learn to always use these items when needed. Gankers and carries are pretty self explanatory.

I still think Arcane boots is the way to go on Tide, the 250+ mana and effective +2MP/Sec is really good.

I also need to find a a list of slang and meanings.

I feel really old all of a sudden haha!

Common ones are:

ss which means missing

b which means back (as in get back)

care which means to get back as well

and uhh, I feel like I'm missing one or two other big ones

I prefer treads on him, personally. He needs to be big enough to eat a walrus!

also "re" which means if i called missing earlier, they have returned to lane

i also feel it's worth mentioning pinging, in which the meaning is most always contextual. if it is a ping on an enemy and a teammate is waiting in the forest - he prob wants to gank.
if it's a ping on an enemy that is visible via wards and there is no one nearby, it probably means be aware or careful.

Sort of. More specifically it means be aware and be ready to run at a moments notice. It doesn't necessarily mean "run away now" like b does.

Yeah, but the majority of time people say it, is because someone is pushing too far up a lane and they should probably head back 'till we know where everyone is.

Which practically means "get the fuck out before you get ganked"
