Everyone did. Didn't you know? You got in on Plus for driveclub?
To all those acting like this is some kind of shitstorm of epic proportions, have you played it?
Well shit, I feel left out for getting it before I knew Driveclub was even a thing.Everyone did. Didn't you know?
You got in on Plus for driveclub?
People saying they got + for Driveclub, sure, they have a good reason to be pissed. The rest of us who got it before Driveclub was even announced, or only said to ourselves at the time of the announcement "hey cool, another perk" need to adjust fucking expectations. It sucks it isn't out yet. Pretending like + isn't worth it now, or you've been screwed out of your money is a goddamn joke. There is a rather disturbing tendency to turn the fault towards the PS+ subscribers that want to enjoy their Driveclub game. "Oh you're getting it for free anyways, so stop demanding/stop fuming" kind of posts. "Oh you're getting it for free so you don't have any right to complain" kind of posts.
I say it is disturbing because access to Driveclub is something that Sony promised to PS+ subscribers. So people bemoaning others that demand stuff Sony itself has promised but failed to deliver is, in my eyes, a very fine description of corporate apologist.
Have you played it?
I repeat, have you played it?
To all those acting like this is some kind of shitstorm of epic proportions, have you played it?
Yes, the online has been a clusterfuck. But the game is not a MMO and has been playable since day 1. It does a lot of things well, do not expect it to be Gran Turismo or Forza, ... it has incredible environments, gorgeous graphics, great semi-arcade/sim gameplay, and has some cool things coming up like free content and dynamic weather.
I'm so tired of people 1) dismissing it entirely due to some of the less than favorable reviews. 2) shitting on it because it is a year late and has server issues.
So you will not download the PS+ version when it eventually releases, because it is weeks late?
Wow.
Yeah, I'm wondering what that was all about. Lots of other games do seem to offer plenty of similar features in-game, so it is weird if that was what the game was delayed for and has trouble keeping going. Makes me appreciate FH2 and every other online-heavy game that does it with little to no fuss, so it's gotta be something really fucking obscure that's screwing them up. But why, if it's not necessarily an overload of an overwhelming number of requests hitting the servers, and is, instead, something in their code, as Paul Rustchynsky was saying on Twitter or whatever, wasn't this an issue in early access for reviewers or manifested in their betas? Hopefully, they can be more informative and get this on-track within the month. The embarrassment is amplified because of how simple their social integration/online is. It's basically just leaderboards, something that a lot of games have nowadays without a second thought.

...no, no it's not "basically just leaderboards".
Critique away, but keep the arguments honest, please.
I'm sitting here quite unhappy that it still isn't available. I find the notion of going the extra mile and saying my + subscription was a rip off, absurd, though. When you don't get what was advertised you don't need to adjust your expectations, they have already been ruined.

You posted this while I was writing it up. So here you go.Please enlighten me on the deep and taxing social/network features of Driveclub that aren't either Leaderboards or beating friend's times for drifting/speed/cornering on a section of a track.

You got in on Plus for driveclub?
Is there another racer that updates these constantly every time you beat one when you are out on the track?
Between not ever and neverAny mention of an ETA for this yet?
Guess I can't speak to that position. I didn't pay for the game because I started + before it was even known as a thing. It was advertised as a feature before I subscribed. I would have subscribed even if it hadn't been, but that is irrelevant. By advertising it and then accepting my money, I paid for it.

Why buy it before Drive Club released then? You could've bought it once the game had released and you would've had your entire membership period to play it which would've saved you money too. Strange.I did too.

If the dev fucked up this badly, what is Sony supposed to do about it? All they can do is wait it out, no?Regardless if people are being "babies" about it, this looks really bad on Sony. They deserve to get shit for it.
Incompetence, false promise, whatever you want to call it -- Sony had been doing really well with PR lately and its a shame this is going down.
I've had + well before The PS4 came out. I had no clue about this game until sometime after I purchased my PS4 around launch. I'm not claiming everyone is in my situation, but I certainly wouldn't assume everyone knew about the game when they got a sub with their new PS4, either. Yes it sucks. Everyone agrees on that. That is actually pretty unlikely, seeing as PS+ subscriptions have gone up significantly since the launch of the PS4 and the PS+ edition of DriveClub was announced long before the system launched and even before the game was delayed a year.
Either way, it was advertised as being part of the PS+ service and is being delayed with little information regarding when it will eventually be available. It is a shitty situation for consumers regardless of when you subbed to PS+.
I'm not sure what they should do now. I just know that DC being "free" for PS+ members was a big moment in their e3 presentation and these technical hiccups along with the delay cast a shitty light on PS+'s posterboy. If the dev fucked up this badly, what is Sony supposed to do about it? Horizon 2 does it.
It's a good system on both games.
It's never been mentioned in any reviews or comparisons that they are similar?
Not when you're on the track. The only thing I've seen in Horizon (and this is not a complaint) is rivals where you race against another player's ghost in a time trial. When you beat that rival you can exit out, collect your winnings and start it up again against your next rival.Horizon 2 does it.

