I'm watching Dragon Ball Kai right now for the first time and it's kind of blowing my mind how much stuff was filler.
Just finishing off the Namek saga, Goku just started powering up the Spirit Bomb. It was really weird going through the Saiyan saga and it skipping all of those filler episodes, like Princess Snake, Home for Infinite Losers, Gohan surviving in the wilderness, Gohan and those orphans, Krillin and the others fighting those fake Saiyans, etc. Even scenes I thought were in the manga like Yamcha at the baseball game aren't in there. It's really weird. Anyway, it's been enjoyable though, I haven't watched the show since 2005 I think.
I'm surprised they kept some scene like Bulma and Ginyu switching places. That's some obvious ass filler.
The new animation in some sections is pretty neat, like the animators have to imitate the style of late 80s/ early 90s show. But a lot of the times you can pretty clearly tell that it's new animation since it's a lot cleaner. There's a sequence in the middle of the Frieza fight where Goku is having visions of Vegeta, King Vegeta and Bardock all telling him to kill Frieza for the Saiyan race, which is kind of touching and adds a lot to the battle.
