Dragon Age: Inquisition PC performance thread

Glad I recently upgraded to 8.1. My hardware is pretty dated, so seeing the (anecdotal) performance gains from 7 to 8.1 is encouraging. I'm on an i5 2500K@4.5 and a 7950 3GB; I'd be perfectly satisfied with performance in the vicinity 30FPS, at high-ish settings.

I game a lot on the PS4 and have grown accustomed to the favela experience.

I was actually surprised how little moving the game to SSD helped with the loading times. My whole computer boots faster than the game loads Hinterlands lol
Noted. This'll go on the HDD, then.

I have:

i5 2500k @ 4.2
970 EVGA FTW
8 gigs RAM

and now Win 8.1 on a SSD.

Have Dragon Age on the SSD now too. It has helped the loading times though not as much as I had hoped.

Copy your user directory and restore it after reinstalling, and that takes care of quite a bit, aside from programs that store settings in the registry.

What I do (or did rather) was after I got tired of doing all of that stuff for the umpteenth time, was to install all of the stuff I knew I needed, get the settings right, and then made an image of it.

You can use something like Acronis or Norton Ghost to do it.

Thank you both for feedback

rc6886 -- Your method would only work for re-installing the same OS though? Not a completely different OS?

qassim -- From what I've read about Win 7 to Win 8.1, it sounds like you are required to install all programs/apps from scratch. Only the OS is upgraded. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong

Since I've already invested over 110 hours and beaten the main campaign there's not much benefit for me upgrading to Windows 8.1 just for this game. I do find the performance disparity interesting though. Possibly a sign of things to come with newer releases. I won't be upgrading my OS until Windows 10 comes out next year. If Windows 10 and DX12 further improve PC gaming performance we'll probably see a widespread adoption by gamers.

So if I don't partition the drive, would the OS installation basically prevent me from using it for anything else? Or is partitioning just to be on the safe side? I've heard some stuff about a boot partition, the company that put together my PC included one (it's called System), is that needed too?

Could anyone answer this, please?

Could anyone answer this, please?

I haven't tried it, but I believe a partition is almost like another drive, so I think you won't have a problem there. If you want to be sure, just google it.

Yeah, I'd also like to know about upgrading from 7 to 8.1.

Yes, that happens. If you choose the upgrade option, then it's like formatting and having most of your data in another drive. Nothing is kept on the registry, so you have to manually install everything again. However, you just need to keep the installation files and choose the same directory they are in. Don't worry about Steam games, though. They will need to be installed again, but in this case, it is basically like running them for the first time and going through that setup. Also use Ninite for apps you install in the default location.

Does my User folder stay in tact or should I back it up? I have a lot of media so my User folder is pretty large, I'd need to buy a larger external HDD to back it up. Will I have to actually redownload all my Steam games or just install them again?

As for the user folder, it should go with you, but if you want to be safe, you can change its location to another drive. As for Steam games, you just need to perform the first-time setup again. Use the Upgrade Assistant.

From Scylla Costa, producer on Dragon Age: Inquisition

Hi everyone,

On November 18, we released Dragon Age: Inquisition to the world. Since then, the team has listened to feedback and is working towards the first of an ongoing series of patches and feature/content updates in an effort to support your DAI experience.

As a live service, we wanted to let you know about our strategy moving forward. Here’s a brief outline of two initiatives we’re working on, in order of priority.

Priority 1 – Patches

We’re committed to providing long-term gameplay and stability improvements. We have already released a Day 1 Patch, and in December we will release our second patch. We expect the patch to roll out on PC, PS3, PS4, and Xbox 360 on December 9, 2014. We are working hard to get Patch 2 out on Xbox One as soon as possible.

Patch 2 is focused on stability, but does include numerous improvements and fixes across the board. Full patch notes will be available soon, but generally Patch 2 includes fixes to:

Stability – Various crashes, freezes, audio/voice glitches, and many stability improvements.
Gameplay – Conversations, quests, plot states, combat, UI, camera, controls, follower/enemy AI and path finding, exploits, radar, and search.
Multiplayer – In addition to some of the gameplay improvements listed above, multiplayer fixes also cover areas such as animations, game mode bugs, stat reporting, and stability/crash fixes.
PC – Numerous control & UI fixes, fixes to some hitching, improved Mantle performance, graphical glitches.

Beyond Patch 2 we’ll continue to release patches that focus on gameplay improvements. We’ve already lined up a number of improvements and fixes we’d like to include in Patch 3, and of course we’ll continue listening to you to make sure we’re addressing your concerns.

I wanted to call out a few specific topics as well, as they relate to patches:

Keyboard & Mouse controls – Patch 2 includes the first range of fixes towards addressing the feedback we’ve received on the PC controls; it cleans things up so you’ll see fewer problems with the current layout. This gives us a more stable base upon which to work. After Patch 2 goes out, our next priority is to improve the PC mouse/keyboard controls further. We’re investigating how to expand on PC usability and functionality to address specific requests from the community. Keep an eye on this thread by Mark Darrah for more updates.

Some people have reported problems with party banter firing. To find out more about how the Banter System works please go here. We have also identified that in some edge scenarios, banter isn’t firing as often as we’d like, so we’ll be increasing the percentage chance of it happening. This increase will come after Patch 2.