Ahh, OK, speed traps and speed zones, sure, out in the open world. The only issue there is that the leaderboard there seems to be completely flat. Its not broken up by car or class or difficulty - just a straight up maximum speed past a camera. Same with the speed zones. The super fast cars will nail all of those challenges - there is no fine grained competition unless I misunderstand how those work. It's definitely more pronounced in Driveclub in presentation but Horizon 2 will actively show you beating others as you do things such as run speed traps, speed zones, skill chains and more.

DriveClub not only puts a rival's ghost on the track, but the rival after that one as well as your own best time - to properly mock you. Then you'll run into segments of the track broken up into drift zones (hair-pins and sweepers), speed zones (straights or through a chicane) and cornering zones (where the driving line shows up), and each one of these pits your drive across that section of the track against your nearest rival's score. Beat one of those zones and on the very next lap you'll be facing the next rival, without ever leaving the current event.
I don't know of any other game that does this stuff on the track. Its a natural extension of Geometry Wars' pervasive leaderboards, Shadow Complex's friends challenges and AutoLog though - where rival times and scores are always embedded directly into whatever you're doing and keep those competitive fires fully stoked.

I can't say which one is dealing with more data overall, especially since I don't know how Horizon uses the Drivatar tech, but DriveClub seems to be doing a lot (or attempting to do a lot) in real-time.
I was just saying that the system is there to an effect not they it is as pronounced or complicated as Driveclub.
I wouldn't say it's that simple. Every track (55) has a leaderboard for every car (50) and every mode (2, TT and drift):
55 x 50 x 2 = 5500 leaderboards
Ghosts for every car and every track in TT:
55 x 50 = 2750 ghosts
The challenges (say, 7 or 8 per track on average?) for every car and every track:
50 x 55 x 7 = 19250
Don't forget that all those are dynamic, too... you beat a ghost during a time trial, another will download automatically download while you're still driving. Same for the challenges. So before taking into account club points as well, their databases/servers would need the capacity to store around 27500 individual entries per player. Dumbing down what their servers do as "basically just leaderboards" is greatly underselling just how many metrics of skill Driveclub measures and compares. And that doesn't take into account the additional load needed for co-ordinating clubs, of which there are already thousands.

It still should give pause, I think. It's one thing for a few days of being late, but a few weeks with minimal word AND the game is screwed up... and it's a racing game rather than a huge online experience... well, what gives?I understand people wanting it, but a couple weeks delay is water off a duck to me. Certainly not worth making a fuss about.

It would help if there was more communication on Sony and Evolution's end. I respect that they are trying to keep the consumer that purchased the game happy first but at the same time you have been advertising for a year that Driveclub would be available on PS+ on release day.
Find me one game that does it to the extent DC does. This is all standard stuff for a racing game nowadays... Really nothing special.
Size isn't the issue at all... if it was I'd be mentioning how big the records are (even hypothetically). It's the sheer number of records. Conservative estimate, say there are 100,000 people online at any one time. That's 100,000 people reading and writing tens or hundreds of times a minute to different areas of whatever database they have on there. Regardless of the size of the data they're reading, it's how many people can read and write this data simultaneously that's the issue (and why they had the "one in, one out" restriction). All of this sound like data that can be contained in files of a few kilobytes. We're talking about replay data (i.e. button inputs) and leaderboard entries (wow player name + time + country + vehicle is going to require 1GB storage at least!!), it's not even screenshots or videos. You're really trying to stretch it.
Considering how everything DC does is bog standard I'd love to know all of these other games that are doing what DC is. Because I sure as hell haven't played em.Find me one game that does it to the extent DC does.
Not even a hint of an ETA is what bugs me. I know they're going day by day, which makes sense, especially when you're still trying to find the problem, but once you're talking about hitting a milestone where the 'majority of players can connect online' (which seems dubious as is), that's the moment when you bring up some kind of light at the end of the tunnel. Is this game going to be fully up and running in days, or weeks? Are we going to still have issues in mid November? What are reasonable expectations? What little has been said provides no guidance other than "we're working on it", which while certainly true, imparts no real information and sets no reasonable expectations. The communication is what hurts the most. I can wait, just keep me updated or tell me when its coming or when you're targeting to TRY and release it.
