I felt they captured the "nobleman" aspect of frieza quite well in the Kai dub.
But he still had that feminine voice (well, not for the second form, but still... ). It should be deeper if they want to go for the nobility route. As it stands, it's the right delivery but with the wrong voice.

I mean they could have kept high pitched shrieking battle cry, which makes frieza all hte more creepy in the japanese audio, but that's the extent on the femininity I want on my evil galactic overlords :lol

Been sort of bored lately... so... I'm going to attempt to watch the Buu saga again. Have it on VHS, of all things. Last time I watched it was 7 years ago and the memories of it being terrible are still there. Let's see how these memories hold up.

Figured you guys might enjoy this one :

Seems to be a near final version of DB : Origins.

Whoa, where'd you get that?

Picked up the first Dragon Box volume from Fry's... they have them all on sale for $34.99, which is cheaper than ordering online.

I really should buy the Boxes, but damn if I'm not sure I can stomach Z again. Especially without the Monster Rancher, and Megaman score that riddled my childhood. (I bought all of the Orange Bricks based on the idea we were never going to get anything better, I was wrong)

I was hesitant but finally bit the bullet... I've only scanned through the first disc but the image quality is definitely better than the orange brick sets. The packaging is also more appealing... more so because I had a few issues with the discs being loose in the remastered sets I originally bought. I'm glad I only bought seasons 1-3 of those before stopping out of laziness, so rebuying won't hurt too terribly.

Why are there dub episodes of DBZ kai up to episode 37 on youtube if the DVDs haven't been released yet?

If you're talking about uncut episodes, it's probably because RightStuf.com (official FUNi store) tends to ship DVDs a few weeks early. I always go to them whenever I wanna preorder One Piece DVDs. :D

I don't want to triple post, but apparently it's confirmed that Toriyama isn't returning to DragonBall. Someone got ahold of a Shueshia rep and asked them. They denied it.

The Kai releases are only up to 26 at this point. Part 3 is in 2011 IIRC. Any episodes you find on the internet past the DVD releases are from the Nicktoons broadcast. If you're in the US, Nicktoons does stream the dub. Be forewarned, it is edited.

Except when your protagonist, the mightiest warrior to ever grace the universe, sounds like a girl.

While he does eventually start sounding like my grandma, it is the part of the point. His voice is like that to show off his child-like naivity, something that is absent in the English version with Schemmel.

I'm not sure he ever needed the voice of a woman to convey such a trait, as everything he did in the show drove the point home quite clearly.

Edit: I guess this was a bit of an older show, so the actual time it was made could have played a part. I'm ignorant when it comes to film history, let alone japan's.

Figures.

Just bought the first part of Dragon Ball Z Kai on BD from Amazon. Super exicted to get it in. A part of me still wants to get the Dragon Box's also, just so I could go back and watch some of the fillers if I ever wanted to.

IMDB (I know, I know) changed their page listing DragonBall: Reborn, the title to the unproduced DragonBall Evolution sequel, to "Untitled DragonBall Reboot (2012)". While IMDB can be edited by anyone, I don't believe page titles, or pages themselves can be created without a higher up approving it. Said higher up usually has means to believe it'll be produced.

Yeah I'm looking to do the same some time. By the way, I was just curious what's been the general fan consensus on KAI vs the Dragon Boxes? I mean yes I know about the re-edits and such, but I'm talking Picture Quality wise. Because I was just watching the Abridged series last night which definitely looks like it uses the Dragon Boxes with it's sharp, vivid colors, and maybe it's just watching KAI in SD Satellite quality, but it almost seems inferior to what I've seen with the Dragon Box footage.

They're difficult to compare. Kai is a 1080p show. The DragonBoxes are encoded at 480p. Kai is a bit jarring, or at least it was for me. Toei would colour correct certain pieces of animation (like Vegeta's hair being brown in the Saiyan saga for instance) in Kai. The issue is that the colour correction occured via someone tracing the cell, and colouring it in digitally. It's really jarring to go from remastered cell animation to some sloppily traced digital animation.

