Dragon Quest XI S Nears 8.5 Million Sold; Series Surpasses 94 Million Units Globally

I bought this for my Switch a couple of weeks ago and am enjoying it. Gameplay is sound and the story fairly engaging. The main issue I have with it is the music. Don't get me wrong, it's a good little tune but it only lasts 1 minute and then repeats!!

I think Morrowind and Skyrim got this right with an ambient symphonic piece where you don't even notice it looping. It even plays different pieces as you change areas. This though is doing my head in as seems to be the same track - I'm sure there must be other tracks but it doesn't seem like it. Don't get me started on the music playing when in battle as it almost makes me want to avoid enemies because of it 😡

I play with the sound turned off half the time. I'm 10 hours in but for this alone it deserves at least 10% reduction in review score. I just don't think there's any excuse considering the amount of money they're ploughing into the game not to bother a bit more with the music.

I'm sure there is an option to mute the music, but I guess what I'm saying is I shouldn't have to.

Now hire someone to do a decent soundtrack.

Im not someone who pays attention to music in games. I dont really notice if it's good or bad, unless it's really really good or really really bad. Drsgon quest XII is the only game in my 30 years of gaming where i actually noticed the soundtrack being really really bad.

"I just finished the demo.

I'm still hesitating to pick it up. There are some clunky aspects that I assume are inherent to the series, and the skill point mechanics feel a bit simplistic...

Not bad, but I'm not fond of the fact that most of us can only play an improved port of the inferior Switch version.
I bought it and finished when it was released on PS4. Awesome game; I didn't enjoy the previous ones.

Such a fantastic game. Played it on the Switch. Feel bad for anyone who bought the base xi game and didn't get this as some kind of free update.
Really look forward to XII but now that I have a portal, will get it for my PS5.

I should have loved this game. I like it but a few things bugged me. The sisters as characters I could never care about. I guess the "twist" really annoyed me as I felt like all for nothing. Why give me the original outfit post game and not have NG+? Still played through it both versions. Oh and Sylvando was just so annoying to me. I think the pinnacle of of DQ is still part 8. LOVE that one and all the characters too.

Could Dragon Quest XII be the final Dragon Quest game (outside of remakes/remasters/re-releases)? I realize this thread is centered on DQXI's impressive sales and the franchise itself surpassing 94 million units sold globally, and with sales like that, why would you end such a franchise? The reason I'm wondering is because Toriyama has passed on, Sugiyama has passed on. From what I understand, Dragon Quest, at its heart is a making of Horri, Toriyama and Sakaguchi under the company Armor Project. 2/3rds of that team are gone. Square has expressed concern that FF sales have been in decline due to the numbering of the series potentially causing confusion for the consumer. DQ has a similar numbering system. Between DQ IX's scrapped action combat system, the comment at DQ XII's title card announcement about action being added to DQ's combat (and maybe this has been scrapped, we'll find out), and a desire to grow the reach of the franchise, it seems there is a desire explore new things and to alter the formula of DQ which is antithetical to what DQ has been built on (largely avoiding change). With all of these things under consideration, could Square-Enix see this as an opportunity to soft retire Dragon Quest (I could see them doing remakes indefinitely) and direct resources/ideas to a new pillar franchise for the company rather than Horii/Toriyama/Sakaguchi's "thing" now being handled by different people?
