Just got back from seeing it with my son. Thought it was pretty good. I feel the combat scenes sort of lacked compared to the brolly movie but everything else looked pretty great. I feel this movie pushed the series a little bit more than brolly too. If you’re still a fan of DB you’d probably enjoy it. I embrace all the ridiculousness.

If you think
Gohan Beast
is a bit far fetched, wait till you see the latest chapter of the manga -
Frieza gets a new black form and one shots UI Goku and UE Vegeta

We saw it 😁

It was cool, even if the new forms make no sense. I mean making sense has pretty much completely gone out the window since super, so.

But hey they gave piccolo some love, which was the best part about this movie. Fav character

Next time though, they need to bring back cooler for a new movie 🙏

Frieza being stronger than those Saiyans actually makes sense, Frieza just has a far far higher natural potential

Not that the form makes sense, or UI Goku for that matter

Honestly its the best part of the saga so far.
Frieza aways had power in him to beat Sayians, but his ego pretty much gets in the way. Which was showed in his own film, that he was so over himself that forgot to get used to his new form.

I think this time he learn his lesson. The worst part about those new sagas is the overfocus on Vegeta and Goku. DBZ was more fun when was about multiple characters. The wide range of characters is the best part about DB series.

Wasnt even aware of this until I saw the thread. Watched the trailer.

Is this a Gohan + piccolo movie more or less with no Goku?
Pretty much. There’s a bit of goku and vegeta, but just a little moment that’s not really apart of the main story.

Same.

It looks pretty great, at least from the point of view of a fair-weathered fan. Dialogue (in the very little you get from the trailer) seems like it walks that razor's edge of utter silliness, but I really like the voice actors they've chosen. But most of all, the artwork looks great. They've combined the new with the old, both in terms of style and technical presentation. Plus, I think just focusing on a handful of characters, with two or three mains, it feels more like a big-budget super-hero movie.

I've always been a casual fan of the DB world, but I'd watch it.

Goku at the beginning of the movie:

(Edit: I haven't seen it yet but I'm just making a fun guess).

Brief thoughts:

I thought the animation from the trailing was a little jarring but seeing the real thing was fantastic. Great animation.

The story I thought was really dumb and had a lot of continuity errors though it might have made the movie longer if done correctly. They probably didn’t want to increase the budget.

Overall I thought it was worth the ticket price.

Are these the type of errors that you think they'll try and fix or expand on when bringing the anime series back? Like the first two super movies?

I kept getting the original dragon ball show vibe from the movie considering how few fights you had for like the first half. Lots of comedy, exploring, and goofiness. The animation style would bother me off and on in the movie. I find the upgrades to gohan and piccolo didn't look that great. I hated Piccolo's scheme. We also got some new saiyan lore with how they grow up that was really odd. With all of that negativity out the way I actually really enjoyed the movie. I found it to be a lot of fun. Doing this type of story every once in a while, is great. I do feel like they were aiming for a younger crowd with this show but I feel like they failed at the last battle with that in mind. I think they also could have gone with a more touching movie concerning the relationship between piccolo and gohan.

Shouldn't the androids have like scouters to scan for power levels? I honestly thought the 2 androids were going to combine. I really loved how piccolo got so big and was just taking all of that 2's hits like they were nothing. I kinda hope this upgrade is permanent since Piccolo and Gohan would then be possibly useful. I was kinda shocked that this movie was set only 3 years after dbs. No chi chi at all in the movie was odd. I still think that tien is stronger than krillin and would have been perfect for this movie since he fought the mini version of this cell and also would have been great at holding cell back. Why didn't they just wish back android 2 a year later? The whole they grow up all of a sudden saiyan thing was weird. Like gohan and trunks should be around 15 years old so they should have reached that height.

Piccolo should have had a partner when he sneaked into that base it would have had a better comedic effect. They didn't quite go hard enough on the comedic route. I kind of felt like they should have done more of a one piece movie style of comedy for this. Maybe have a defective android who follows piccolo around and helps him out at the enemy base.