Abridged is definitely using Dragon Box footage. Looks nice even on Youtube :D

Maybe I'm LTTP on this particular change, but I was watching some of the Orange Boxes a few days ago and noticed that a lot of English dialogue in Kai has been changed or added from the original English.

Vegeta's death in the Namek saga has Goku saying some different stuff; in Kai, he says that Vegeta's pride was what he respected most, as opposed to him talking about Vegeta's tears showing that he doesn't have a heart of stone. There are a few more new lines that Goku has that basically give the impression that the rewrite was meant to summarize and speed up the scene (which makes sense given that this is Kai's purpose in a way), and overall that particular scene isn't changed in any significant way.

And Goku transforming into a SSJ for the first time, for example, has Goku saying "How dare you?" (referring to the death of Krillin) to Frieza right before he transforms, which wasn't there in the original English dub. I'm far from a purist, so it's not a big deal, but I thought Goku's "How dare you?" was kind of a weird addition, and it makes me wonder how much else has been changed.

The Kai dub has a more accurate script, which is why you're hearing these changes.

yeah, pretty much all the changes you're speaking of are just kai being more faithful to the original material than Funi's translation the first go around.

They basically changed vegeta's death speach from "Damnit, get angry! You're a warrior! We were reduced to a race of servants, and then disposed of like trash. As a proud warrior race, that, more than anything, shames us. Take revenge on Frieza, for all the saiyans." (although more emotional) to :

"He took me from my father and made me into what I am. Don't let anyone else have to go through that."

It's purely a fan dub. I found that last night when I was hunting for a YouTube version of Vegeta's Kai death. I hadn't clicked the link in here til just now. :lol

DragonBall Movie 1 finally will be released uncut in North America! On December 28, Funimation will release DragonBall: Curse of the Blood Rubies on DVD. The film, along with the first 13 episodes of the TV series, were tied into licensing hell due to the Lionsgate/Kidmark distribution deal, that's expired and now things can change! Oddly, review copies were sent out earlier this year, and it was noted it used the original 1995 Ocean Dub for the film. This dub of the film is edited. Yet reviewers noted the inclusion of the uncut Japanese track. Funimation still haven't confirmed what's up on the dub side, but they've confirmed it will contain the Japanese language track.

:o Interesting.

Picked up Dragon Box #4 today, have yet to open it though. Has there been a date on the fifth one yet?

Feb 11 I think.

and lol at DB movie 1 finally being released. Took them long enough.

A redub for Movie 1 was confirmed. It'll be using the Kai cast. So that the only thing that remains consistent with the dubs for the DragonBall movies is that the cast is never consistent.

Kai's new music is what got me back into the series. The first dub's ost was good, but this gives the series a totally different and imo, a more dramatic feeling. That an my love for Gohan's new voice.

Dende's VA is also Alphonse Elric's VA, right?

That's the one thing that makes me hesitate about picking up the future sets. I only have the first one so far but I can't stand it. Probably because I can't stand how she ruined Luffy in the English dub of One Piece.

So maybe this has already been resolved and I'm just missing something, but is this show still slated for a 100 episode release? There's only 19 episodes to go and they've just barely hit the Perfect Cell portion. Just checked wikipedia the other day and it still says 100 episodes. I assume it HAS to break 100 now, and that this number was just an approximate placeholder..

I think there was some Kai merchandise announced a while back that included Boo characters, so Boo saga is pretty much confirmed. There's no way they're ending it at 100 episodes... at this rate, the number will probably be closer to 130.

Oh come now, I'm not saying she's better than Mayumi Tanaka, but she's far from "ruined" the character ESPECIALLY compared to the 4Kids voice.

Kai being 100 episodes was a guesstimate by a few Japanese retailers that have stuck. I doubt they don't have any plans for the Boo stuff.

Orange bricks...I weep for you. :(

The CW4Kids broadcast will go to repeats after episode 26, I imagine 4Kids, and the CW are hastily editing another batch of episodes, as the series has performed well.

Those the redone ones with original Japanese audio? I was looking at them earlier and was thinking of picking them up.
