The government warned Monday that a few drinks a day might not protect against strokes and heart attacks after all.

Some studies in recent years have touted the health benefits of moderate drinking. Some have even said that as many as four drinks a day can significantly reduce the risk of heart disease in people 40 and older.

They found that the nondrinkers had many more risks for heart disease -- such as being overweight and inactive or having high blood pressure and diabetes -- than the moderate drinkers.

Based on those results, the agency could not say that moderate drinking actually was a factor in reducing the risk of heart disease.

Moderate drinkers tended to be in better health, better educated, wealthier and more active than their nondrinking counterparts, and that might have contributed to their lower risk of heart disease, the study said.

"It appears that moderate drinkers have many social and lifestyle characteristics that favor their survival over nondrinkers and few of these differences are likely due to alcohol consumption itself," the study said.

I'm surprised by how long this took to debunk.

In other news, a 2 millions dollars study proved that shooting yourself in the head will reduce your life expectancy

BZZ! WRONG!

It does not clearly state that it is not a factor.

Based on those results, the agency could not say that moderate drinking actually was a factor in reducing the risk of heart disease.

in other words, they are saying that there are too many other factors involved to conclusively say that drinking was definitely one of them.

and really, in this time of EVERYTHING IS BAD FOR YOU did you really expect anything else? In 15 years when everything cycles back around drinking will be good for you again with studies to prove it.. I'm going to get going hard and heavy for then.. :lol

They're saying that the non drinkiers in the study were poor diabetic overweight slobs while the drinkers were educated, wealthy, and active.... either someone fudged the test subjects or some random sampling went awry..

unless you're saying that drinking makes you educated, wealthy, and active and not drinking makes you a poor diabetic overweight slob?

too be fair they said moderate drinkers... your description is not that of a moderate drinker. :lol

Or... moderate drinking doesn't have a significant effect either way.

...but you know, and I hate to make such statements, if the government is the one alerting this.....

So long as you drink continuously enough to THINK those things about yourself, then yes, yes it does.

right, either or.. inconclusive. not DRINKING IS NOW BAD FOR YOU. It might be good for you, it might not be good, it might not be bad... we don't know..

good thing we spend money on tests like these.

I was under the impression that the original study/studies said that ONE drink a day was beneficial and any more just make things worse. This one seems to only mention drinking several a day. Any relation?

How about the lower rates of heart disease in France, where wine consumption is the highest in the world?

Surely this study doesn't mean that all French people are necessarily better educated or wealthier.

Dammit I was planning on a few beers tonight after work. Now I have to wait for the next study which tells me moderate drinking is ok again.

I think if we live in the here and now, we're safe.
