I don't like sitting through tracks with nothing but pointless sounds reflecting the twisted vision of what Maynard wanted them to represent.

It's the drugs for sure. Notice that piano jig on the Aenema CD? Now imagine Maynard on acid and you realize why it's on the CD to begin with.

How can Tool be "Psuedo-Intellectual"? What does he have to sing about for his lyrics to be intellectual? Earth Science?

goddamit, Griese!
I love Tool's recently updated webcast.

(talking to Danny): "The art work for Lateralus was very lively and vibrant. Will the new cd follow suit?"
Danny: It depends what drugs we're on at the time.

Dream Theater by a landslide. I like Tool, but I'm a DT zealot. I can't be rational when comparing them to anyone else. ;)

Tool. I was just listening to Undertow last night and I noticed something...the 5th track ("Crawl Away" I think) has some tribal thingy going on before the track begins. It's really low, i noticed it and had to turn the volume up all the way and heard it clearly. I'm sure you guys have already known but it surprised me that so many years listening to that album there was still shit I didn't realize about it.

And how are you doing there Lisa?

alright, alright recommend me some melodious and/or edgy dream theater tracks w/o too much progressive stuff...one of the few tracks that i like is "lie".
and most TOOL listeners here seemed to have heard mostly the latter two albums, i cant see how Undertow is at all pretentious, lyrically and otherwise. its freaking raw and bursting with passion.

If you like Lie, check out "Honor Thy Father", "The Glass Prison", "This Dying Soul (which is essentially the glass prison part 2), "Caught in a Web".

That should do ya for now. Although if you're using Lie as a measurement of the type of Dream Theater music you like, Dream Theater might just not be your style of music.

Also, I think it's worth noting that Dream Theater are HUGE tool fans(not sure if the reverse is the case), and you can hear major obvious tool influences on several tracks (such as the great debate and home).

EDIT - Just realised I quoted my previous post...this was supposed to be edited in, instead of quoting myself, oops.

Yeah...I downloaded Tool's "Intolerance", similiar style to Schism. I think I outgrew this kind of music years ago. :p

If you want a Dream Theater song without "prog" stuff, you could get Another Day and Wait For Sleep. Very laid back songs, probably not your thing either, since you like TEH ANGSTY MUZAK.

Let's now discuss Tool vs DT clothes, hats etc. DT has some of the lamest shit I've ever seen. How their fans can sport them is truly beyond me.

i dont necessarily like angsty music, though i agree Undertow is very angsty. i just dont like progressive metal ala Dream Theater or Symphony X etc, i'd consider Tool progressive metal as well, and thats the type of stuff i'd listen to. i also listen to a lot of upbeat world music, dub, rai, regage, etc.
im a huge pop music fan in general, and a lot of the brit pop is more witty/clever/morbid rather than angsty.

Tool is so boring live. They barely even move, except for Maynard dancing like he's made out of polygons. They sound great though, sometimes.

My buddy went to a Tool concert and said Maynard had his back to the crowd the whole night. Drugs make you do funny things.

I love Tool live. Sure they aren't very active but the whole experience is awesome. And I don't see a similar style between "Intolerance" and "Schism" Tool grew a lot between the making of those two songs and it shows.

Yea... I'm not wearing that on a fucking shirt of mine.

Oh, and you haven't experienced a live performance unless you've seen Dream Theater. 3 Hours action packed fucking action. I saw them this last March, and I'd say 75% of the songs were atleast 10 minutes long.. and they did A Change of Seasons(23 minutes long) for the encore.

When I saw DT a couple years back in Baltimore, they were kicking aorund a soccer ball while they were playing the instrumedly.

If you have any idea what the instrumedly is, you know wouldve shat your pants at the sight. It was wicked.

Hey Mike Portnoy. Why is all of the DT gear I've seen quite lame and uninspiring? I wouldn't dress my worst enemies in your gear.

Hey Lisa, I've noticed you put down a CD mixed by you in a playlist thread... what stuff do you mix / play / etc. just out of curiosity?

Uh.. what does that have to do with Dream Theater owning Tool?

Primarily hard house but sometimes hard trance and some techno but it's always hard.

I enjoy Tool way more than dream Theater. Dream Theater has a horrible singer that manages to ruin most of their songs.

Home is a Great Song tho.

Given that I've only heard perhaps one album from each, I'd say Dream Theater has their stuff together more musically, but Tool is the one I'd buy between the two.

I put Dream Theater in the same boat as Rush.... really good musically, singer pretty much ruins it. It's like if you were having sex and then your partner started talking and sounded like your grandparent or something...

I've given DT every damn chance in the book. I listened to the CD's that ALOT of fans said were their best : "Metropolis Part 2: Scenes from a Memory", "Images & Words" and "Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence".

I just don't get it. They have their moments of some very cool music, good hard guitar riffs but then they'll throw in some God awfull synthesizer sounds that totally ruins the song. Add to that the fact that LaBrie's singing voice sounds like a cross between the lead singer of Journey and the lead singer of Cindrella and you've got a very bad vocalist. After listening to their songs, I also couldn't remember how any of them went -- where the hell are the hooks that are supposed to immediately grab you?? Basically all their songs are them showing off their playing abilities, but when it comes down to actual melody and groove they've got NOTHING.

In addition, the lyrics are pathetic and when sung by that flamer LaBrie they sound even worse.

Bottom line -- Tool is the way cooler band.

Since this thread has been brought back from the dead, I would just like to say it's pretty cool that this ended up being a pretty mature discussion. Rock.
