One thing that bugs me about these sites is they always treat imports as betas by doing only impressions and previews. You can do a review on the damn game. It's a retail final copy. What's even better is you have all the time you need to publish the review unlike a deadline for US based reviews. When the US version of a game comes out, you simply copy and paste the JP import review with a few modifications such as US/JP differences. The current state of journalism just sucks major ass. I don't really get the information that I want out of these reviews. Please do better!

Well, with a game the size of Dragon Quest, if you're waiting for a review it's gonna be another 3-4 weeks. The idea behind import impressions is to get something up soon after the game's release, not to provide a comprehensive breakdown of the game's pros and cons. Gamespot used to provide a lot of import reviews, but it's not something a lot of sites deal with, any more. More's the pity, but that's how things go.

I'm not expecting any reviews up soon for long games like RPGs. My complaint is that most sites don't put up reviews at all for a lot of import games, even for a textless Capcom fighting game.

For the bilingual reviewer, I think it is best to play the import game throughly so you have a better understanding of the game to be able to write a better review on it. You have more time than you would have if you just reviewed the US copy only. You know what the game is like so you can zip through the US version quicker and have a different focus when reviewing the US copy cause you wrote the JP import review with most of the work already done. A review where the reviewer goes through the game once then revisits it would have a far better review than a review where the reviewer rushes through it once to meet a deadline.

*This past weekend, Dragon Quest VIII finally made its debut in "The Land of the Rising Sun" on a Saturday, because there's a Japanese law that forbids the sale of Dragon Quest games on weekdays."

No, there is not.

Well that's why you'll have to wait for non-site reviewers to finish their copy. I'd say you'll see something long and in-depth posted here by next weekend ;)

What!? You haven't finished it yet? Disgusting. Get back to the game immediately!
I've still only just beaten the first boss :lol

DQ VIII is > 50 hours, right?

Bebpo, you are the RPG master *bows*

because there's a Japanese law that forbids the sale of Dragon Quest games on weekdays.

I kept on seeing this same quote everywhere, so I looked through the transcripts of the Japanese diet sessions and actually found the Dragon Quest series mentioned a couple of times, but only by politicians trying to sound hip. Didn't find any hardcore legislation about the game, though.

I always figured the 'Japanese law prohibiting sale of DQ on weekdays' thing was hyperbole. Didn't know anyone was taking it seriously, though I guess it is poor journalism.

From what I was told, Enix was asked (warned?) back in the day to start releasing the DQ games on holidays or weekends to cut down on all the truency that was going on. They obliged, and that's that. No "law" ever existed.

BTW, just read both stories, and the 1UP impressions are far more informative and useful than the GSpot ones. For those of you who want to save some time.

Cancel your Gamespot Complete subscriptions, it's all over.
Anoop's and Vestal's impressions rock. I wish I got paid to play DQ :D

The down side with off-site reviewers is that they don't review the US version nor really do any comparisons, of decent depth, which is the biggest and most important missing information in nearly every single US review on a JP-made game.