I kind of feel like they need more imaginative and detailed writers for these types of adventures if they are going to make more dragon ball movies like this cause this story and location/world felt very simple even though they had a huge camouflage base.

It's also kinda crazy how all of those red ribbon army people should be dead at the end because of that explosion.

Here's a weird question? Can piccolo only make clothes appear?

Imagine Piccolo as a gay fashion designer just popping out clothes left and right with a snap of his fingers:LOL:

I said this in the anime thread awhile back but a meh movie frontload with a bunch of fanservice which shows that DB franchise has completely run out of ideas.

I thought it was pretty funny that even Piccolo knew the name of Pan’s teacher, really goes to show how often he fills in for Gohan lol

I was surprised that Piccolo didn’t reveal himself and start a fight when he got the disguise and snuck into the Red Ribbon HQ. I feel of this wasn’t aimed so much at kids, how would have tried am outward ki release to destroy everything and everyone in a blast radius…

The androids have never had a built in power level sensor so I didn’t expect them, no surprise there. What was surprising was that Gamma 2 revealed to Gohan that he had power limit, 85% or so when Gohan asked. The androids were so supposed to have unlimited power generators… Dr Hedo was supposed to be much smarter than Gero, so he must have limited their energy on purpose to either make sure they’d be controllable or to make it easier to mass produce as per his plan.

Lastly I found it very odd that Call Max didn’t have any regenerative abilities like the original had. Pretty disappointing.

I was thinking about that cell regenerative thing when watching it as well so I was expecting a kamehameha as the last attack to make sure it covered the whole cell max. What if this cell max actually does have regenerative abilities and they are just leaving perfect cell for the next super super hero movie or just the next dbs movie. Considering how much everyone struggled with this version of cell what would perfect cell max be like.

I honestly couldn't tell if the Gammas were weak or strong. Gohan's strength is supposedly around blue level thanks to dbs nonsense and I doubt that Dr. Hedo made android of that level and Gohan went beyond even that. The Gammas seemed like a downgrade compared to 17 and 18. Now that I think about it why did the Gamma dissipate. Is it possible he didn't actually die but had a fake hero death programmed in. I'll at least give to Dr. Hedo that he was able to create a cell creature in a really short amount of time and some androids somewhat comparable to 17 and 18 at only 24 years old. The only problem I have with having another android sub boss enemy is that we just had that super android in the moro arc.

I always thought the unlimited power generators didn't make much sense for the androids cause like weren't they a lot weaker during future trunks era. I thought they were conserving power in the future. You would think that the generators would only be able to release so much energy at a time capping the androids power but at the same time having a forever power source

Piccolo not blasting away makes some sense since the android was as or stronger than him. I just can't see him usually disguising himself and sneaking in. I could see someone pushing him to do it but not him just deciding on his own to do so. For that reason, I think he should have had a partner for this infiltrating portion.

I really need to stop getting too anal over dragon ball issues and just remind myself that it is set in the world of a prequel gag manga.

Fucking fantastic. Beautiful animation, awesome fight scenes, great new characters (that better be in DragonBall Super FighterZ), and a perfect recreation of what made DragonBall so fantastic. Lots of comedy, lots of heart, lots of awesome growth.

Only issues I have are a few of the area scenes that looked a bit bland.

As for people complaining about retcons/continuity issues - this has always been an issue with Dragon Ball anime/movies/shows.

Powers scaling meant something in Z.

Make it easy - the scenes where you know it's bs, i.e. ultimate Gohan as strong as ss blue, chuck that out the window.

Killin vs ss blue! Chuck it.

Cyborg 17 vs ss blue, chuck it.

Ultimate Gohan post training I would say is stronger than ss3 Goku, but weaker than super Saiyan god.

Let's be real here, super is as bad with power scaling as GT, and you have to take some things as just gags.

