Doug Bowser - "some people...may not be able to afford [the Switch 2's] price point. That's why we wanted to make the other Switch platforms available

They should, I can't help but feel that they set this up themselves with Furukawa (in prior financial briefings/interviews) talking about how their customers expect affordability and that they'll take 'this' and 'that' into consideration when thinking about pricing.

Then we get a $450 system, $80 games, $80 controllers, and $10 freeware games..

Probably, even in a worst case scenario I think it'll sell a lot. I'll be there day 1 at least!
Software sells hardware. By the time they release the next 3D Mario, Zelda and Smash Bros all of this nonsense talk and misinformation about the dumbest of issues will be a thing of the past

Not so much as a whisper of any of those though. They could be a couple of years away, and I'd be surprised if they ever do another Smash Bros.

Abandoning that giant Switch 1 userbase is going to be tough, so I expect we'll see a lot more Switch 1 games with add-on enhancements than we will exclusive Switch 2 games.

I definitely think they will and I also think Mario Kart World Vs. Mario Kart 8 might be indicative of the approach they'll take with it, i.e. a major overhaul/evolution of what we're used to.

This is great for 2 reasons.

One it means Switch 1 will be the highest selling console ever, easily surpassing the PS2.

Two, since Switch 2 is already being subsudized and sold at a loss:

It means that the people who can't afford the upgrade yet will still have an option until they can save that extra 100 dollars. It's just amazing to me that with several games like Hogwarts and SFVI the Switch 2 meets or surpasses the XSS. That's with I'm sure much inferior CPU and power setup. Pretty great upgrade considering many here were guessing below PS4 level power before the reveal. Nvidia and Nintendo fucking cooked with this one.

Once the exclusive Switch 2 software kicks in most people will most likely be ready to make the upgrade. Mario Kart World is gonna play a huge part in people upgrading but Zelda and Animal Crossing will bring in even more. It makes sense to say that the Switch is still viable on the market while the Switch 2 begins to break ground. The icing on the cake being that certain Switch software will be enhanced on Switch 2 giving people even more reason to upgrade down the line.

Why do you, as a consumer, argue for higher prices? You are on an enthusiasts board; I am willing to go out on a limb and guess that the majority of posters here can afford to buy a Switch 2.

The "poor" gamers have been big consumers of Nintendo's consoles in the past. We will have to wait and see if Nintendo has extended beyond that mass market appeal but no way am I going to sit here and hate it if the "poors" have access to entertainment. Necessity? No. A damn good distraction when life is kicking you in the ass? Yes.
I'm not advocating for higher prices, but we need to understand the complex current economic context. That "fixed" price of $60 is way, way behind the accumulated inflation the United States has endured since the 1990s. Let's not even talk about today's development costs. I think price increases make sense. I don't like high prices. I wish everything were cheaper, but you can't just kick and scream like a child without understanding how the world works.

The price point of the console isn't the problem. It's the $80 games. They've gotta set the ceiling at $69.99 and just be okay with leaving that additional greedy $10 off the table. Otherwise I think many people will just revolt and only play old games. And also $80 games is the death of new games. It would be a slow death but a death nonetheless. I can't imagine giving Nintendo $80 freaking dollars for a four-year old Kirby game. Or a very minor add-on to last year's Mario Party. Just ridiculous.
Exactly. It's the $80 games. If they get away with it the industry will adopt that pricing. There's no good reason to pay that other than Nintendo wanting to squeeze consumers rather than providing real value. It will stifle things as many people won't want to put that kind of money down on a video game.

Nintendo isn't a likable company anymore and treat their customers like dirt. They sue their fans for pleasure, perma ban people for modding THEIR devices, and don't even have enough respect for their customers to disclose pricing in a transparent way because they know they're being greedy pricks.

I can afford the Switch 2 and games but I'm not buying it. Nintendo isn't the hot shit they were in the 90s. The old leadership has moved on and we have so many better options to spend our money and time on these days. I'd rather save the money for Steam Deck 2 and support indies than give this out of touch company anymore support. I hope they have another Wii U on their hands and get a major shake up.

Tell this to WiiU shareholders.

People wouldn't care so much if Nintendo lowered the prices of their games over time. 3-4 year old AAA games hit $10-20 all the times on sales. Yet you're lucky if Nintendo graces you with a $40 sale on a six year old game.

And Nintendo is now finally having a more complete online experience in 2025, finally having built-in features that were part of Xbox Live back when it released in 2002.

Everyone bought a Wii, but very few went for the Wii-U. In many people's minds it was over 10 years from the Wii launch to the Switch and major changes in hardware both in performance, and what features it has. The Switch 2 is more powerful, but the major features are voice/video chat, and a mouse. Console people have avoided mice for so long, we'll see if there's uptake. There will likely be support, but I question how many people will make the "switch". It's been 8 years since the Switch came out, and the Switch 2 doesn't look like it brings that much difference. With the gigantic install base of the Switch, Nintendo is likely to get hit by what Sony and Microsoft did where their new consoles don't have the same uptick as the previous gen, with many 3rd parties targeting both Switch systems giving consumers less reason to upgrade.

I went ahead and fixed the headline for ya:

"some people...may not put up with the absolute bullshit [the Switch 2's] price point and game prices. That's why we wanted to make the other Switch platforms available...........................................................................................................................but at least we still made the game carts Mr. Yuck proof"