More here. So yeah, patch 1 was never really addressed before this, but it was released on day one. Let's hope the PC improvements include better performance all around. You guys may have it before I get a chance to play it, so could you post here about it? Also, hopefully the gender bug is sorted out.

EDIT: Sorry, didn't see your post before mine! :)

I'm hoping the patch fixes the issues I'm having with the game, mainly getting a BSOD and having my GTX 970 disappear from my Hardware Manager. Shutting down the computer fixes it, though. And this is my brand new rig using an i7 and a fresh install of Windows 7.
Other games work just fine.

Welcome. Windows 8.1 was a fantastic upgrade for SSD owners. Not to mention the security improvements... some features are enabled by default in 8.1 that (hopefully) outright defeat certain kinds of exploits. Going from W7 to W8.1 on my SSD was huge (seconds off of my boot time!)

Anyone know how to tell what game version is running in Origin?

and can anyone remember the console command to lock it to 30fps? I've been searching around and can't find it.

Anyone test the new AMD Omega Drivers to see if they make any difference?
Tested last night in the hinterlands
Everything ultra
No msaa and fxaa
Smaa enabled through Radeon pro
3770k
290 oc'd
16 gb ram
Got as low as 33fps in some parts of the hinterlands
Will update after today's patch.

First time launching the game on 8.1, crashes on the main menu. Certainly doesn't seem to help with stability lol.

Hope the patch in an hour (?) helps, I really want to just jump back in.

I'm on 8.1 and Inquisition is the most unstable game I've played. Constant CTDs and freezes especially if I use Windowed Fullscreen mode. Its a huge bummer because windowed fullscreen mode is the only way I can take screenshots.

Anxiously waiting for the patch.

I haven't had a crash or freeze once, either on Windows 7 or 8.1. Sorry to hear that this isn't the case for everyone. :\

I've had 2 freezes on Win 7. Both were when I was just idling on the starting menu without being in a game. No freezing or CTD in the actual game itself in 15 hours or so.

No freezes on 8.1 yet though I've only put about 2-3 hours into it since 8.1

I'm glad to hear they are addressing stability first though. That's important.

Yup, definitely the worst one in recent memory, pretty sure I haven't had this many crashes with a game since GTA IV's PC port.

What makes me sad is the fact that there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason for the CTDs. I played the game just fine for 6 or 7 hours, then it suddenly started crashing. I've tried literally every fix I've found online and none has helped.

And I loved the 7 hours I got to play so much :(

Downloading at the blistering speed of 100kbps lol. Wonder what's up, nothing wrong with my connection.

Really excited to get back to it. If it crashes in the first hour though I'll just assume they haven't fixed what's wrong in my end and wait for the patch number 2.

e: 0 kbps. goddamn origin never seems to work.

At work at the moment, so if someone could give us some feedback on how performance is post-patch as well as m/kb controls, it would be appreciated.

I just walked around so far. The gender bug is fixed (no need to restart) and Mantle performance seems better and more stable. Didn't try any cutscenes yet, though. Will try when I get back home later tonight.

EDIT: Also, I've noticed this before the patch and it still remains: if you change between DirectX and Mantle, it will ask you to restart. Once you do that, chances are that the loading times will be very long. Restart once more and it should get back to normal. Finally, I've noticed that the hair is shiner in both High and Ultra Mesh Quality.

Can you all imagine how hard it is to be a PC dev? It's got to be maddening...

Because I've played this game for a full 55 hours and have never crashed once. Also my cutscenes do not stutter (although they do clearly run at 30fps) and I haven't made any console or command line changes

On the other side you've got other people who swear this is the buggiest game ever and crashes for everyone. When that's clearly not the case for all players

It's impossible to make a PC game perfect for all systems out there

The banter bug seems fixed. I've had 3 in thirty minutes whereas I only had around 4 in the 15 hours I've played.

Also, no crashes or freezes yet.

Noted. This'll go on the HDD, then.

I've got a 2500k (no oc) and a 6970, and I can average around 30 fps with everything but shadows and tessalation set to ultra (i set those to high).

For this line in the patch notes:

[PC] Hiding the HUD on the PC will now hide all UI elements

How do you hide the HUD in the first place??

Shinier in a good or bad way?

My character looks like this now:

Thank you both for feedback

rc6886 -- Your method would only work for re-installing the same OS though? Not a completely different OS?

qassim -- From what I've read about Win 7 to Win 8.1, it sounds like you are required to install all programs/apps from scratch. Only the OS is upgraded. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong

Yeah, it would only work for the original OS. Went back and read your post and didn't realize you were looking to save everything after upgrading.

Yeah they definitely screwed up the hair on all settings now. Everyone looks like a bad action figure.

And it seems the game stutters when moving the camera around now, which it didn't before.

Is there a way to download the patch directly, without Origin? POS refuses to work and simply won't download it for me.

e: nvm downloaded finally

Installed the patch and my goddamn game is still randomly black screen crashing during the first Skyhold cutscenes.

I can't get back to gameplay because this horseshit keeps happening.

CTRL-F - "Way of the Assassin" - 0 results. Dammit.

At least they fixed the freezing in game menu that I've experienced a couple times.