Master roshi in the top, gtfo...

beast mode gohan and I hope the final name for piccolo isn't orange piccolo and also fix his jawline pleeeeease. - I have no idea how to scale that.

Cell max I just say he's pure android in other words mechanical and non organic. We won't be getting another cell appearance.

In Z continuity isn't really an issue with power scaling, I mean aside from the stupid zenkai boosts in the Frieza saga.

Some of the movies have pretty terrible power scaling at points, but the show is mostly good with that all things considered.

Power scaling has always been an issue with the series, even as early as DragonBall. I am not saying that it isn‘t a legitimate complaint for the franchise as a whole, but trying to attribute it to only being a movie or Z series thing is silly. It is just an issue with Shonen manga in general.

Where do you think the power scaling in Z is stupid post namek?

Not saying you're necessarily wrong, just curious

Master Roshi is just a weird character for the most part. Like he throws me off with his powerscaling. In dragon ball he blows up the moon so he should be pretty powerful. Like I don't feel like any of the z fighters were that powerful until goku became super saiyan. They could have easily just had it to where he hid his strength. He is like 300 years old so you would think none of the other humans would be able to surpass him in strength that easily. Then again maybe blowing up the moon was a gag part of the comic.

There also was that time when Roshi blew up that mountain and I now wonder if krillin and yamcha could pull that off at the start of dragon ball z.

On cell max. I thought I saw meat when krillin cut the arm or was it tail off. Cell max was just weird like why was he turning into stone later on as he got hurt. I think I'm going to have to watch the movie again cause cell max makes no sense in the fight.

Agreed, I like Dragonball/Z/Super, but I just can’t with fans who put Toriyama on a pedestal and act like he wasn’t making everything up chapter by chapter, often handed characters power-ups they definitely didn’t earn (Saiyans get stronger by HEALING, geezus, Gohan and Krillin get handed a power up by a Namekian elder, Vegeta gets SSJ offscreen because he got frustrated with himself (the anime made that shit up about rocks in space), Gohan gets another free power up with Mystic, Goten and Trunks just get it and all the fans’ weak attempts at justifying this given Gohan’s entire experience contradicts this was my final straw), etc.

I definitely recommend watching Plague of Gripes‘ videos on Dragonball. He’s not a Dragonball or even anime Youtuber, but just ended up making a short 4 video series called Dragon Ball Gripes (or DBG). They’re pretty entertaining. I’ll list them in the spoiler below (the 4th video is a reupload from another channel, not sure why Plague has to remove the original).

the first video is about Tien getting disrespected the worst, even more than Krillin or Yamaha, 2nd video is about trying to make sense on how power levels and ki even work logically, 3rd video is about Kefla and how that even if supposedly her power scale doesn’t make sense (some may disagree, including myself, given how fusions scaling were presented so far) it’s not because of the dumb reasons fans said and everyone needs to chill, and 4th video is Plague losing his mind trying to explain timelines in Z and Super (he acknowledges it’s not a canon explanation, because the canon explanations often contradict its own rules).

Well if early piccolo could blow up the moon, maybe full power roshi...?

But speaking of that it was strange you never saw him fight in that form.

In general DB is a lot more gag like than z

Exactly. The series was always stupid and that was a part of its charm. People worry too much about power levels instead of just enjoying the character growth, silly moments, and fun comedic antics.

It is true that that is a lot more gag but the growth in strength is a lot more gradual than z and super which just went absolutely crazy.

I wonder why he never taught goku and them that buffed up form. We do see him fight in that form when he is in zombie mode and for some odd reason is able to beat Tien.

why black frieza didnt kill goku and vegeta

Nothing but a guess...but after alot of beatings(meaning being killed and humiliated), I think Frieza finally understand to not underestimate both Goku and Vegeta. Maybe he is willing to just keep training and waiting the right moment. Which is weird but at same time, I don't think he is willing to beat both of them at their worst moment. Maybe he really wants to beat them at full power, so he can show off how powerfull he is.
